Yes—but only as a short-lived U.S. promotion in May 2024. Google reportedly offered a $399 trade-in credit for eligible iPads, enough to cover the 128GB Pixel Tablet without its Charging Speaker Dock. It was not a permanent policy, did not cover every Pixel Tablet configuration, and should not be assumed to be available in 2026. Check the live Google Store estimate for your exact iPad before treating the tablet as free.
What the “free Pixel Tablet” offer actually covered
The promotion reported on May 9, 2024, applied during the Pixel Tablet pre-order period. The offer was scheduled to ship on May 14 and was described as lasting only a few days. The reported credit was $399 for an iPad from the 2018 sixth-generation model or newer.
That credit matched the listed price of the base, dockless 128GB tablet. It did not make the dock bundle or the 256GB model free.

Google’s current U.S. store lists the tablet at $399 for 128GB, $499 for 256GB, and $499 for the tablet with the dock. Those prices do not establish that the old $399 promotional credit is still available.

Is the deal still available?
There is no evidence that the May 2024 bonus remains a standing Google offer. The current product page supports a normal trade-in estimate, but the amount is specific to your account, model, storage, condition and any promotion shown at checkout.
For a current purchase, treat the 2024 headline as historical unless checkout displays the same value for your iPad. A normal $399 tablet price plus a smaller trade-in quote is a different deal.
Which iPads qualified?
The 2024 report described the cutoff as the sixth-generation standard iPad from 2018 and newer. That wording does not guarantee that every iPad Air, iPad mini or iPad Pro, storage tier or cellular version receives the same value today.
Google’s estimator asks for the manufacturer, exact model, storage and condition. Use that device selector rather than relying on a broad “2018 or newer” list.

How to check your live Google Store offer
- Open the U.S. Pixel Tablet configuration page.
- Select the 128GB tablet-only configuration if you are checking whether the product price can reach zero.
- Choose Get estimate or Sign in and get estimate.
- Select the exact iPad model, storage capacity and connectivity option.
- Answer every condition question accurately, including screen damage, functional buttons and whether the device powers on.
- Add the trade-in during checkout and confirm the displayed credit.
- Check whether Google offers an upfront instant discount or a later refund, and read what happens if inspection changes the value.
Google’s checkout guidance says the final value depends on the device Google receives, not only on the initial questionnaire.
Standard versus instant trade-in
Standard trade-in
With a standard trade-in, you buy the new device, receive a trade-in kit, send the iPad to Google’s trade-in partner and wait for inspection. Google says the offer generally expires 30 days after you receive the new device. Devices are usually checked within five business days after receipt, and card refunds can take up to 14 business days after processing. See the current U.S. trade-in terms for the applicable details.
Instant trade-in
Some eligible U.S. customers may see the trade-in value applied immediately as an upfront discount. Google says this option is limited to eligible users and generally to one trade-in per user. The discount remains conditional: if inspection finds a different model, storage or condition than you declared, Google can reduce the value and charge the difference.
Why “free” may still cost money
- Taxes: A zero product balance does not guarantee a zero checkout total. Sales-tax treatment depends on your jurisdiction and the transaction shown at checkout.
- The dock: The historical $0 configuration was the tablet alone. The Charging Speaker Dock was not included.
- Storage: The 256GB model cost $100 more than the historical credit.
- Optional purchases: Protection plans, cases, keyboards, styluses and other accessories add cost.
- Delayed refund: A standard trade-in can require you to pay first and wait for the refund.
- Inspection adjustment: A downgraded device can turn a supposedly free order into a discounted purchase.
If the trade-in credit exceeds the Pixel’s price, Google says the excess is issued as Google Store credit rather than cash. The treatment of returns after an iPad has been submitted should be checked in the current terms before shipping the old device.

What you receive instead of an iPad
The Pixel Tablet has a 10.95-inch LCD display with 2560 × 1600 resolution, Google’s Tensor G2 processor, 128GB or 256GB storage, Wi-Fi-only connectivity and support for USI 2.0 styluses. Google claims up to 12 hours of video streaming battery life. Specifications are listed at Google’s technical-specification page.
The tablet is Wi-Fi only, so it does not replace a cellular iPad unless you are comfortable using Wi-Fi or phone tethering. The dock adds charging and speaker functionality when the tablet is docked; Google’s product page says it is designed to work with the Pixel Tablet when docked, not as a general Bluetooth speaker for arbitrary devices. When switching from an iPad makes sense
Likely good fit
- You already use an Android phone or Google Home products.
- Your tablet use is mainly browsing, streaming, reading and Google apps.
- You want a household tablet that can stay on a counter or desk.
- Your iPad is old and rarely used.
Potentially poor fit
- You rely on Apple Pencil workflows or iPad-specific professional and creative apps.
- You use a Mac with AirDrop, iCloud, Sidecar or other Apple continuity features.
- You need cellular connectivity or iPad Pro-class performance.
- You would have to replace expensive accessories, subscriptions or app purchases.
A trade-in bonus proves only the value Google assigned to the old device. It does not make Android apps, accessories or ecosystem features equivalent to those on your particular iPad.

Compare the Google quote with the amount you could actually net from another option—not the iPad’s original retail price. A private sale may produce more, but listing fees, shipping, fraud exposure and buyer disputes reduce the proceeds. A specialist refurbisher or Apple trade-in can be simpler, while keeping the iPad avoids switching costs and gives you a second device.

Use this calculation:
Net switching cost = Pixel Tablet price + tax + required accessories or replacements − final trade-in value − realistic net sale proceeds you give up.
For the historical credit, the arithmetic was $399 − $399 = $0 before tax for the 128GB dockless tablet, and $499 − $399 = $100 before tax for either the 256GB tablet or the tablet-plus-dock configuration. Your current quote may be different.
Protect yourself from a reduced valuation
- Save screenshots of the quoted amount, selected model and storage, condition answers and order confirmation.
- Record the iPad’s serial number and photograph its screen, body and power-on state before packing it.
- Back up the iPad, sign out of Apple ID, disable Find My and erase all content before shipment.
- Keep the tracking receipt until inspection and payment are complete.
- Read the current acceptance and changed-value options before choosing instant trade-in.
Bottom line
Google really did make a 128GB, dockless Pixel Tablet effectively free for some U.S. customers who traded in an eligible iPad during a brief May 2024 promotion. The claim is misleading when presented as a current, universal offer. In 2026, verify the exact quote in Google Store checkout, account for tax and inspection risk, and compare the credit with the iPad’s realistic resale value and the cost of leaving Apple’s ecosystem.
