Yes. You may be able to increase your monthly Social Security retirement benefit by correcting missing earnings, continuing covered work that replaces a lower-earning year, delaying an initial claim after full retirement age, or suspending benefits you have already claimed if you meet the age rules. The right option depends on your earnings record, age, and whether payments have started; working more does not automatically mean a larger check.
First, distinguish a higher benefit from a higher payment
A monthly payment can rise for different reasons. This article focuses on ways your underlying retirement benefit may increase through your earnings record or claiming choices. A cost-of-living adjustment is a separate reason a payment may change; the Social Security Administration guidance discussed here does not explain COLA mechanics.

Before acting, review your Social Security earnings record and the benefit estimates associated with your own record. Those are the starting points for deciding whether more work, a later claim, or a suspension could make a difference. An increase is not guaranteed: it depends on your work history and the rules that apply to your age and benefit status.

There are two basic questions: Have you already claimed retirement benefits, and would additional covered earnings improve your record? If you have not claimed, delaying can increase the monthly amount after full retirement age, while additional work may help if it improves the earnings calculation. If you have claimed, continued work may still help, and a limited suspension option may be available after full retirement age.

Your full retirement age (FRA) depends on your birth date. Use your own date of birth and SSA estimates rather than assuming a particular FRA or estimating an increase from a general rule.
Correct missing or inaccurate earnings
Your earnings record is important because covered work can affect the retirement benefit calculation. Start by checking the record for years or earnings that appear missing or incorrect. If you find a discrepancy, contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) to ask how to address that specific record. The available guidance does not establish one correction procedure for every kind of discrepancy, so the steps and evidence needed may depend on the case.
SSA also reviews records for people who continue working while receiving Social Security. The agency says, “Each year we review the records for every working Social Security beneficiary to see if their additional earnings will increase their monthly benefit amount.” (Social Security Administration FAQ, December 22, 2025.) If SSA finds that additional earnings raise the benefit, it calculates the new amount and pays the increase retroactive to January following the year of those earnings once the record has been reviewed.

That annual review is not a promise that every person who works will receive more. It applies when the additional earnings improve the calculation. Keep your own records and check that your earnings appear correctly; do not assume a job change or a higher current salary will by itself produce an increase.
Continue working only if it improves the 35-year calculation
SSA bases a retirement benefit on a worker’s highest 35 years of earnings. If your record has fewer than 35 years, years without earnings can be part of the calculation. If you already have 35 years, a new year generally matters to this route only when it improves the calculation by replacing a lower-earning year.
This is why working longer can increase a benefit for one person but have little or no effect for another. A useful question is not simply “Will I earn more this year?” but “Could this year’s covered earnings replace a lower year in my 35-year record?” Check your record and personal estimates before relying on additional work to raise a future payment.

If you are already receiving benefits, earnings can have a second, separate effect before FRA: the retirement earnings test may temporarily withhold some benefits. The test is based on earnings and age, not on whether your work has improved the 35-year calculation. Both effects can matter at once.

Know the 2026 earnings-test limits if you work before full retirement age
The earnings test can apply when you receive retirement benefits and have earnings before FRA. The 2026 limits below are annual thresholds for that year; they are not permanent amounts.
| Situation in 2026 | Earnings limit | Benefit deduction above the limit |
|---|---|---|
| Under FRA for the entire year | $24,480 | $1 for every $2 over the limit |
| Reaching FRA during 2026; earnings before the FRA month | $65,160 | $1 for every $3 over the limit |
| FRA month and later | Earnings do not reduce benefits | No earnings-test deduction |
These figures and rules are from the Social Security Administration’s 2026 guidance. For someone reaching FRA during 2026, the higher limit applies to earnings before the FRA month; beginning with that month, earnings do not reduce benefits. SSA later recalculates benefits for months withheld because of the earnings test. The test’s thresholds change over time, so do not reuse the 2026 amounts for another year.

The earnings test is not the same as a permanent reduction for claiming early, nor is it the same as the 35-year earnings calculation. If benefits are withheld, SSA’s later recalculation accounts for months withheld under the test. For your decision, consider the year-specific threshold alongside your expected earnings and the date you reach FRA.

If you have not claimed retirement benefits, waiting beyond FRA can raise the monthly benefit through delayed retirement credits. SSA lists a delayed-credit rate of 8% per year for people born in 1943 or later. Credits stop accruing at age 70, so delaying beyond 70 does not earn additional delayed credits.

The 8% figure is a program rate, not a guarantee that every person’s total benefit will rise by exactly 8% in every calendar year. Your FRA depends on your birth date, and the effect of a later start should be evaluated against your own benefit estimate and the months you would wait to claim.

Delaying also means forgoing retirement benefit payments during the delay. The choice therefore involves both the amount of a later monthly benefit and the cash flow you give up while waiting. There is no universally best claiming age: the decision is personal, and a break-even conclusion requires an analysis based on an individual’s circumstances.
If you already claimed, suspension is different from delaying
Voluntary suspension is a possible route only after you have claimed. SSA says, “If you have reached full retirement age, but are not yet age 70, you can ask us to suspend your retirement benefit payments.” (Social Security Administration Benefits Planner.) Eligible suspended months can earn delayed retirement credits.
Suspension is not simply the same decision as waiting to file an initial claim. You have already started benefits, and stopping payments can affect other benefits and billing arrangements. Before requesting it, ask SSA how suspension would affect the payments tied to your record and your own benefit situation.
- Benefits paid on your record for some family members may also be suspended.
- If you receive a benefit on someone else’s record, that benefit may be affected while your own retirement benefit is suspended.
- Medicare Part B premiums cannot be deducted from suspended retirement benefits, so you may need to pay the premium directly.
These effects make it important to confirm the consequences for your household and Medicare billing with SSA before asking for suspension. The age window is specific: you must have reached FRA and be younger than 70.
Compare the trade-offs before choosing
| Option | When it may help | Main trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Correct an earnings record | A covered year or amount is missing or inaccurate. | The correction steps depend on the discrepancy; ask SSA what documentation is needed. |
| Continue covered work | New earnings may replace a lower or zero-earnings year in the highest 35-year calculation. | Before FRA, the earnings test may temporarily withhold benefits; working does not guarantee a higher amount. |
| Delay an initial claim after FRA | You have not claimed and want delayed credits to raise the monthly amount. | You go without retirement payments during the delay; credits stop at 70. |
| Suspend after claiming | You are at least FRA and under 70 and want to earn delayed credits during suspension. | Payments stop, some benefits on or from another person’s record may be affected, and Part B premiums may require direct payment. |
Stopping work and delaying a claim are not mutually exclusive in their benefit effects: a later claim can still earn delayed credits, but stopping work means you will not add earnings that could replace lower years in the 35-year calculation. Weigh the likely earnings-record effect separately from the claiming-date effect.
A practical way to make the decision
- Review your own SSA earnings record. Identify missing or incorrect years and note whether you have fewer than 35 years of earnings or lower years that future work might replace.
- Compare your SSA benefit estimates. Use your date of birth and the estimates for the claiming dates you are considering; do not apply a general FRA or percentage to your case without checking.
- If you work while receiving benefits, check the rule for that calendar year. Determine whether you are under FRA all year or reach FRA during the year, then compare earnings with the applicable threshold.
- If you have already claimed and are considering suspension, verify the household effects first. Confirm benefit impacts and how you will pay Medicare Part B premiums during suspension.
- Ask SSA about any uncertain record or payment issue. The specific correction process, estimate, and consequences depend on your record and circumstances.
Taxes, individual estimates, and all possible spouse or survivor interactions are not resolved by the general rules above. If those issues drive your decision, get guidance specific to your record and household rather than assuming a general increase rule settles them.
