The company said it was building an online, automated 401(k) service to help small businesses offer retirement plans.
What Captain401 announced in February 2018
Human Interest’s February 7, 2018 announcement joined two developments: the company’s change of name from Captain401 and an $11 million Series A financing round. Wing Venture Capital said it led the round.
The company described its service as an online, automated 401(k) with built-in investment advising for employees. It said the service was intended both for employers setting up a first retirement plan and for businesses switching providers. These details describe the company’s 2018 positioning, not necessarily its current product.
Why the company targeted small businesses
Human Interest said cost and administrative work could keep small businesses from offering workplace retirement plans. It positioned its service as designed for smaller budgets and intended to take HR and compliance tasks off employers’ hands. Those are the company’s stated reasons for its approach, rather than an independent assessment of its costs or results.

The 2018 release also cited figures suggesting that 14% of U.S. small businesses could offer 401(k) plans and that small-business employees made up 48% of the American workforce, or about 56 million people. The release did not identify an original statistical source for those figures, so they should be understood as historical company-reported context, not independently verified estimates.
Why Captain401 became Human Interest
Then-CEO Roger Lee said the new name better reflected a people-first approach and left room for the company to expand into other financial tools. The announcement also said the company was helping more than 10,000 employees save for retirement at that time. That employee count is a 2018 figure, not a current total.

How the company describes its service today
Human Interest’s current company website describes a broader full-service 401(k) and 403(b) business. Its small-business materials describe payroll integrations that can automate enrollment and contribution processing, as well as a partner network that includes advisers, payroll providers, accountants, and brokers. These are current company descriptions; they do not establish which features were available in 2018 or independently measure service quality.
For employers considering a plan, the company’s current materials are a starting point rather than a substitute for checking plan-specific terms. Relevant questions include pricing and fee transparency, payroll compatibility, the scope of administration and compliance support, investment choices and advisory arrangements, and how employee and employer support is handled.

What employers should know about offering a 401(k)
Human Interest’s current small-business page says there is no federal law requiring employers to offer a retirement plan, while some states have adopted requirements for employers that do not offer another plan. State rules and tax-credit eligibility can change and depend on the employer’s circumstances, so verify them with current official sources or a qualified professional before making a decision. The company also says eligible employers may qualify for a startup tax credit; eligibility should be checked against current IRS guidance.
