You can source products from Alibaba and sell them on Amazon, but Alibaba supplies inventory; it does not make a product profitable, compliant, authorized, or eligible for Amazon. For a typical private-label business, the safer sequence is to validate a product, check safety and intellectual-property requirements, test samples, document the order, inspect production, arrange import and delivery, then launch and monitor the listing.
This guide focuses primarily on selling to customers on Amazon.com in the United States. Sellers based elsewhere can use the same workflow, but account verification, tax, banking, import, and product rules depend on the seller’s location and target marketplace.
What does selling on Amazon from Alibaba mean?
Alibaba is a supplier marketplace; Amazon is the sales channel. The seller remains responsible for choosing and verifying the product, meeting marketplace and legal requirements, importing inventory, and managing the business. The most common arrangement is private label: purchase a generic or customizable product, add a brand or improvements, and sell it through a new Amazon listing.
Choose the right sourcing model
| Model | How it works | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Private label | Buy a standard or customizable product and sell it under your brand. | Requires differentiation, quality control, compliant branding, and inventory investment. |
| Custom manufacturing | Provide a design, specification, mold, formula, or technical brief for production. | Offers more control but adds development, testing, intellectual-property, and quality risks. |
| Wholesale or resale | Buy an existing branded product from an authorized source and sell against an existing listing. | Use only a verifiable, authorized supply chain. Marketplace availability alone does not prove authenticity or resale rights. |
| Dropshipping | A supplier ships individual orders to customers. | Not the default low-risk route: packaging, delivery, returns, stock accuracy, and Amazon policy compliance remain concerns. Check current Amazon rules and retain control of the customer experience. |
For fulfillment, sellers generally choose Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), Fulfilled by Merchant (FBM), or a combination. Amazon says FBA can handle picking, packing, shipping, customer service, and returns; eligibility and benefits vary. See Amazon’s Seller Central overview.

Can you sell on Amazon.com if you live outside the United States?
Yes, but selling cross-border does not remove verification, tax, customs, or product obligations. Separate these questions before ordering:
- Seller location: Where the person or business is established, and which identity, address, banking, and tax details Amazon requires.
- Marketplace and customer destination: Amazon.com and US customers in this guide; another marketplace may have different rules.
- Inventory location: Whether goods ship from China or another country, or are stored in the United States.
- Importer of record: The party legally responsible for the import entry and related obligations.
- Tax position: Obligations may involve the seller’s home country, destination country, state, and marketplace arrangements.
Amazon has a specific China-to-US selling guide for sellers based in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Account registration alone does not settle tax, customs, or business-registration questions; seek qualified advice for your circumstances.
Choose a product before contacting suppliers
Start with a product hypothesis, not a low Alibaba quote. A product must have plausible demand, a reason buyers would choose it, manageable risks, and enough margin after all costs.
Validate demand and competition
- Look for sustained buyer demand, not just a short-lived trend or seasonal spike. Consider search intent, marketplace indicators, and seasonality.
- Study competing prices, brand concentration, review strength, listing quality, and sponsored-ad density.
- Read negative reviews and buyer questions for recurring problems: defects, weak materials, poor sizing, missing accessories, difficult assembly, confusing instructions, or damaged packaging.
- Ask whether you can solve a real problem or provide a materially better, safer, clearer, or better-supported product. Simply copying a bestseller is not differentiation.
Assess risk before sourcing
Check product restrictions, category approval, applicable rules, listing requirements, and import requirements before spending on samples or inventory. Amazon’s selling guidance points sellers to product and category requirements. Some categories require approval or a Professional plan, and some products cannot be sold by third-party sellers, according to Amazon’s China-to-US guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTreat supplements and ingestibles, cosmetics, health-claim products, medical devices, children’s products, toys, batteries, electrical equipment, food-contact items, liquids, powders, chemicals, and protective equipment as higher-risk—not automatically prohibited. They may require specific testing, labeling, documentation, or transport arrangements. Avoid products that use another company’s brand, characters, artwork, distinctive design, or patented mechanism unless you have the required rights.
Model the unit economics
Estimate contribution profit per unit before ordering. Amazon’s Revenue Calculator can help compare estimated FBA and seller-fulfilled costs, but it is not a complete profit forecast.
Selling price
− Amazon referral fee
− selling-plan allocation
− FBA or FBM fulfillment cost
− landed product cost
− inbound shipping
− customs, duties, and brokerage
− inspection and testing
− packaging and labeling
− storage
− advertising
− returns and refunds
− software and operating overhead
= contribution profit per unit
Use cautious assumptions for advertising, returns, defective units, storage, freight changes, launch discounts, and currency movement. A low factory price does not compensate for an uneconomic landed cost or weak demand.

Check eligibility, compliance, and intellectual property
Do this before production. Amazon says sellers are responsible for complying with applicable laws and regulations, ensuring products are authorized for sale or resale, and avoiding intellectual-property violations. See its Responsible Sourcing Guidelines.
Identify the product rules that apply
Depending on the product and destination, obligations may include safety testing, labeling and warnings, children’s-product rules, electrical standards, battery transport rules, chemical disclosures, food-contact requirements, cosmetic or ingredient documentation, traceability, responsible-party information, and import records. Amazon’s China-to-US guide directs sellers to review product compliance, safety, listing, tax, regulatory, and shipping requirements.
Distinguish a test report, certificate, declaration of conformity, factory audit, product inspection, laboratory accreditation, and supplier claim. A document is useful only if it applies to the exact product, model, materials, factory, market, and production configuration. A supplier’s generic certificate does not establish that your goods comply or will be accepted by Amazon.
Check rights to the product and its content
Before committing, check relevant trademarks, utility patents, design patents or registered designs, copyrighted artwork and photographs, packaging, logos, characters, and existing brand relationships in the destination market. Amazon’s responsibility guidance covers copyright, patent, trademark, and publicity-right concerns. An Alibaba listing is not proof that a product is authorized, safe, non-infringing, or eligible to sell on Amazon.
Find and compare Alibaba suppliers
Search by product, material, manufacturing process, intended use, customization, packaging, and destination-market requirements. Use “OEM” or “ODM” only when you understand what work you expect the supplier to do. Shortlist several candidates and compare their answers, not just unit prices. Alibaba’s marketplace is a place to find suppliers; its listings do not independently establish product compliance or production quality.

Screen suppliers consistently
- Ask whether the company is a manufacturer or trading company and what products it specializes in.
- Review its experience, stated capacity, export markets, customization capability, sample availability, and quality-control process.
- Assess whether it gives clear, specific answers about materials, dimensions, tolerances, packaging, defects, and production timing.
- Ask whether it will permit independent inspection and provide relevant technical documents and reports.
- Treat platform badges and verification as screening signals only—not guarantees of product safety, authorization, or reliable production.
Ask every candidate the same questions
- Are you the manufacturer or a trading company?
- What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ) for the standard product and for custom branding or packaging?
- What are the product dimensions, net weight, gross weight, and carton dimensions?
- What materials and components are used?
- What are the sample cost and sample lead time?
- What is the production lead time after deposit and sample approval?
- Can you provide a detailed quotation by Incoterm and identify what it includes?
- Which documents and test reports are available, and are they for this exact product and factory?
- What is your policy for defects, replacement, or rework?
- Will you allow an independent inspection before final payment?
- Can you apply the required product labels and carton markings and provide packing data?
- Have you shipped to the target country or Amazon fulfillment centers before?
- What happens if the goods fail inspection?
Put the final specification, delivery requirements, payment milestones, and remedies in a written purchase order or trade contract. Alibaba’s Trade Assurance may apply to eligible transactions; its protection depends on the order, terms, evidence, and program rules. It is not a substitute for inspection or a clear contract.
Order samples and approve a written specification
Samples are the first meaningful quality-control gate. Test the product and the way it will reach a customer, not just whether it looks like the listing photo.

- High quality material : High-quality steel and finished in heat-treated chrome attributes strength, durability and anti-corrosion to this set.
- Comprehensive basic tools : It includes claw hammer, precision screwdrivers, cutting pliers, adjustable wrench, tape measure, dual-head mini ratchet screwdriver, sockets, driver bits and so on.
- Widely application area : 128 Pcs tool set is a superb choice for most small repairs and DIY projects around the house, such as repairing water pipe, outdoor fittings, garden decoration, garage constuction, car overhaul, etc.
- Blow molded storage toolbox : Toolbox makes the hand tool set easy to storage. The compact interior design of the box keeps all components tidily in place even during transportation.
What to check
- Dimensions, weight, materials, finish, color, fit, and tolerances.
- Function, durability, and realistic-use performance.
- Odor, contamination, and any relevant safety characteristics.
- Accessories, instructions, warnings, packaging, and barcode or label placement.
- Packaging protection and the risk of damage in transit.
For custom work, retain an approved “golden sample” and write down its specifications. Document every change; do not accept a substitute material or revised design without written approval. A promotional sample or generic supplier certificate does not prove that mass production will match or comply.
Negotiate and place the production order
Compare total cost and defined responsibilities rather than bargaining only over unit price. Confirm the MOQ, price breaks, tooling or setup costs, production schedule, packaging, labeling, inspection rights, payment milestones, and who pays for rework or replacement if goods fail. Specify which sample and revision production must match.
Keep material commitments inside the signed order documentation and any transaction-protection process you rely on. Do not make undocumented changes through informal messages. The contract should state what constitutes a defect, how inspection works, what happens after a failure, and whether you can hold the final payment pending a remedy.
Inspect the goods before shipment
Amazon receiving is not manufacturing quality control. For a first order, consider an independent pre-shipment inspection against your approved specification before paying the balance. Depending on the product and risk, controls can also include pre-production inspection, during-production checks, or container-loading inspection.
Define the inspection in advance
- Set the sample size and acceptable defect limits, distinguishing critical, major, and minor defects.
- Check function, dimensions, weight, materials, color and finish, accessories, and quantity.
- Verify packaging, product and carton labels, markings, and barcode readability.
- Use appropriate drop, durability, or other tests where relevant to the product.
- Keep the approved sample, specification, inspection report, and production records.
Amazon has discussed testing, inspection, and certification processes for certain categories in its testing and certification forum post. Requirements depend on category and product; a passing inspection does not replace applicable legal testing or Amazon approval.
If the shipment fails
Use the remedy defined in the order: require rework or replacement, negotiate a partial refund, hold the balance, reinspect, or cancel before shipment if the contract permits. Do not ship a failed batch in the hope that customer returns will reveal the problem.

Arrange shipping, customs, and Amazon delivery
Possible routes include supplier to Amazon, supplier through an inspection provider to Amazon, supplier to a third-party logistics provider (3PL) or your warehouse and then Amazon, or supplier to your facility for FBM fulfillment. Amazon says China-based sellers can arrange delivery to US fulfillment centers through an official first-mile provider or a third party and create FBA shipments in Seller Central; see its China-to-US guide.

- Easy-grip, non-slip tool handles
Understand the shipping terms and landed quote
EXW, FOB, CIF, and DDP allocate different transportation, delivery, risk, and customs responsibilities. No one term is best for every shipment. Get a written quote that identifies product and packaging costs, inland transport, export handling, freight, insurance, customs duties, brokerage, destination delivery, and any applicable appointment, receiving, or special-handling charges.
Ask explicitly: Who is the importer of record, and who is legally responsible for the import entry? Do not assume that a “door-to-door” or DDP quote resolves every tax, customs, or product-liability obligation. Confirm the arrangement with a qualified customs broker or trade professional.
Prepare an FBA shipment
- In Seller Central, create the shipment and confirm the assigned fulfillment destination.
- Obtain final carton dimensions, weights, and packing quantities from the supplier.
- Confirm current product preparation, carton, and labeling requirements; apply the required labels and markings.
- Reconcile shipment quantities and make sure the goods, packaging, labels, and listing describe the same product.
- Keep the commercial invoice, packing list, transport documents, inspection records, and import documentation.
- Confirm the carrier or forwarder understands delivery and any required Amazon appointment process before dispatch.
Freight transport does not transfer your responsibility for the product or remove the need for correct shipment data and import arrangements.
Open and verify your Amazon seller account
Amazon’s US registration flow typically requests business and contact details, payment and bank information, tax information, identity verification, and account settings. Its registration guide says identity verification may require a government-issued ID, proof of residential or business address dated within the previous 180 days, and a face-and-ID check or video call. Requirements can depend on the applicant and should be checked during registration.
Compare the US selling plans
Amazon’s US materials displayed these plan amounts as of August 2026: the Individual plan is $0.99 per item sold and the Professional plan is $39.99 per month; both are in addition to applicable selling fees. These figures and plan terms can change, so confirm them on Amazon’s FAQ and registration page before enrolling. They are not the total cost of selling: referral, fulfillment, storage, advertising, returns, and other charges may apply. Choose based on expected volume, required tools or category access, and your economics—not on the plan name alone.
Choose FBA, FBM, or a hybrid approach
| Option | Can suit | Trade-offs to model |
|---|---|---|
| FBA | Compact, standardized products with predictable demand and enough margin. | Fulfillment and storage charges, aged inventory, removal or disposal costs, and stock stranded by a listing or account problem. |
| FBM | Bulky, slow-moving, special-handling products, or sellers with an established warehouse. | You manage shipping operations, customer service, returns, and delivery performance. |
| Hybrid | Sellers who want FBA reach with reserve inventory elsewhere. | A 3PL or seller facility adds handling and storage cost; inventory must be coordinated across locations. |
For a cautious first test, one option is to import a modest order, send only part to FBA, and retain reserve stock with a 3PL or at your facility. That can provide a contingency for demand changes or fulfillment issues, but only if the additional storage and handling cost makes sense.

Prepare the brand, product identifier, packaging, instructions, and customer support details before mass production. Amazon products generally use identifiers such as GTINs, but the applicable identifier or exemption route depends on the product and listing circumstances; see its registration guide. A logo alone does not establish eligibility for Brand Registry. Check Amazon’s current Brand Registry requirements if you want brand tools.

Listing preparation checklist
- Write an accurate title, key features, and description.
- Use images that represent the product customers will receive.
- Provide correct dimensions, variations, contents, and product identifiers.
- Include applicable safety information, warnings, instructions, and supported claims.
- Check category and product eligibility and submit required documentation.
Avoid unsupported superlatives, medical claims, guaranteed outcomes, competitor trademarks in keyword fields, manipulative review requests, and claims of certification that the documentation does not support. Amazon describes Seller Central tools for listing, inventory, advertising, analytics, and performance monitoring at its seller tools page.
Launch, advertise, and monitor performance
Launch only when the listing is accurate, inventory is available, and the product and documents are in order. Set a price that reflects the full cost model. Sponsored advertising or promotions can test demand, but they cannot repair poor quality, weak differentiation, or an unworkable margin.
Track the signals that affect your next decision
- Sessions, conversion rate, and organic-ranking movement.
- Advertising click-through and conversion rates, advertising cost of sales, and total advertising cost of sales.
- Refunds, return reasons, defect patterns, and customer questions.
- Contribution margin, inventory days of supply, and account-health notices.
Follow Amazon’s review policies; do not offer incentives or otherwise manipulate reviews. Use early customer and return data to decide whether to improve the product, listing, price, advertising, or supplier relationship before scaling.
Reorder only when the data supports it
The first order is a controlled market and supplier test. Reordering should account for actual sales, production variability, freight transit, Amazon receiving time, seasonality, advertising trends, return and defect rates, storage, and available cash.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Reorder point = average daily sales × total replenishment lead time + safety stock
Use your own sales and lead-time data for the formula; it is not a universal inventory target. Keep enough working capital for replenishment and unexpected costs, and consider qualifying a second supplier to reduce dependence on one source.
What costs should you budget for?
There is no reliable universal startup-cost figure for this model: product, order size, freight, compliance, and launch choices vary. Build a budget that includes each applicable item before committing:
- Samples and sample shipping.
- Product order, tooling, branding, and packaging.
- Inspection, laboratory testing, and compliance documentation.
- Freight, insurance, customs duties, brokerage, and destination delivery.
- Amazon plan and selling fees, fulfillment, and storage.
- Advertising, promotions, returns, refunds, defects, and replacement stock.
- Working capital for delays and reorders.
Use Amazon’s Revenue Calculator for the Amazon fulfillment comparison, then add costs it does not capture for your specific shipment and operation.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes that can turn a promising product into a loss
- Choosing on unit price alone: Freight, defects, testing, storage, advertising, returns, and customs can erase the apparent saving.
- Buying branded goods without authorization: This can lead to authenticity complaints, listing removal, intellectual-property claims, or account risk.
- Trusting a supplier certificate without checking it: It may relate to another product, model, factory, or market.
- Sending inventory to FBA without inspection: Amazon receiving does not detect every production defect; customer returns and stranded stock can become costly.
- Copying a competitor: Product design, packaging, images, wording, or distinctive features can create rights and policy exposure.
- Ignoring dimensions and packaging: Small changes can affect freight, FBA size tier, storage, fulfillment costs, carton count, and damage rates.
- Ordering more than the business can support: Inventory ties up cash that may be needed for advertising, defects, or replenishment.
- Accepting an opaque shipping quote: “Door to door” does not explain who clears customs, pays duties, or is importer of record.
- Buying inventory before checking eligibility: Category, product, brand, or documentation requirements can delay or prevent a listing.
Go/no-go checklist before placing the order
- Is the product eligible for the target Amazon marketplace, and do you understand its legal and safety requirements?
- Have you checked the relevant intellectual-property position and, for branded resale, verified authorization?
- Have you tested a sample and documented the final specification?
- Do the documents apply to the exact product, model, factory, and destination market?
- Does the margin remain acceptable after landed cost, Amazon fees, advertising, storage, returns, and defects?
- Are the order, payment terms, inspection rights, and remedies written down?
- Do packaging, labels, listing, and shipment data match?
- Do you know who is importer of record and who handles customs formalities?
- Can you afford to hold the inventory and manage a failed inspection, delay, or slow launch?
