Canceled Subscriptions Still Charging You? Here’s What to Do

If a subscription bills you after cancellation, document the request, ask the company to stop billing, and promptly use your issuer’s dispute process. Credit- and debit-card rules differ.

If a subscription is charging you after you canceled, save proof of the cancellation, contact the company that runs the service, and promptly contact your card issuer or bank if the charge continues or the company does not fix it. The right dispute process depends on whether you paid by credit card, debit card, or another method; a refund is not automatic.

First, check what the charge is and whether cancellation took effect

Compare the statement descriptor, amount, date, and payment method with the subscription you intended to cancel. Confirm the cancellation’s effective date and whether you received a confirmation. A charge after a cancellation attempt can mean the request did not complete, a different service or account is still active, a renewal occurred before cancellation took effect, or the company continued billing afterward. The facts matter.

If you do not recognize the statement name, contact your card issuer or bank using its official app, website, or the number on your card. Do not use a phone number or link in an unexpected renewal text or email: the FTC warns that fake renewal notices may be attempts to obtain financial information. Instead, look up the provider independently or use an account you already know is official. FTC guidance on free trials and auto-renewals explains how negative-option subscriptions can automatically bill you unless you act to stop them.

What to do about a charge after cancellation

  1. Gather your records. Save the cancellation confirmation, emails, chat transcripts, screenshots, and any enrollment terms you still have. Keep statements showing later charges. If you spoke by phone, write down the date, number called, and what was said. The FTC recommends retaining cancellation communications and notes about calls. FTC: Getting In and Out of Free Trials, Auto-Renewals, and Negative Option Subscriptions.
  2. Contact the subscription company. Use its stated cancellation or support process, preferably in writing. Give the cancellation date and confirmation details, say which later charge you are questioning, ask it to stop future billing, and request a correction or refund for charges after cancellation took effect. Keep a copy of your message and any response.
  3. Contact your payment issuer promptly. If the company does not resolve the issue—or if billing continues—use the issuer’s official app or website, or call the number printed on your card. Explain that the charge occurred after cancellation and ask how to dispute it and prevent future payments. The FTC says consumers can use the card company’s online dispute process or call, and advises following up with a letter to the billing-disputes address. Do not wait for a slow merchant response before asking the issuer about its process. FTC billing-error guidance.
  4. Keep checking statements. Watch for additional charges and save each one. If the payment issuer asks for documents or information, respond through its official channel and keep copies of what you submit.
  5. Report cancellation trouble when useful. You can report unauthorized enrollment or difficulty canceling at ReportFraud.ftc.gov or to your state attorney general. A government report can help flag a problem, but it does not replace contacting the issuer to dispute a payment. See the FTC’s guidance on stopping subscriptions you never ordered.

Credit card versus debit card: the dispute process differs

Payment method What the FTC says What to do
Credit card For the Fair Credit Billing Act process for qualifying billing errors, written notice generally must reach the issuer within 60 days after the first statement containing the error was sent. The FTC describes issuer acknowledgment within 30 days and resolution within two billing cycles, no more than 90 days, after receiving the letter. These are general descriptions and do not mean every recurring-payment dispute qualifies. Contact the issuer promptly. Send written notice to its billing-disputes address—not the payment address—and include the charge amount and date, account details, and a concise explanation. Keep a copy and proof of sending. Use the issuer’s instructions and the FTC’s sample dispute letter.
Debit card Debit-card protections and procedures differ; you may not have the same refund rights as with a credit-card billing error. Some issuers voluntarily offer additional protections. Contact the bank or debit-card issuer as soon as you discover the charge. Ask about its dispute process, deadlines, and what evidence it needs. Do not assume the credit-card 60-day written-notice guidance applies to debit-card disputes. See the FTC’s billing guidance.

The 60-day period is tied to the first statement containing a qualifying credit-card billing error, not necessarily the day you noticed a later charge. Because the applicable rules depend on the payment type and circumstances, contact the issuer promptly rather than waiting to determine whether a deadline is near.

Merchant request, issuer dispute, or both?

Contacting the merchant gives it a chance to stop the subscription and correct or voluntarily refund a charge. The issuer handles the payment dispute. These steps serve different purposes: do both when appropriate, and do not let a merchant’s response time cause you to miss the issuer’s procedure or deadline.

The FTC’s consumer guidance puts it plainly: “If you can’t cancel, call your credit card company, and ask them to stop the payments.” That is credit-card guidance; if you used a debit card, contact the bank or debit issuer promptly and ask about its specific process. FTC source.

What to expect from a refund request or dispute

A complaint, merchant request, or dispute does not guarantee a refund. The outcome depends on the evidence, payment method, issuer’s process, applicable law, and the particular facts—including whether cancellation was completed and when it took effect. The FTC’s consumer guidance is general information, not a decision about an individual account. State law and issuer terms may also affect available remedies.

FTC materials describe negative-option subscriptions as arrangements that bill automatically unless a consumer takes action to stop them. A free trial may become paid after a stated deadline, and a service may renew automatically. Check the terms and cancellation method shown when you signed up, and verify that no other account or related service remains active. These possibilities are worth checking, but they do not establish that a charge after a completed cancellation is valid. FTC subscription guidance.
