Those figures describe two private funding rounds, not the company’s current valuation or a public-market price.
What happened in the March 2022 funding round?
Captain Fresh raised $50 million in a Series C co-led by existing investors Prosus Ventures and Tiger Global, with Accel and other existing investors also participating, according to TechCrunch’s March 2022 report. The report put the company’s post-round valuation at $500 million.

The comparison represents a 2.5-fold valuation, or a 150% increase, between the reported round figures. These were contemporaneous media reports of private-round valuations, not audited public disclosures or prices at which ordinary investors could buy shares.
Why did the valuation rise so quickly?
The company’s pitch was built around making seafood procurement more dependable for business buyers. In 2022, Captain Fresh was described as a B2B marketplace connecting fragmented supply from fishermen and farmers with businesses that needed seafood. Founder and CEO Utham Gowda characterized the sector as “a very large sector but also very messy,” and said, “We believe that the core problem is in organizing the supply.”

Gowda described the service as confirming a buyer’s order and delivering the product the next morning, so customers could focus on sales and marketing rather than procurement. He also said the company sought to limit the number of handoffs between catch and sale to help preserve quality and shelf life. These are the founder’s descriptions of the operating model, not independently verified performance findings.
Captain Fresh also reported a sharp increase in annualized revenue run rate between December 2021 and March 2022. Gowda told The Economic Times that the run rate had doubled from December and that business quality had improved since the prior quarter. A run rate extrapolates revenue from a recent period—in this case, the company’s best-performing month, as described in the report. It is not the same as audited revenue earned over a full year, and should be treated as a management-reported indicator.

Prosus Ventures’ India investment lead Ashutosh Sharma said at the time: “On the supply side, from a seafood marketplace, Captain Fresh is now entering into the larger animal protein industry.” That statement points to an expansion ambition, but does not by itself establish how much of the company’s later growth came from seafood or other protein categories.
What does Captain Fresh report about its later business?
The company’s present-day description is broader than the seafood marketplace framing used in 2022. Its About page and Investor Relations page describe a multi-brand seafood operation involving suppliers, processing facilities, distributors and retailers across international markets. That later footprint should not be read backward as a description of the company at the time of the Series C.

Captain Fresh’s official About page labels the following operating results as company materials. They are financial performance figures, not valuations:

Is Captain Fresh worth $500 million today?
The $500 million figure is a reported valuation following the March 2022 Series C. The sources cited here do not state a current valuation. Later operating disclosures cannot be substituted for one, and a private-company funding valuation is not automatically an up-to-date measure of what the business could sell for today.
In August 2025, Moneycontrol reported that Captain Fresh had confidentially filed draft IPO papers with SEBI and proposed a fresh issue of ₹1,700 crore. This was reporting about a confidential filing and proposed offering, not confirmation that an IPO was completed or the company became publicly listed. A confidential filing also does not establish a public share price or current valuation.
