The public can bid on some unclaimed USPS merchandise through the Postal Service’s official auction storefront on GovDeals. These are occasional sales of merchandise in lots—not a regular shop for individual sealed “mystery packages”—and each listing sets its own terms.
What happens to mail before USPS auctions merchandise?
USPS identifies its Mail Recovery Center (MRC) as its official lost-and-found department for undeliverable, non-returnable mail. The Postal Service may examine contents and use available information to identify a sender or recipient, so it can deliver or return the item before disposition. Its Domestic Mail Manual says undeliverable articles valued at $25 or more are treated as dead mail and that dead parcels are opened at the MRC to determine whether they can be delivered or returned.
The USPS MRC FAQ describes holding periods of 60 days for qualifying barcoded pieces and 30 days for qualifying non-barcoded pieces that meet its stated value criteria. These are USPS process periods, not a promise that an item will be auctioned after that many days; consult the current MRC guidance for the applicable rules.

What buying “unclaimed packages” does—and does not—mean
The official route is an auction for merchandise in lots after USPS has handled undeliverable mail under its delivery, return, and recovery processes. It is not an official USPS retail offer for a single sealed package whose unknown contents are guaranteed to be valuable. The listings do not establish a regular auction schedule, particular types of merchandise, profit potential, or home delivery. Inventory, condition, and participation terms depend on the specific lot.
Be cautious of offers using a supposed special USPS link or promising valuable contents. Check that the auction is on the official storefront and read the listing’s terms rather than relying on a seller’s description of it as a USPS mystery package.

What to check before deciding what a lot will cost you
For a personal-finance decision, assess the total cost and logistics, not just the bid amount. Compare the lot’s stated contents and condition with its location, pickup or shipping rules, fees, and deadline. Do not assume shipping is available or that the lot’s contents can be resold for more than your total cost; the listing may not establish either.

Do not treat an overdue package as abandoned or assume it is headed to auction. Check its tracking and follow USPS’s current Missing Mail search and claim guidance. USPS generally uses the return address when it cannot deliver an item; mail with an incorrect address and no return address may be handled by a local post office or sent to the MRC, according to its guidance on undeliverable and misdelivered mail.
