Can You Retire on Social Security Alone? Common Questions and Realistic Costs

Whether Social Security alone can support retirement depends on your own benefit and costs. Learn how to estimate the gap using 2026 benefit and Medicare figures.

Sometimes—but there is no reliable yes-or-no answer based on a national average. Whether Social Security can cover your retirement depends on your own benefit and your actual costs, especially housing, health care, transportation, debt, and household size. The useful test is to compare your estimated benefit with a realistic monthly budget, then decide how to handle any shortfall.

What Social Security might pay in 2026

Social Security does not pay every retired worker the same amount. The Social Security Administration (SSA) says retirement benefits depend on earnings history, the age benefits begin, and the year of retirement. Your own estimate—not a national average—is the starting point for deciding whether benefits could cover your expenses.

For context, SSA estimated the average retired-worker benefit payable in January 2026 at $2,071 per month. That figure reflects the 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) effective for benefits payable in January. SSA’s fact sheet gives an average of $2,015 before that adjustment; the adjusted January estimate is not a promise of what any particular person will receive. See the 2026 COLA fact sheet and SSA’s average-benefit FAQ.

A separate SSA snapshot reports an average monthly payment of $2,079 for a retired worker alone on June 30, 2026, and $3,230 for a retired worker and an aged spouse. These are payments at a particular date, not a projection or guarantee for a future household. The difference between the January estimate and June snapshot reflects that they describe different dates and measures. SSA notes that the average changes monthly. Its June 30, 2026 fact sheet provides the household figures.

The maximum benefit is not a realistic stand-in for a typical check. For someone with maximum taxable earnings in every year from age 22 who starts benefits in 2026, SSA’s examples are:

Claiming age Example monthly maximum What to keep in mind
62 $2,969 SSA’s example assumes maximum taxable earnings in every year from age 22.
Full retirement age $4,152 The example is not a personalized estimate; full retirement age depends on birth year.
70 $5,181 The example assumes the same maximum-earnings record and a 2026 start.

These examples come from SSA’s maximum-benefit FAQ. Full retirement age is 67 for people born in 1960 or later, according to SSA Fast Facts & Figures About Social Security, 2026. Your own earnings record and claiming date can produce a substantially different amount.

Why national spending averages cannot answer the question

It is tempting to put the average Social Security check next to an average spending figure and declare whether retirement is affordable. That comparison can mislead: the figures may describe different types and sizes of households, and the spending data are not limited to retirees.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported average annual expenditures of $78,535 in 2024 for all consumer units—about $6,545 per month. A consumer unit can include more than one person, and the survey population includes working-age households as well as retirees. BLS therefore does not establish that a typical retiree needs this amount, or that an individual living on less cannot manage. The figures are broad context, not a retirement budget. See BLS Consumer expenditures in 2024.

Two large spending categories in the same 2024 data illustrate why the result depends on a person’s circumstances. Across all consumer units, housing averaged $26,266 per year, or $2,189 monthly, while transportation averaged $13,318 per year, or $1,110 monthly. Those are not estimates for an individual retiree. Housing tenure, location, household composition, and the need for a car can make a personal budget look very different. BLS reports these category figures in Housing and transportation accounted for 50 percent of household spending in 2024.

How to test whether your own benefit covers your costs

Build the comparison with your expected take-home income and expenses, not a generalized “retirement number.” Use monthly amounts for recurring bills, and set aside a monthly allowance for expenses that arrive only occasionally.

  1. Get your own benefit estimate. Use your SSA account or the agency’s benefit information to review estimates for the claiming ages you are considering. Check that your recorded earnings are accurate, and note the estimate’s assumptions and intended start date.
  2. Decide which claiming-age scenario to budget around. Write down when payments would begin and the monthly amount shown for each scenario. Do not assume an illustrative maximum or a national average is your likely benefit.
  3. List housing costs you will actually pay. Include rent or mortgage payments, property tax, insurance, utilities, and maintenance. If you expect to share housing, include only the amount you expect to be responsible for; if you own a home outright, still account for taxes, insurance, utilities, and repairs.
  4. Add health coverage and care costs. Include premiums, prescriptions, copayments, and other expected out-of-pocket spending. If you are Medicare-eligible, use your own coverage details rather than assuming Medicare eliminates those expenses.
  5. Budget for food, transportation, and everyday bills. Estimate groceries and meals, vehicle costs or public transit, communications, and other recurring expenses based on your actual habits and location.
  6. Include obligations and irregular costs. Add debt payments, taxes where applicable, support for relatives, and a monthly reserve for costs such as dental care or home repairs. A budget that omits periodic bills can make a small apparent surplus disappear.
  7. Compare expenses with reliable income. Total your expected monthly costs and compare them with Social Security and any other dependable income. Record a surplus or shortfall, rather than treating the exercise as a pass/fail judgment about retirement.

Remember that Medicare has costs

Medicare can help cover health care, but it does not make care free. In 2026, the standard Medicare Part B premium is $202.90 per month, and the Part B deductible is $283 for the year. The premium may be higher depending on income. These amounts are only part of a health budget: your coverage choices and care needs can also involve other premiums, cost sharing, prescriptions, or services. When you estimate your own expenses, separate premiums from costs that vary with care. A month with few appointments may not represent a year that includes prescriptions, dental work, or other treatment. Use the coverage information that applies to you, and leave room in the budget for the costs that are difficult to predict.

Does waiting to claim make living on benefits easier?

SSA’s 2026 maximum-earner examples show that the monthly benefit differs by claiming age, but they do not identify the best age for a particular person. A larger monthly amount later may not solve an immediate cash-flow problem if you need income sooner. The relevant comparison is between the benefit amount at each age and the years you would wait for payments to begin.

Before choosing a date, consider your health, cash needs, work plans, household circumstances, and whether a spouse or another family member may be affected by the decision. These factors cannot be inferred from national averages. Compare your own SSA estimates and, if the choice has significant consequences, consider getting help from a qualified benefits or financial professional. Delaying is not automatically the right move for everyone.

What to consider if your budget shows a gap

A shortfall is a signal to examine the assumptions and possible adjustments; it does not mean there is one universal fix. Look first at the largest costs and the options that are realistic for your household.

  • Housing: Check whether a move, different housing arrangement, or sharing expenses is feasible, accounting for moving costs and the effect on access to services and family support.
  • Transportation: Review whether your budget depends on a car and whether a less costly arrangement is practical where you live.
  • Income and savings: Consider whether part-time earnings or savings could supplement benefits, while accounting for the effect on your time, health, taxes, or other plans.
  • Assistance: Check eligibility for programs that may help with food, housing, health costs, or utilities. Eligibility depends on program rules and personal circumstances; do not count assistance as income until you confirm that you qualify.
  • Budget assumptions: Recheck bills, debt, and irregular costs. A budget based on an unusually low month may understate what you need over a full year.

Some changes are unavailable or carry trade-offs. A lower-cost home may be farther from care or relatives; additional work may not be possible; and using savings reduces the amount left for later years. Evaluate each option against your own needs rather than assuming that a benefit gap can always be closed.

What the poverty statistics do—and do not—show

Social Security has a substantial role in reducing poverty, but that population-level impact does not prove that benefits are sufficient for every recipient. The U.S. Census Bureau estimated that Social Security moved 28.7 million individuals out of Supplemental Poverty Measure (SPM) poverty in 2024. That result describes the program’s effect across the population under the SPM; it is not the share of retirees who can meet all expenses using Social Security alone. See the Census Bureau’s 2024 income, poverty, and health insurance release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A separate Census article reported that Social Security was the sole source of income for 28% of adult recipients in 2021. This is a historical finding, not a 2026 estimate, and “sole source of income” does not establish whether each person’s expenses were fully covered. The Census discussion of older adults and poverty provides that context.

How to read the answer for your household

Social Security alone can cover retirement for some people, particularly when their actual expenses are low enough relative to their benefit. For others, the benefit leaves a gap. The decisive information is the combination of your own estimated check, your housing and health costs, debts and obligations, household size, and the resources you can reliably use—not whether someone else’s average appears adequate.

Revisit your estimate using current SSA and Medicare figures. The benefit and Medicare amounts in this article are tied to 2026; the BLS spending measures cover 2024 and were reported in 2026, while the Census poverty result covers 2024. Official amounts and your circumstances may change, so rely on current agency information for your personal decisions.
