Yes, ecommerce remained a large and growing business in 2024—but that does not mean a new store is likely to succeed. UN Trade and Development (UNCTADstat) reports $28 trillion in business ecommerce sales across 45 developed and developing economies that year, 4.4% above 2023. Those figures describe market activity, not the odds that any one seller will make a profit.
What does the 2024 ecommerce data show?
UNCTADstat’s data insight, updated May 21, 2026, puts business ecommerce sales at $28 trillion across 45 developed and developing economies in 2024. The value was 4.4% higher than in 2023. The 45 economies represented three quarters of global GDP and exports, making the figures broad in scope but not a census of every economy. UNCTADstat’s ecommerce data insight also notes that official data remain limited, particularly in developing economies.
These are business ecommerce sales, not a retail-only total or a measure of inflation-adjusted growth. UNCTAD explains that definitions and coverage differ across data sources, and that online retail is a subset of business-to-consumer ecommerce. It also warns that rising nominal online retail values can reflect higher prices rather than more goods sold. Does a large market mean a new store can succeed?
No market-wide sales figure can establish an individual seller’s chances. A large total shows that ecommerce is economically significant; it does not reveal whether a particular product has enough demand, whether its margin will cover fulfillment and returns, or how much it will cost to reach customers. Nor does the 4.4% increase forecast future growth or prove that a new business will be profitable.

Before committing money, assess the economics of the specific offer and the market where you plan to sell:
- Demand and margin: Estimate what remains after product costs, fulfillment, shipping, payment fees, returns, and other operating expenses.
- Customer acquisition: Consider how you will reach buyers, what that may cost, and how intense competition is for their attention.
- Platform and transaction costs: Compare the full costs of the selling route you are considering, rather than looking at a single headline fee.
- Geographic fit: Check whether payment methods, shipping options, and relevant platform features work in your target market.
- Evidence quality: Check what a market estimate measures, which countries it covers, and whether its values account for price changes.
What does Prime Summit Solutions’ “yes” mean?
The title refers to a TechBullion article by Ahmed Raza, published April 30, 2024. It answers the question “Is it too late in 2024 to enter the Ecommerce scene?” with an affirmative view and promotes Prime Summit Solutions’ ecommerce assistance. The article says the company helps with product research, store automation, and end-to-end business management. Those are claims made in promotional copy; they do not establish current service availability, terms, customer outcomes, or a buyer’s likelihood of success. Read the TechBullion article.

Its positive verdict should therefore be read as the company’s promotional position, not independent evidence that an entrant can succeed. The useful answer is conditional: ecommerce was substantial in 2024, but a viable business still depends on the economics and execution of its particular product, audience, and market.
