Cardano vs. Solana for AI Agent Transactions: A Developer’s Guide

Cardano agents construct explicit UTXO spends; Solana transactions compose instructions against accounts and programs. Compare signing, fees and payment integrations without assuming a universal winner.

Neither Cardano nor Solana is a universal winner for AI-agent transactions. Cardano’s UTXO model makes an agent assemble explicit inputs and outputs before signing; Solana transactions compose instructions that operate on accounts through programs. The better fit depends on the agent’s workflow, authorization design, fee requirements and payment integrations—not on a workload-level speed or cost ranking, which the available sources do not establish.

How do Cardano and Solana transactions differ?

The key architectural difference is what an agent must describe when it constructs a transaction. That choice shapes how the application prepares an action and what a reviewer can inspect before authorizing it.

Question Cardano Solana
What does a transaction work with? Existing UTXOs that it spends to create new UTXOs; its inputs and outputs are explicit. Cardano transaction overview Accounts and programs, with one or more instructions composed into an atomic transaction. Solana Core Concepts
How do smart contracts participate? Validator scripts approve or reject spending from script-locked UTXOs. The transaction includes the script data needed for validation. Cardano smart-contract explainer Programs execute the instructions in a transaction against accounts. Solana Core Concepts
How are transaction fees described? The transaction is built with a fee and script execution budget; script costs are priced using protocol parameters before submission. Cardano transaction-cost documentation The core documentation states a base fee of 5,000 lamports per signature, with an optional priority fee based on requested compute units. Solana Core Concepts
What agent-payment infrastructure is specifically described? Cardano’s agent materials describe x402 for per-request payments over HTTP and Masumi for agent identity, escrowed payments and discovery. Cardano AI-agent guide The Solana source cited here covers core transaction concepts, not a comparable AI-agent payment or escrow integration.

What does each transaction model mean for an agent?

Cardano: construct the spend explicitly

An agent or its application selects UTXOs to spend and constructs the outputs and any script-related data required by the action. For a contract interaction, the script checks whether the transaction satisfies its spending conditions. This design makes the proposed movement of funds explicit in the transaction, but the application still has to build a valid transaction from the current chain state. If an input UTXO is spent before the transaction is included, the transaction can become invalid.

Solana: compose instructions around accounts and programs

A Solana transaction can combine multiple instructions into one atomic execution unit. This can suit a workflow where a single transaction needs to invoke multiple program actions, provided those instructions and their account requirements are correctly constructed. The documentation describes the model; it does not establish that every agent workflow is simpler, faster or cheaper on Solana.

How should an AI agent be allowed to sign?

Building a transaction and authorizing it are separate decisions. An agent may prepare a proposal without having access to a key that can move funds. That distinction matters when a model can receive untrusted prompts or call tools: an attacker who influences the agent should not automatically gain the ability to approve a transfer.

Cardano’s AI-agent guide describes a proposal-and-sign pattern for an agent using an MCP server: the server can provide chain information and draft a transaction, then return an unsigned transaction for review and signature in the user’s wallet through the CIP-30 boundary. The guide warns against exposing signing keys to the model or server; a server that can move funds without approval should be treated as a custodial service. Read the Cardano AI-agent guide.

For either chain, decide who controls the keys, which actions require human approval, and how much authority any automated component receives. A practical policy can limit permitted destinations, transaction types or spending amounts, and require a human to review actions outside those limits. Treat these as application-level controls, not as guarantees provided by either transaction format. The sources cited here do not establish that Solana has the same MCP implementation or signing workflow described in the Cardano guide.

Which fee model is more predictable for an agent?

Cardano’s documentation describes calculating the fee and script execution budget as part of building the transaction, with script costs determined using protocol parameters before submission. Its smart-contract explainer also describes evaluating a transaction before requesting a signature. This gives an application a basis for showing an estimated on-chain cost before the user approves, but it does not guarantee inclusion or prevent a transaction from becoming invalid if its inputs change. Solana’s documented base fee is 5,000 lamports per signature, and its documentation describes an optional priority fee tied to requested compute units. That formula is not a fiat-cost quote or a promise about the cost of a particular agent action. Priority fees and network conditions can change, so check the live Solana documentation when estimating costs.

These descriptions do not show that one network is cheaper for an agent. A meaningful comparison would need to specify the same action—such as a token transfer, swap or contract call—along with fee treatment, network conditions and what counts as successful confirmation. No matched Cardano-versus-Solana agent workload comparison is established by the sources cited here.

What agent-payment options are documented for Cardano?

Cardano’s developer guide describes x402 as a way to set a per-request price over plain HTTP without an account or API key. It also describes Masumi as an agent-economy layer for identity, escrowed payments and discovery. Cardano’s AI page describes a Masumi contract that locks funds, releases them when work is delivered and refunds them when it is not. Why AI Needs Cardano.

These are descriptions of particular Cardano-related tools and integrations, not evidence that every x402 deployment works the same way or that equivalent native agent-payment integrations are available on Solana. Check the current implementation, supported wallets and dispute or failure handling before designing a production payment flow.

How should a developer choose between them?

  • Start with the action. Map the intended transaction—transfer, contract interaction, payment for a service or multi-step workflow—to the chain’s transaction model and the programs or scripts it requires.
  • Design authorization separately. Decide whether the agent only drafts transactions or can sign and submit them, which approvals are mandatory, and what limits apply to automated actions.
  • Estimate the complete cost. Include the relevant execution or priority-fee behavior and check conditions at the time of use; do not compare a protocol fee figure with an assumed fiat total.
  • Test failure paths. Determine what the application does when a transaction is invalid, an input is no longer available, a payment condition is unmet or a user declines a signature.
  • Validate the actual workload. Measure the same action on each candidate network under documented conditions, including confirmation success and the fees paid. Do not infer throughput, latency or total cost from transaction architecture alone.

Cardano may be a better fit when explicit UTXO construction or the documented x402 and Masumi agent-payment context aligns with the application. Solana may fit when the application benefits from composing instructions against accounts and programs. Those are conditional architecture choices; the evidence here does not rank either chain’s performance or total transaction cost for AI agents.
