Sometimes—but there is no worldwide rule, and a casino’s payment options depend on where you are, whether it is online or land-based, and how the money is funded. In Great Britain, credit cards cannot be used for gambling at licensed casinos, including through an e-wallet funded by a credit card. Rules differ elsewhere, so check the law and the licensed operator’s current payment terms before depositing.
Where are credit-card casino payments restricted?
The clearest way to compare rules is by jurisdiction. The examples below are not a complete global inventory, and a payment option offered by a casino does not by itself show that the operator is licensed or lawful where you live.
| Location | What the cited source establishes | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Great Britain | Licensed gambling operators must not accept credit-card payments for online casino gambling. Credit-card funds routed through an e-wallet are also covered. Land-based casinos must not permit credit cards for gambling transactions at payment terminals. | The Gambling Commission announced the ban on 14 April 2020; its operator guidance was last updated 17 May 2024. See the Commission’s guidance on preventing credit-card use. |
| United States | The American Gaming Association’s 2025 guide says 17 jurisdictions restricted certain financial instruments, including credit-card deposits. | This is a selected-jurisdiction snapshot as of 31 January 2025, not a complete US inventory: tribal lands regulated exclusively by tribal authorities are excluded. The guide separately reports 35 jurisdictions blocking or limiting house credit; that is not the same as restricting a customer’s own credit-card deposit. See the AGA regulations and statutes guide. |
| Queensland, Australia | The cited Queensland law permits debit-card deposits to player accounts and generally allows credit-card player-account deposits only for a nonresident visiting under a junket agreement. | This is a local rule, not a rule for all of Australia. The cited source is the Queensland Casino Control Act 1982, in-force consolidation dated 8 December 2025, including sections 66–67. |
| New Zealand | A government regulatory impact statement discussed a proposal to prohibit credit contracts, including credit cards and buy-now-pay-later, for online gambling. | The cited document is a proposal source; it does not establish that the restriction was enacted. Consult current New Zealand legislation rather than treating the proposal as a rule in force. See the Department of Internal Affairs’ regulatory impact statement. |
Why does Great Britain prohibit credit-card gambling?
The UK Gambling Commission’s stated aim is to reduce the risks of gambling with borrowed money. Its guidance says, “We expect it to be a measure that will reduce the risks of harm to many consumers by preventing them from gambling more than they can afford to repay.” The Commission summarizes research involving 475 credit-card gamblers, conducted by 2CV for its consultation: half of those sampled had a strong potential to encounter harm. That finding describes the sampled credit-card gamblers, not gamblers generally. The guidance was last updated 27 November 2025. Read the Commission’s position and harm-rationale guidance.
Borrowing to gamble can also cost more than the deposit. The Commission notes that cash advances may involve fees and interest, and that some credit-card gamblers are not fully aware of those costs. Those charges depend on the card issuer and account terms; check them directly rather than assuming a gambling transaction will be treated like an ordinary purchase.

Does a ban stop every route to borrowed money?
No. The Commission’s evaluation of the Great Britain prohibition found no evidence of systemic operator breaches and reported expected reductions in gambling-coded credit-card payments. It also found some awareness and use of workarounds. A restriction on a payment route therefore should not be mistaken for proof that no one can access borrowed funds or that gambling harm has been eliminated. See the Commission’s evaluation executive summary.
Do not assume that moving funds through another service makes a prohibited transaction acceptable. Great Britain’s rule expressly covers credit-card money routed through e-wallets. Elsewhere, the legal treatment may differ; verify the applicable local rule and the funding source the operator permits.

- Credit card: a payment drawing on a revolving credit account. It may carry interest or cash-advance fees depending on how the issuer classifies the transaction.
- Debit card: a payment drawing on funds in a linked deposit account. A rule or operator that allows debit does not thereby allow credit.
- Credit-funded e-wallet: a wallet balance funded with a credit card. In Great Britain, routing the credit-card money through an e-wallet does not take it outside the gambling restriction.
- Casino credit or a marker: credit extended by a casino, not the same thing as using your own credit card. The AGA’s count of jurisdictions that block or limit “house credit” measures this separate category.
How to check whether a casino accepts a permitted payment method
- Identify your jurisdiction. Check the regulator or official legislation for the country, state, province, or other locality where you will gamble. Do not assume a national rule applies uniformly to every territory or tribal jurisdiction.
- Separate online from land-based gambling. A rule may treat online deposits, a casino cashier, and a payment terminal differently. Confirm the channel you intend to use.
- Identify the source of funds. Confirm whether the method is credit, debit, casino-issued credit, or an e-wallet balance funded from another source. A payment brand alone may not answer this.
- Check the operator’s current cashier terms. Look for accepted deposit methods, restrictions on funding sources, and withdrawal conditions. Payment availability can change, and the sources cited here do not establish a reliable current list of individual casinos accepting cards.
- Verify the operator’s licence separately. A working deposit method or payment logo is not evidence that a casino is licensed to serve your location.
What should you do if a credit-card deposit is declined?
- Do not keep retrying the same credit-card payment through a wallet or another intermediary in an attempt to get around a restriction.
- Check the regulator’s rules and the casino’s terms, then ask the operator whether the payment method is permitted for your location and account.
- If you choose to gamble, use only a funding method that is lawful and permitted by the operator, and review its costs and withdrawal conditions first. Do not borrow to continue gambling.
