Canada’s federal Electric Vehicle Affordability Program (EVAP) offers up to $5,000 in 2026 for eligible battery-electric and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles, and up to $2,500 for eligible plug-in hybrids. The amount is applied by a participating seller at the point of sale—but the vehicle, transaction, lease term and timing must all qualify. The scheduled incentive is set by the date the seller submits the eligibility assessment, not simply by the date you take delivery. Transport Canada’s program overview has the current rules.

How much is the federal EV rebate?

EVAP’s published maximums decline over time. The amounts below are program maximums; an individual purchase or lease may receive less depending on eligibility and lease duration.

Assessment submission year Battery-electric and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles Plug-in hybrids
2026 Up to $5,000 Up to $2,500
2027 Up to $4,000 Up to $2,000
2028 and 2029 Up to $3,000 Up to $1,500
2030 and 2031 Up to $2,000 Up to $1,000

The schedule is based on when the dealership or authorized seller submits the eligibility assessment through the program portal. Ask the seller to confirm the expected submission date and amount before signing. See Transport Canada’s overview and incentive schedule.

Who and what can qualify?

EVAP is for eligible new light-duty vehicles purchased or leased by eligible Canadians, organizations or businesses. A vehicle must be new and registered for the first time, weigh under 8,500 pounds, be road-capable, have at least four functioning wheels and meet Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. It must also be made in Canada or in a country with a free-trade agreement with Canada.

Check the transaction price, not just the advertised MSRP

For vehicles made in a country with a Canadian free-trade agreement, the final transaction value must be $50,000 or less. Canadian-made vehicles have no transaction-value cap. This is not a universal MSRP ceiling: the deal’s final transaction value matters, and being on the government’s vehicle list does not guarantee that every trim or transaction qualifies. Check the EVAP vehicle list and have the seller verify the specific vehicle and deal.

Individuals have a one-incentive limit

An individual may receive one EVAP incentive during the program’s five-year period. Confirm that you have not already used the individual allowance before counting the federal incentive toward your budget.

Does the rebate apply to leases?

Yes. A lease must be at least 12 months long. Leases shorter than 48 months receive a prorated incentive; leases of 48 months or longer receive the full applicable amount. The maximum scheduled amount is therefore not automatic for every lease. Ask the dealer to show the incentive calculation and lease term in the paperwork. Transport Canada sets out the lease rules in its EVAP overview.

Does an order made before February 16, 2026 qualify?

No, if the transaction was initiated before February 16, 2026. A later delivery date does not make an earlier transaction eligible. EVAP is scheduled to run through March 31, 2031, or until funding is exhausted, whichever comes first; funding is first-come, first-served. The date and funding conditions are described in Transport Canada’s overview.

EVIQO Level 2 EV Charger J1772 40A NEMA 14-50 - 240V Wall Charging Station
  • WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. • PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. How much funding remains?

Transport Canada reports $2.275 billion in total EVAP funding and $1.92 billion remaining as of October 1, 2026. That is a dated balance, not a guarantee that money will remain available until the scheduled end date. Check the live program status page before relying on the rebate.

How do you receive the money?

You do not apply directly to Transport Canada. The dealership or authorized seller checks the vehicle and transaction, obtains your consent for the eligibility check, and has you sign an attestation if approved. The seller applies the incentive to the bill of sale or lease after taxes and fees. Only enrolled sellers can submit claims for reimbursement, and dealer participation is voluntary.

Before you sign

  • Ask the seller to verify that the exact vehicle, trim and transaction qualify.
  • Confirm the final transaction value and the vehicle’s country of manufacture.
  • Ask when the eligibility assessment will be submitted and which schedule amount will apply.
  • For a lease, verify the incentive reflects the lease duration.
  • Check that the rebate is shown on the sale or lease paperwork after taxes and fees.

If a participating seller omitted the incentive from an eligible transaction, Transport Canada’s EVAP questions and answers advises contacting the seller.

Can you combine EVAP with a provincial or territorial incentive?

Potentially. The federal government currently points consumers to EV-related incentives in Manitoba, Québec and Yukon; regional support may cover vehicle purchases, home charger installation or related costs and may be combined with the federal incentive. Local programs have their own eligibility rules and can change, so confirm current terms directly before including regional support in your budget.

EVAP itself is a vehicle incentive; a home-charger rebate, where available, is a separate regional benefit.

How should you compare an EV deal?

Build your comparison around the actual transaction rather than the advertised rebate maximum. Verify the eligible vehicle and final transaction value, identify the applicable federal amount from the seller’s assessment timing, account for lease proration if relevant, and separately confirm any local incentive. Then compare the resulting out-of-pocket price and contract terms across the vehicles you are considering.
