Possibly, but an ordinary fit issue does not guarantee a refund once shoes have been worn. Check the return terms for your specific order, then contact the seller promptly and describe honestly how much the shoes were worn and what is wrong with the fit. Ask whether the seller will accept a return, exchange, or exception. If you suspect a defect or that the shoes were not as described, explain the specific problem separately from a comfort or fit preference.
What to do first
- Check the policy attached to your purchase. Look at the receipt, order confirmation, or the seller’s current return page for the deadline and condition requirements. Rules can differ by retailer and may also depend on whether you bought online or in a store.
- Contact the seller promptly. Provide the purchase date, order number or receipt, how and where you wore the shoes, the exact fit problem, and their current condition. Ask directly whether a return, exchange, or exception is possible.
- Keep the shoes and packaging as they are. Save the original box, tags, proof of purchase, and any included materials. Take clear photos of the soles and uppers; send them if requested. Don’t conceal outdoor wear or alter the shoes before the seller responds.
- Keep a written record. If the seller refuses, ask for the reason in writing. If you believe the shoes are faulty or misdescribed, consult the consumer-protection authority for your location about any rights that may apply.
Fit issue or possible product fault?
Uncomfortable shoes are not automatically defective. Describe a fit preference accurately—for example, that the shoes feel too narrow or rub at the heel. If you suspect a fault, identify what seems wrong, such as a mismatch with the listed size or description, a manufacturing problem, or a failure during ordinary use, and explain when it appeared. Don’t call the shoes faulty if the only issue is that they feel uncomfortable.
Your location matters. In the UK, GOV.UK says, “You must offer a full refund if an item is faulty, not as described or does not do what it’s supposed to.” Its guidance also distinguishes distance sales from in-person purchases and says a retailer generally is not required to accept an in-store change-of-mind return. These are UK rules; check the law where you live rather than assuming the same rights apply elsewhere. GOV.UK: Accepting returns and giving refunds.
Why the seller’s policy matters
Retailer examples show why there is no universal answer. Macy’s generally excludes worn or used merchandise and advises trying shoes indoors, preferably on carpet, with returns in the original undamaged box. ASOS permits a store-like try-on but says worn or unsuitable-condition items may not be refunded. Zalando UK says unused items may be returned within 30 days and that trying something on does not count as wearing it. Harvey Nichols’ US policy calls for shoes to be tried on carpet and returned unmarked in the original undamaged box, and says worn or soiled returns may not be accepted. THE ICONIC says a change-of-mind return is unavailable when shoes have been worn and are no longer in original condition.
