You can use biodiesel only up to the blend your exact vehicle, engine, market specification and warranty allow. The U.S. Department of Energy says B5 is approved for diesel engines designed for petroleum diesel, and many current engines can use B20 or lower without modifications—but it also directs owners to check their vehicle and engine warranty before using higher blends. A general statement about diesel vehicles is not approval for your own car or truck.

Check your vehicle before choosing a biodiesel blend

Start with the owner’s manual and warranty information for your vehicle’s exact year, make, model, engine and country or market specification. Find the stated maximum biodiesel blend, then compare it with the pump label. If the blend is above the vehicle’s stated limit—or the manual does not say what blends are allowed—do not assume it is compatible. Ask the manufacturer or dealer for guidance before filling up.

This matters both for operating the vehicle and for understanding warranty conditions. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) says all original equipment manufacturers approve B5, but it advises drivers to consult vehicle and engine warranty statements before using biodiesel. Its broad guidance does not replace the requirements for an individual vehicle.

Think of compatibility as several checks rather than a single yes-or-no question. The blend must be within the vehicle’s limit, the fuel must meet the required quality standard, and any instructions about climate, storage or servicing must be followed. A vehicle may be approved for a particular blend only under stated conditions. If you cannot find those conditions or the permitted maximum, pause and get an answer for your exact vehicle instead of relying on a general rule.

What B5, B20 and B100 mean

The “B” number describes the biodiesel share of the fuel blend. Under the AFDC’s definitions, B5 contains up to 5% biodiesel; B20 contains 6% to 20%; and B100 is pure biodiesel, used mainly as blendstock. B20 is therefore a range, not a guarantee that every batch contains exactly 20% biodiesel.

Label Biodiesel content in DOE usage What to keep in mind
B5 Up to 5% DOE says B5 is approved for diesel engines designed for petroleum diesel. Check the manual for the applicable fuel requirements.
B20 6% to 20% Compatibility is vehicle-specific. Confirm the maximum blend and any conditions in the manual or with the manufacturer.
B100 Pure biodiesel Used mainly as blendstock. DOE says it requires special handling and may require equipment modifications, so do not treat it as a routine drop-in fuel for an unspecified passenger vehicle.

In U.S. standards, ASTM D975 permits diesel fuel containing up to B5 to be sold as diesel without separate concentration labeling, while B6–B20 blends are covered by ASTM D7467. Pump labels and labeling obligations can differ by jurisdiction. If you cannot tell what a station is selling, ask the station or fuel supplier rather than inferring the blend from a general product name.

This distinction can matter when a driver sees a pump marked “diesel” but the vehicle’s instructions specify a limit such as B5. In the U.S. context, the absence of a separate B5 concentration label does not itself establish that the fuel is a higher blend; it may fall within the ASTM D975 category. But when the pump or supplier information is unclear, do not guess from the word “diesel.” Ask what blend is being sold and what fuel standard it meets, then compare that information with the manual.

How to check whether your vehicle can use B20 or another higher blend

  1. Identify the exact vehicle. Record the model year, make, model, engine and market specification. A manual for a different engine option, model year or country may give a different fuel limit.
  2. Find the fuel instructions. In the owner’s manual, look under headings such as “Fuel requirements,” “Diesel fuel,” “Biodiesel” or “Warranty.” Check any separate diesel supplement as well as the main manual.
  3. Write down the maximum and the conditions. Note the highest blend permitted and any limits involving temperature, storage, fuel quality, filters, oil or service intervals. A maximum blend is not the only instruction that may matter.
  4. Read the pump label against that limit. DOE uses B5 for up to 5% biodiesel and B20 for 6%–20%. Do not treat a B20 label as equivalent to B5, or assume the permitted blend based on what other vehicles at the station use.
  5. Check the fuel standard and supplier requirements. For U.S. context, DOE identifies ASTM D7467 for B6–B20 blends and ASTM D6751 for B100 blendstock. Follow any additional quality or supplier instructions in the vehicle manual.
  6. Ask the manufacturer or dealer if the manual is unclear. Give them your exact vehicle details and the blend you want to use. Keep the answer, especially if it clarifies a warranty or operating condition.

Use the manual’s stated requirements and any current manufacturer guidance together. If the manual names an ASTM standard, check that the fuel meets the required standard and edition; a blend percentage alone does not establish fuel quality.

When contacting a dealer or manufacturer, make the question specific enough to get a useful answer. State the vehicle’s model year, engine and market, the blend shown on the pump or offered by the supplier, and the fuel standard if it is available. Ask whether that exact blend is permitted, whether the permission has conditions, and whether any maintenance steps apply. If the answer is verbal, note who provided it and when, or ask for written confirmation. This gives you something clear to refer back to if you later need to verify the guidance.

If a supplier uses a product name rather than a clear blend percentage, ask for the biodiesel content range instead of trying to decode the name. A B20 label represents a range from 6% to 20% in DOE usage, so it is not interchangeable with a lower ceiling simply because the actual content might be less than the maximum on a particular day. Match the stated category and quality requirements to the vehicle’s instructions.

Why a diesel vehicle’s approval cannot be generalized

Biodiesel compatibility depends on the vehicle and its instructions, not merely on whether it has a diesel engine. The AFDC says many current engines can use B20 or lower without modifications, but specifically tells owners to check vehicle and engine warranty statements for higher blends. That guidance is useful context, not a blanket B20 approval.

Manufacturer examples illustrate why checking the exact application matters. A 2018 General Motors Duramax supplement warns against blends above B20 for the application it covers. A 2025 Kia page for European-market vehicles describes B7 and specified B30 use for equipped engines. Those are limited examples for the vehicles and markets named; they do not establish the permitted blend for other GM or Kia vehicles, or for vehicles sold elsewhere.

Follow the instructions for your vehicle’s own market. The same nameplate can have different engines, fuel systems or published requirements across years and regions. Do not transfer an allowance from a newer vehicle, a different engine or another country’s manual to your own.

It is also worth separating three ideas that can sound alike: a general technical statement, a manufacturer’s fuel approval and a warranty condition. A general statement that many engines can use B20 without modifications does not identify your engine. A statement for one model-year supplement does not automatically cover another application. And even when a fuel is technically usable, the manual may describe fuel-quality, service or operating conditions that still apply. For a decision about your own vehicle, the exact manual and current manufacturer guidance are the relevant references.

Fuel standards: what the blend label does and does not tell you

A blend label describes biodiesel percentage, but percentage is not a substitute for the fuel-quality standard required by the vehicle. DOE identifies these U.S. standards:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Standard Fuel category in DOE guidance Practical use in a compatibility check
ASTM D975 Diesel fuel containing up to B5 Check whether the manual specifies this standard or additional requirements.
ASTM D7467 B6–B20 blends For a permitted higher blend, verify that the fuel meets the standard required by the manual.
ASTM D6751 B100 blendstock Relevant to B100 used as blendstock, not a general endorsement of B100 as vehicle fuel.

These are DOE’s U.S. references; local regulations, pump terminology and current standard editions may vary. Use the vehicle’s manual for its required standard and the applicable current edition. Manufacturer instructions may also require a particular supplier or add conditions beyond the standard.

In practical terms, two questions need answers: “How much biodiesel is in this fuel?” and “Does the fuel meet the quality specification required for this vehicle?” A blend percentage answers only the first. For example, finding that a fuel is labeled B20 does not by itself show that it meets the standard specified by a vehicle manual. Conversely, a reference to a standard does not override a vehicle’s maximum blend limit. Check both.

What can change when you use a higher blend

Filters and released deposits

DOE cautions that higher biodiesel blends may loosen deposits that have accumulated in the fuel system. Those deposits can clog filters, particularly during the first few tanks after switching to a higher blend. Some equipment manuals specify filter preparation or other service steps, but that does not mean every driver should replace a filter preemptively. Follow the instructions for your vehicle and ask a qualified service provider if the manual calls for a step you are unsure how to perform.

Do not buy or install a different filter on the assumption that every vehicle needs an upgrade for biodiesel. Filter requirements are application-specific, and a correct part must match the vehicle. If the manual or manufacturer calls for a particular filter or service step, use that guidance. If it says nothing about a preemptive change, DOE’s general warning about possible initial clogging is not a universal instruction to replace parts.

Cold weather

Higher biodiesel content can gel in cold temperatures. Follow the vehicle manual and fuel supplier’s seasonal guidance for your location, including any restrictions tied to temperature or blend. Do not assume that a blend permitted in warm weather is automatically suitable in colder conditions.

This is especially relevant if a vehicle is used across changing seasons or in a region where temperatures vary. Check whether the manual places a temperature condition on the approved blend and ask the fuel supplier about seasonal recommendations. The applicable guidance should come from the vehicle manufacturer and supplier rather than from a blanket temperature threshold, since none applies to every vehicle and fuel situation.

Fuel storage

DOE also identifies storage as a consideration for higher blends. If you keep diesel fuel for later use, check the manual and supplier guidance for storage conditions and any blend-specific limits rather than assuming stored biodiesel fuel behaves like the fuel you normally buy at a pump.

If fuel will sit unused, include that fact when asking for advice. A vehicle’s permission to use a blend while operating does not automatically answer questions about how to store that fuel. Follow the applicable supplier and manufacturer instructions for the blend and conditions involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Energy content and fuel economy

DOE estimates that B20 has 1% to 2% less energy per gallon than petroleum diesel. Some drivers may not notice a difference in performance or economy, but that general estimate does not predict the result for a particular vehicle, route or driving pattern. It is one consideration—not a reason to exceed the blend limit in the manual.

The estimate is a comparison of energy per gallon, not a promise about a specific change in miles per gallon or vehicle performance. If economy is a concern, treat the DOE figure as general context and the vehicle’s compatibility instructions as the deciding limit. Do not assume that a small energy difference makes an unapproved blend acceptable.

If the station sells only a blend above your vehicle’s limit

If your manual permits no more than B5 and the available pump is labeled B20, do not use that fuel on the assumption that “diesel” means it meets your vehicle’s limit. Ask the station or supplier whether a compliant lower blend is available, or look for another source that can confirm the blend and required fuel quality. In the U.S., B5 may be sold under the ASTM D975 diesel category without separate concentration labeling, so ask what standard and blend apply if the pump information is unclear.

If no compliant fuel is available nearby, contact the manufacturer or dealer with the exact vehicle details and the pump’s stated blend. Ask whether that blend is approved for your vehicle and whether any operating or warranty conditions apply. Until you receive a clear answer, use fuel that meets the manual rather than treating local availability as evidence of approval.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A driver may reasonably worry about being unable to find a lower blend, especially where nearby stations offer only a product labeled B20. Availability does not change the vehicle’s stated ceiling. The practical next step is to confirm the product details with the supplier and ask the vehicle manufacturer or dealer about that exact blend. If the vehicle’s instructions continue to limit it to B5, a B20 pump is not made compatible simply because it is the only option nearby.

Biodiesel is not ordinary vegetable oil

Do not confuse approved biodiesel blends with raw vegetable oil. Manufacturer guidance distinguishes biodiesel fuel from ordinary vegetable oil; permission to use a specified biodiesel blend does not mean the vehicle can run on cooking oil or another unprocessed oil. Follow the fuel types named in the manual.

Quick decision checklist

  • Vehicle identified: You have the exact year, model, engine and market specification.
  • Limit found: The manual or manufacturer guidance states the maximum biodiesel blend for that application.
  • Fuel matches: The pump’s blend does not exceed the limit, and the fuel meets the required standard and quality conditions.
  • Conditions checked: You have accounted for applicable temperature, storage, filter, oil and service instructions.
  • Uncertainty resolved: If the instructions do not clearly cover the fuel, you have asked the manufacturer or dealer instead of guessing.

If one of these checks fails, do not assume the fuel is compatible. Get vehicle-specific guidance before using a higher blend.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my diesel vehicle use B20?

Possibly, but only if the instructions for your exact model year, engine and market permit it. DOE says many current engines can use B20 or lower without modifications, but it tells owners to check vehicle and engine warranty statements before using higher blends. Confirm the maximum blend, fuel standard and any operating conditions in your manual or with the manufacturer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is B20 the same as B5?

No. In DOE usage, B5 contains up to 5% biodiesel, while B20 covers 6% to 20%. A B20 label is not equivalent to a B5 ceiling, even though B20 describes a range rather than one exact percentage.

Will using B20 void my warranty?

There is no universal answer for every diesel vehicle. Warranty terms and approved blends depend on the exact application and market. Check the vehicle and engine warranty statements and ask the manufacturer or dealer about the specific blend you plan to use. Keep any vehicle-specific answer.

Does B5 need to be labeled separately at the pump?

In the U.S. context described by DOE, ASTM D975 permits diesel containing up to B5 to be sold as diesel without separate concentration labeling. Labeling rules and terminology can differ by jurisdiction. If the blend or standard is unclear, ask the station or fuel supplier.

Should I change my fuel filter before switching to a higher biodiesel blend?

Not automatically. DOE says higher blends may release accumulated deposits that can clog filters, particularly during the first few tanks. Some equipment manuals specify filter preparation or other service steps, but follow your vehicle’s instructions rather than replacing or upgrading a filter as a blanket precaution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can cold weather affect biodiesel compatibility?

Yes. Higher biodiesel content can gel in cold temperatures. Follow the vehicle manual and fuel supplier’s seasonal guidance, including any temperature or blend restrictions that apply to your vehicle and location.

Can I use cooking oil or raw vegetable oil if my vehicle allows biodiesel?

No. Approval for a specified biodiesel blend does not mean the vehicle can use ordinary vegetable oil or unprocessed cooking oil. Follow the fuel types named in the vehicle manual.

Does B20 reduce fuel economy?

DOE estimates that B20 has 1% to 2% less energy per gallon than petroleum diesel. Some users may not notice a difference in performance or economy, but the estimate does not predict the result for an individual vehicle, route or driving pattern.

The Bottom Line

You can use biodiesel only if the blend, fuel quality and operating conditions match the instructions for your exact diesel vehicle. Check the owner’s manual and warranty, verify the pump’s blend and required standard, and ask the manufacturer or dealer if anything is unclear. Do not treat general B20 guidance—or another vehicle’s approval—as permission for yours.
