No—SNAP (food stamps or EBT) does not directly provide a free tablet. The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), which once offered eligible households a one-time discount toward a tablet, ended on June 1, 2024. SNAP participation may still help you qualify for Lifeline, a separate program that discounts phone or internet service, but Lifeline does not guarantee a tablet.
As of September 2026, the practical next step is to check Lifeline eligibility and ask participating providers about their current device offers. For a tablet itself, local libraries, schools and community programs may be options, depending on where you live.
What “free tablet with food stamps” means now
SNAP—the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, often called food stamps, EBT or CalFresh—provides food assistance. It does not distribute tablets. SNAP participation can be a qualifying route to Lifeline, but you must apply for communications assistance separately and meet the applicable rules.
The tablet offer commonly associated with SNAP was part of the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), not SNAP or Lifeline. ACP enrollment ended when the program ended, so a page inviting you to apply for an ACP tablet is not a current federal application.

How the ACP tablet discount worked—and when it ended
While the ACP was active, an eligible household could receive a one-time discount of up to $100 toward a laptop, desktop computer or tablet bought through a participating provider. The household generally had to contribute more than $10 and less than $50 toward the device, so the benefit was a discount—not a promise of a completely free tablet. ACP also provided a monthly internet discount of up to $30, or up to $75 for households on qualifying Tribal lands. USAC’s ACP overview records the program’s terms and end date.
The ACP ended on June 1, 2024, after Congress did not provide additional funding. New enrollment is closed, and neither the monthly internet discount nor the one-time device discount remains available through ACP. Lifeline is a separate program and was not automatically ended with ACP. USAC’s June 2024 Tribal newsletter explains the programs’ separate roles.
What Lifeline can offer SNAP households
Lifeline is a federal monthly discount on qualifying phone, internet or bundled service. SNAP is one of the qualifying programs, but approval depends on the application and program rules. The federal benefit is up to $9.25 per month for qualifying internet or bundled service, or up to $5.25 per month for phone-only service. The enhanced benefit for eligible households on qualifying Tribal lands is up to $34.25 per month. These are service discounts, not tablet payments. See the Lifeline FAQ for benefit and eligibility information.
Lifeline is generally limited to one benefit per household. You need to use a participating provider, and the benefit is applied through that provider’s qualifying service. A provider may independently promote a phone, hotspot or tablet, but device availability, plan terms and fees vary by location and provider. A free-phone promotion does not mean a tablet is included.

Follow the site’s instructions to apply through the National Verifier or the current process for your state. You may be asked to document SNAP participation, identity, date of birth or address, and to provide approved identifying information. If you apply based on income, you may also need household or income documentation. An EBT card alone is not guaranteed to satisfy every verification request.
-
After approval, use the official Lifeline provider locator to find participating companies by location and service type. A listing does not guarantee that every company offers Lifeline service in your ZIP code.
-
Ask the provider directly whether it currently offers a free device, discounted tablet, tablet add-on, hotspot or phone plan with tethering. Get the device and service terms in writing before sharing payment details.

If an application is denied or requests more information, follow the official instructions for resolving the issue. Inconsistent personal details, unsuccessful SNAP verification, incomplete documents, an existing household benefit or a wrong state or address can interfere with approval. Do not assume that applying through several providers will fix a verification problem.
How to judge a provider’s tablet offer
A provider promotion is different from a government-issued tablet. “Free” may mean no upfront device charge but a required paid plan; a discounted or refurbished device; or a promotion with shipping, activation or other charges. Before accepting, compare the total cost over 12 months:

A low-cost unlocked tablet used on Wi-Fi may cost less over time than a device promotion tied to a paid plan. A tablet that is technically free upfront can still be a poor value if the plan is expensive, the device is outdated or the contract terms are restrictive.

How to avoid outdated ACP pages and misleading offers
The FCC has warned consumers about websites still advertising ACP enrollment or collecting personal information for the discontinued program. Read the FCC consumer advisory before responding to an ACP-related page.
Be cautious if a site promises every SNAP recipient a government tablet, claims Lifeline guarantees hardware, or asks for card details before identifying the provider and full offer terms. Other warning signs include a hidden monthly charge, pressure tactics, no legal business name, or a claim that ACP is accepting new applications. Start with official Lifeline and USAC pages, then verify any device offer with the provider itself. Never provide sensitive information to a purported ACP enrollment page.
