What did Canoo tell employees?
TechCrunch reported that the email said employees would be locked out of company systems at the end of Friday, December 20, and that benefits would continue through December. Those are terms reported from the email, not independently verified outcomes for every employee. The phrase “mandatory unpaid break” should be understood as the wording attributed to Canoo in that report, not as a formal legal classification.
The report did not establish individual workers’ final pay, benefits, employment end dates, or later claims. It also did not clarify the number of employees left after Canoo’s earlier furloughs.
Why did the report say “remaining” employees?
Two days earlier, on December 18, Canoo announced that it had furloughed 82 employees and idled its Oklahoma facility. The December 20 report concerned the people still employed after those cuts, rather than confirming that every person on Canoo’s workforce before the furlough was included.

TechCrunch also reported that Canoo had disclosed $700,000 in cash in November 2024. That figure is contextual financial reporting by TechCrunch, not a figure independently confirmed here through a primary filing. The available reporting establishes financial distress, but does not establish a definitive internal reason for the timing or precise terms of the unpaid break.
What happened to Canoo after the unpaid-break report?
The break did not lead to a reported return-to-work period. On January 17, 2025, Canoo and certain subsidiaries filed for Chapter 7 liquidation. In its filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Canoo said a trustee would assume control of the debtors and their assets for liquidation. Canoo separately announced that it would cease operations effective immediately.
