Canada’s former federal EV rebate, the Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles Program (iZEV), ran out of funding and closed on March 31, 2025. A successor, the Electric Vehicle Affordability Program (EVAP), now offers incentives for eligible transactions dated on or after February 16, 2026. Transport Canada reported $1.92 billion remaining in EVAP on October 1, 2026; that balance can change as claims are approved.
Did the Canada EV rebate run out of money?
Yes—the old iZEV program’s funds were fully committed. Transport Canada says it paused in January 2025 and officially closed on March 31, 2025. That does not mean all federal EV incentives ended: EVAP is a separate successor program with its own eligibility rules, amounts and funding.
What iZEV offered before it closed
Launched in May 2019, iZEV provided an incentive at the point of sale for eligible new-vehicle purchases and leases, subject to funding availability. Battery-electric, hydrogen fuel-cell and longer-range plug-in hybrid vehicles could qualify for up to $5,000; shorter-range plug-in hybrids could qualify for up to $2,500. Transport Canada’s January 10, 2025 announcement said more than 546,000 vehicles had been incented since the program began. Those are historical figures, not current EVAP totals. Is the federal EV rebate still available?
Yes, under EVAP, for qualifying purchase or lease transactions dated February 16, 2026 or later. Transport Canada’s program page, modified October 2, 2026, says the program received $2.275 billion over five years and had $1.92 billion remaining as of October 1, 2026. The balance is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee that funding will last until the scheduled program end. EVAP is scheduled to run through March 31, 2031, or earlier if its funding is exhausted. Funding is distributed first-come, first-served. Transport Canada: Electric Vehicle Affordability Program

How much is the EVAP rebate?
For 2026, the maximum is $5,000 for an eligible battery-electric or hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle and $2,500 for an eligible plug-in hybrid. Amounts are scheduled to decline by year. The applicable level is determined by when the dealership or authorized seller submits the eligibility assessment through the program portal—not simply by the date you signed the purchase or lease agreement.
| Vehicle type | 2026 maximum | 2027 | 2028–2029 | 2030–2031 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Battery-electric or hydrogen fuel-cell | Up to $5,000 | Up to $4,000 | Up to $3,000 | Up to $2,000 |
| Plug-in hybrid | Up to $2,500 | Up to $2,000 | Up to $1,500 | Up to $1,000 |
These are maximum program amounts, not a guarantee of the amount for a particular vehicle or transaction. Eligibility and lease term can affect the incentive. Check the current official eligible-vehicle list and have the seller assess the specific transaction.

Who and what can qualify?
EVAP’s general criteria require a new, light-duty vehicle weighing under 8,500 pounds, with at least four functioning wheels, designed for highway use on public roads and compliant with Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. The vehicle must be made in Canada or in a country with which Canada has a free-trade agreement.
- The final transaction value generally must be $50,000 or less. This price cap does not apply to Canadian-made EVs.
- A demonstrator may qualify if it has fewer than 10,000 km.
- Leases must be at least 12 months. A lease of 48 months or longer can receive the full eligible incentive; shorter eligible leases are prorated by term.
- The exact vehicle and transaction matter. A model appearing on a list does not by itself guarantee that a particular deal qualifies.

How do you receive the rebate?
The incentive is handled by a participating dealership or authorized seller at the point of sale. Consumers cannot submit the EVAP application themselves, and dealer participation is voluntary.
- Ask the dealership or authorized seller whether it participates in EVAP and whether the vehicle and transaction may qualify.
- Provide consent for the seller to check eligibility through the program portal.
- If approved, review and sign the required attestation.
- The seller applies the approved incentive to the bill of sale or lease after taxes and fees. Confirm the resulting figures on your paperwork.
Because funding is first-come, first-served and the applicable amount depends on the assessment submission date, check current program status and confirm when the seller will submit the assessment before relying on a particular amount. Transport Canada: EVAP process and FAQ

Can you combine EVAP with other support?
Provincial and territorial incentives
Some provinces and territories have separate EV-related programs. Transport Canada’s current overview identifies Manitoba, Quebec and Yukon and notes that local support may include new or used vehicle purchases, home charger installation or shipping costs for used EVs. Availability and terms vary and can change; check the relevant provincial or territorial government’s current rules rather than assuming a program is open or stackable with EVAP. Business tax treatment
Canadian businesses and organizations may also be eligible for an enhanced first-year capital cost allowance for qualifying EVs. The Spring Economic Update 2026 describes a proposed rule barring a business from claiming both an EVAP rebate and immediate expensing for the same vehicle, with the proposal effective February 16, 2026. Businesses should confirm the current tax rules and their treatment with a qualified tax professional. Department of Finance Canada: Spring Economic Update 2026
