The exact rules depend on the Amazon marketplace and local law; an exception may apply if the law where you live requires a cash refund. If you cannot redeem the balance for cash, the practical option is to use it for eligible purchases on the applicable Amazon store.
Can you withdraw an Amazon gift card balance to a bank account?
Amazon does not offer a normal bank-withdrawal option for gift-card balances under the terms reviewed here. The Amazon.com terms excerpt prohibits cash redemption except to the extent required by law. If you have a small residual balance, contact Amazon Customer Service through the Amazon app or by opening the site directly, and check the rules that apply where you live. The legal requirements can vary by jurisdiction, so there is no universal cash-out threshold to rely on.
What changes if you have redeemed the card?
If the code is already on your account
Treat the redeemed amount as an Amazon account balance, not cash. The US terms excerpt says Amazon.com Balance cannot be transferred to another Amazon.com account. Amazon.co.uk terms likewise prohibit transferring an unused account balance to another Amazon.co.uk account. These are marketplace-specific restrictions, not a single rule that should be applied to every Amazon store. If the code has not been redeemed
An unredeemed code is not automatically safe or permitted to sell or exchange. Rules differ by marketplace: Amazon.co.uk terms prohibit resale and transfer for value, while Amazon.co.jp’s policy explicitly prohibits selling or exchanging gift cards for cash or another prepaid payment instrument. The Japan policy also warns that violations can lead to blocked redemption, balance revocation, or account action; those consequences should not be assumed to apply identically elsewhere. Before sharing an unused code with anyone, check the terms for the marketplace that issued it. Amazon’s US safety guidance says a legitimate gift-card transaction is completed through Amazon checkout and warns customers not to give claim codes to people who contact them. Are common cash-out workarounds a good idea?
- Moving the balance to someone else: The US and UK terms excerpts restrict transfers between accounts on their respective marketplaces. US terms excerpt UK terms
- Buying another gift card or prepaid card: The Amazon.com terms excerpt prohibits using the balance for other gift cards and prepaid open-loop cards. Do not assume this route is allowed on another marketplace. Amazon.com terms excerpt
- Buying products to resell: This is not a guaranteed conversion and can leave you with less than the balance after costs or a difficult sale. How to spot a gift-card cash-out scam
Be especially cautious if someone promises a large payment or guaranteed payout in exchange for an Amazon gift card, asks you to send the claim code, or charges a fee to release your money. Amazon says requests for gift cards in exchange for a large sum or guaranteed payment are scams, and advises customers not to share claim codes with people they do not know or trust. Amazon also advises checking suspicious messages directly in its app or on its site, rather than following a link or relying on a caller’s instructions. Amazon Pay says an Amazon.com gift-card claim code cannot be used to pay third-party merchants through Amazon Pay, and warns against claims that Amazon or Amazon Pay guarantees, refunds, or escrows an outside transaction. Use the terms for the Amazon store that issued the card. The UK terms specify eligible purchases on designated Amazon stores and say UK gift cards expire ten years after issuance; that expiration period is UK-specific and should not be applied to US cards. Japan’s policy and enforcement language are likewise specific to Amazon.co.jp. Local law may also require an exception to a no-cash rule, but the applicable right depends on where you live.
