Canada’s federal electric-vehicle incentive has already returned: the Electric Vehicle Affordability Program (EVAP) began on March 31, 2026. Eligible new-vehicle purchases and leases dated February 16, 2026 or later may qualify for up to $5,000 for a battery-electric or hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, or up to $2,500 for a plug-in hybrid. The amount depends on the vehicle and transaction, and funding is limited.
Is the Canada EV rebate back?
Yes. EVAP is the current federal incentive for eligible new electric-vehicle purchases and leases. It is a new program, distinct from the former Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) program. Although EVAP’s portal opened March 31, 2026, an eligible transaction dated February 16, 2026 or later may qualify. The program is scheduled to end March 31, 2031, or sooner if its funding runs out. See Transport Canada’s program questions and answers for the timing and program comparison.
The incentive is applied at the point of sale through an authorized seller. It is open to individuals, organizations, and businesses, subject to the program rules. Funding is first come, first served, so eligibility does not guarantee funds will remain when a transaction is processed.
How much is the federal EV incentive in 2026?
For eligible transactions in 2026, the maximum is $5,000 for a battery-electric vehicle or hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle and $2,500 for a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). EVAP’s incentive amounts are scheduled to decline over the program’s five-year life; do not assume the 2026 maximum will apply in later years. The current Transport Canada overview explains the amounts and lease rules.

Which vehicles meet the price and manufacturing rules?
For a vehicle made outside Canada, two important conditions are a final transaction value of $50,000 or less and manufacture in a country that has a free-trade agreement with Canada. Canadian-made EVs are exempt from the $50,000 price cap. Meeting these conditions alone does not establish eligibility: the vehicle must also meet the program’s other requirements.

“Final transaction value” is the relevant program test, not simply a vehicle’s advertised starting price. A higher trim, options, or transaction details may affect whether a vehicle falls within the cap. Ask the authorized seller to assess the specific vehicle and deal before relying on an advertised rebate.
Transport Canada’s vehicle list is useful for screening, but it is not an exhaustive ruling: an unlisted vehicle may still qualify if it satisfies the program criteria and applicable final transaction value. Confirm the exact model, trim, and transaction with an authorized seller.

How do leases affect the rebate?
An eligible lease must run for at least 12 months. Leases of 48 months or longer receive the full applicable incentive; eligible leases shorter than 48 months receive a prorated amount. The amount is based on when the dealer or authorized seller submits the eligibility assessment, so confirm the incentive for your lease at that time rather than relying on an earlier estimate.
How to check eligibility before you sign
- Check the current vehicle list. Look up the model and trim on Transport Canada’s vehicle-list page, while remembering that absence from the list does not by itself rule out eligibility.
- Confirm the transaction value and origin. For a vehicle made outside Canada, ask the seller to verify that its final transaction value is no more than $50,000 and that it was made in a country with a free-trade agreement with Canada. Canadian-made EVs do not have the price cap.
- Check the powertrain category. The 2026 maximum differs for battery-electric and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles versus PHEVs.
- For a lease, verify the term. It must be at least 12 months; a term below 48 months means the incentive is prorated.
- Ask the authorized seller to assess the exact deal. Confirm the amount being applied when the seller submits the eligibility assessment, and whether funds are still available.
Can you combine EVAP with a provincial incentive?
Potentially. The federal incentives page says provincial or territorial programs may be combined with federal incentives, but local eligibility and amounts depend on the jurisdiction and can change. As of the page’s current listing, Manitoba, Quebec, and Yukon offer EV-related incentives. Check the relevant federal incentives page and the applicable provincial or territorial government’s rules before budgeting for a combined rebate.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
Local programs can cover different things, including new or used EV purchases, residential charger installation, or shipping for used EV purchases. EVAP itself is a vehicle purchase or lease incentive; it does not, on the evidence stated by the federal program page, cover a Level 2 home charger.
How EVAP compares with the former iZEV program
EVAP and iZEV are separate federal programs. Transport Canada describes iZEV as having provided $2.9 billion over six years and supported more than 560,000 new EVs. EVAP is backed by $2.275 billion over five years and has a stated target of supporting more than 840,000 new electric vehicles. These are program totals and targets, not a promise that any individual buyer will receive an incentive.

It presented federal incentives alongside regulations and provincial or territorial measures as contributing to adoption; the figures do not show that rebates alone caused the increase. The same announcement described the new program as a $2.3-billion initiative, while Transport Canada’s program page gives the more precise total of $2.275 billion.
