Usually, no: Micro Center does not generally buy ordinary used electronics from consumers. Its standing trade-in program is limited to eligible, working graphics cards (GPUs) bought from Micro Center as standalone products. If accepted after an in-store inspection, a GPU earns a Micro Center gift card—not cash. Other electronics may qualify for recycling or, in some cases, donation, but those are not sales.
Policies and local availability can change. The guidance below reflects Micro Center’s published program terms checked August 18, 2026; confirm the live terms and your store’s availability before making a trip.
What can you sell or trade in at Micro Center?
Micro Center’s current general policy is not an open buy-back service for used electronics. The main standing exception is its GPU Trade-In Program, which has specific purchase, condition, and verification requirements. Recycling, donation, returns, and temporary manufacturer promotions are different transactions and do not mean the store will buy any used item.
| Item or situation | Can Micro Center buy or trade it in? | Typical outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible standalone GPU bought from Micro Center | Potentially, under the GPU Trade-In Program | Micro Center gift card after inspection and diagnostic testing |
| GPU bought from another retailer or from another person | Not under the standing GPU program | Consider a private sale, another trade-in service, or recycling |
| GPU included in a prebuilt computer | Not eligible as a standalone GPU under the program terms | Sell the full computer or sell the GPU separately elsewhere |
| Laptop, desktop, phone, tablet, or game console | No ordinary buy-back | Potential recycling or donation route; otherwise sell elsewhere |
| Monitor, TV, printer, keyboard, mouse, router, or other peripheral | No ordinary buy-back | Potential recycling or sale elsewhere; a temporary promotion may differ |
| CPU, RAM, SSD, hard drive, motherboard, or other PC component | No ordinary buy-back | Sell elsewhere or check recycling eligibility |
| Recent purchase still within its return window | Not a used-item sale | Refund or exchange may be possible under the return policy |
Micro Center’s trade-in and buy-back FAQ identifies the GPU program as its standing consumer trade-in service. Its recycling and donation program covers other types of electronics, subject to program and store details.

How Micro Center’s GPU trade-in works
The GPU Trade-In Program is for qualifying graphics cards purchased from Micro Center as standalone items. Micro Center checks eligibility and condition; a value shown online is an estimate, not a guaranteed offer.
- Sign in to the Micro Center account used for the purchase, if you have access to it.
- Open your order history and locate the GPU. Use the trade-in value lookup if available, or use the program’s lookup tool with the GPU’s serial number.
- Record the estimate and arrange a trade-in consultation with a local store. Check the store’s current instructions before travelling.
- Bring the GPU to the Service Department for inspection and diagnostic testing.
- Review the final offer. Accepting transfers the GPU to Micro Center and earns a Micro Center gift card; declining lets you keep the card.
The program terms say Micro Center determines the final value after its diagnostic check and may reject an item, limit quantities, or change a quoted value. The estimate does not bind the store. If you accept, the payout is store purchasing power—not cash, a bank transfer, or a general-purpose payment. Do not assume the card can be redeemed for cash or transferred; check the current gift-card terms if that matters to you.
GPU eligibility: purchase history, condition, and ownership
- It must have been bought from Micro Center. A GPU purchased elsewhere does not qualify under the standing program. A missing paper receipt does not necessarily end the inquiry: the program describes verification through order history or the GPU’s serial number. Micro Center still has to verify eligibility and ownership.
- It must have been purchased as a standalone item. A GPU that came inside a prebuilt computer is not the same as a standalone GPU purchase and does not meet the stated program requirement.
- It cannot be refurbished. Refurbished GPUs are excluded by the program terms.
- It must pass inspection. The card is subject to in-store diagnostics. A failure to display an image, instability, artifacting, cooling problems, visible damage, corrosion, tampering, or altered firmware may raise inspection concerns, but Micro Center’s published terms do not provide an exhaustive rejection checklist.
- You must have authority to transfer it. Do not submit property you do not own or are not authorized to transfer. The terms reserve Micro Center’s ability to reject items and limit transactions.
- Financing does not disappear. If you bought the GPU through an installment plan, you remain responsible for outstanding payments even if Micro Center accepts the trade-in.
Purchase verification alone does not guarantee acceptance. The program’s terms also require the customer to remove passwords, user locks, account links, and personal data that could prevent Micro Center from using, refurbishing, recycling, reselling, or disposing of the item.

- EFFORTLESS BAG REMOVAL: Venting channels make removing liners from the container up to 80% easier, improving productivity and reducing the risk of injury.
- TRASH BAG CINCHES: 4 bag cinches secure liners around the rim of the container and create quick, knot-free liner changes.
- ERGONOMIC HANDLES: Robust handles at the base and rim of the container resist tearing and improve control while lifting and emptying.
- STRUCTURAL RIBBING: Rib-strengthened rim resists crushing while the step design prevents jamming when nested.
What to bring and how to prepare
- The GPU itself and its serial number.
- Access to the Micro Center account or order information associated with the purchase.
- Original packaging and accessories, if you still have them. The program terms do not promise a higher value for a box or accessories.
- Any adapters or cables that are needed to test the card, if applicable.
- A government-issued ID if your store requests one; the published program terms do not establish a universal ID requirement.
- If you are handing over a larger device as part of a separate recycling or donation transaction, back up your files and remove personal data first.
Do not flash the GPU BIOS or erase firmware just to prepare the card. Remove account restrictions and locks, but avoid changes that could complicate diagnostics. For computers, phones, tablets, drives, and consoles, use the manufacturer-supported backup, sign-out, reset, and secure-erase steps; remove SIM cards, SD cards, and USB storage. Micro Center’s GPU terms and recycling information put responsibility for backing up and removing data on the customer. You may not be able to recover data after transfer.

Compare the gift-card amount with realistic net proceeds elsewhere before accepting. For a private sale, estimate:
Net proceeds = sale price − marketplace and payment fees − shipping, insurance, and packaging − expected dispute or return costs − the value of your time.

- 16-Quart Capacity – Ideal for household or office recycling needs.
- Compact Design – Fits neatly under desks, tables, or cabinets.
- Heavy-Duty Polypropylene – Durable construction resists cracks and dents.
- Stackable Shape – Designed for easy storage and efficient shipping.

A gift card is worth less than the same amount in cash if you would not otherwise spend it at Micro Center. If the card is rejected or the quote is not worthwhile, you can decline the offer and retain the GPU. A card from a prebuilt system is not eligible under the standing program; you could instead sell the complete computer or remove and sell the GPU yourself if you are comfortable doing so.
Recycling and donating items Micro Center will not buy
Micro Center’s recycling program accepts many categories of consumer electronics, including TVs, computers and tablets, cellphones, ink and toner, peripherals, components, networking equipment, smart-home devices, and game consoles. It is intended for individual consumers, not business or commercial use. The company says it works with certified recycling vendors and offers store appointments; walk-ins may also be accepted. Accepted items and practical availability can vary, so check with your specific store before travelling.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRecycling is disposal, not a sale: do not expect cash or store credit unless a separate, current offer explicitly says otherwise. Transfer may also mean you cannot retrieve the device or its data afterward.

Donation of working computers
The recycling page also describes a Compudopt donation route for working desktops and laptops, with a tax receipt. A receipt is not a guarantee that a donation is deductible or of a particular value. Consult current IRS guidance or a tax professional about your circumstances.
Temporary promotions are not a general buy-back policy
Micro Center may occasionally host manufacturer-sponsored trade-in promotions. These are temporary coupons or discounts, not evidence of a general used-electronics buy-back program. Check the current offer’s item, purchase, and redemption terms before visiting.
For example, a Micro Center notice described an HP printer trade-in promotion running March 29 through June 27, 2026. It allowed a used printer, including non-HP models, to be traded for a coupon toward selected new HP printers; shipping orders were excluded and 3D printers were not eligible. That promotion had expired by August 18, 2026, so it should not be treated as an available offer. See the Micro Center HP printer trade-in notice for the terms stated there.

A return is not the same as selling a used item
A return reverses a recent purchase under the store’s return policy; a trade-in transfers an older item in exchange for credit. Micro Center’s return policy lists a 15-day return period for several categories, including desktop and notebook computers, tablets, processors, motherboards, digital cameras, projectors, cell phones, and 3D printers. Many other products have a 30-day period. The applicable window depends on the item and policy exclusions, so consult the live policy and your receipt. A return is not a route for selling an out-of-window used product.

Where else can you sell used electronics?
Choose based on what matters most: cash, convenience, reach, or avoiding shipping. Compare actual net proceeds rather than advertised sale prices.
| Option | Best fit | Main trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Local private sale | Bulky desktops, monitors, printers, or a seller seeking cash without shipping | More screening and meeting logistics; no-shows, scams, and personal-safety concerns are possible |
| eBay | High-value or specialized hardware that benefits from a national buyer pool | Listing and shipping work, fees, returns, disputes, and shipping-damage risk |
| Swappa | Supported phones, tablets, laptops, and other eligible consumer technology | Narrower product eligibility than a general marketplace; still requires accurate descriptions and shipping |
| Manufacturer, carrier, or specialist trade-in | Supported phones, tablets, laptops, or consoles when ease matters more than cash maximization | Offers depend on exact model, condition, account or carrier status, and current promotions; reward may be credit rather than cash |
| Recycling or donation | Items with little resale value or a desire for responsible disposal | Generally no cash; donation receipts do not themselves establish tax deductibility |
eBay: reach in exchange for fees and work
eBay’s fee schedule varies by category and can change. The official schedule checked August 18, 2026 listed final-value fees of 9.35% up to $2,500 and 2.35% above that threshold for cameras, cell phones, and most consumer electronics; for computers, it listed 7.35% up to $2,500 and 2.35% above, plus a $0.40 per-order fee for orders over $10. Account or store status may affect fees. Review the current eBay Seller Center fee schedule before calculating your asking price. Photograph the item and serial number, pack it securely, and retain packing and shipping evidence for expensive electronics.
Swappa: a tech-focused marketplace
Swappa says listings are free and the seller pays a flat 3% sale fee; the buyer also pays a 3% fee. Payment processing may add charges: its fee page lists PayPal at 3.49% + $0.49 and Stripe at 2.9% + $0.30. These figures were checked August 18, 2026; check Swappa’s current fee terms and confirm the device is eligible before listing. Swappa can suit supported consumer devices, but do not assume every PC component or accessory is accepted.

Local marketplaces: avoid shipping, manage the handoff
Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and local community groups can be practical for bulky or low-margin items. Fees and payment arrangements depend on the listing and transaction method, so do not assume every sale is fee-free. Meet in a public place when practical, accept only payment you can verify, and do not hand over the device until payment is final. Avoid overpayment-and-refund schemes.
Quick Recap
Which option should you choose?
- You have an eligible Micro Center GPU and plan to shop there: check the estimate and compare it with your realistic after-cost sale proceeds.
- You need cash or your item is not eligible: compare local buyers and marketplaces; account for fees, shipping, effort, and risk.
- You value convenience over maximizing proceeds: check manufacturer, carrier, or specialist buy-back offers for the exact device and current condition.
- The item has little resale value, or you want responsible disposal: check Micro Center’s recycling options and store availability; consider donation for a working desktop or laptop if the program accepts it.
Before you visit or hand over a device
- Confirm whether the transaction is a trade-in, return, recycling, donation, or temporary promotion—and what you receive: cash, store credit, coupon, tax receipt, or nothing.
- For a GPU trade-in, verify the Micro Center standalone-purchase requirement and check the live program terms and store instructions.
- Back up important files, sign out of accounts, remove locks, and reset or securely erase devices using the manufacturer’s supported process.
- Bring the GPU’s serial number and purchase information; include useful testing accessories if available.
- Compare the final store-credit offer with a realistic net resale figure, including fees and shipping.
- Check local recycling or consultation availability before making a long trip.
