Re:

Can You Get a Free Laptop with EBT Benefits? Current U.S. Options

SNAP does not currently include a free-laptop benefit. Lifeline may reduce phone or internet costs, while local libraries, schools, and nonprofits may offer device help with varying eligibility and availability.

No: SNAP or an EBT card does not currently provide a free laptop benefit. SNAP participation may help you qualify for Lifeline, but Lifeline discounts phone or internet service—not a computer. The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), which once offered a limited discount toward a device, ended on June 1, 2024.

This is a U.S.-focused guide current to October 4, 2026. Local nonprofits and public programs may offer low-cost or donated computers, but availability and eligibility vary; confirm the details directly before relying on an offer.

Why do people associate EBT with a free laptop?

The confusion comes largely from the federal Affordable Connectivity Program. While it operated, the ACP offered eligible households a one-time discount of up to $100 toward a connected device such as a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet. The household had to contribute more than $10 and less than $50, so even then it was not a free laptop. The Congressional Research Service reports that the program ended on June 1, 2024, after its funding was exhausted; it is not open for new applications. Congressional Research Service: Affordable Connectivity Program

The CRS reported that more than 23 million households received ACP support at one time and that Congress had provided a one-time appropriation of $14.2 billion. Those figures describe the former program, not current laptop assistance.

What does Lifeline provide to SNAP households?

SNAP participation can be one way to qualify for the federal Lifeline program, subject to program rules. Lifeline is a monthly discount on communications service, not a laptop grant. USAC says the standard benefit can be up to $9.25 per month for phone, internet, or bundled service, or up to $5.25 per month for phone service. Enhanced support may be available to eligible residents of Tribal lands. The amount applied and available services depend on the participating provider and circumstances. USAC Lifeline Support

Use USAC’s official qualification and application information to check eligibility and locate a participating provider. Confirm what service the provider offers, any remaining monthly charge, and whether the benefit can be applied to your existing service before enrolling.

Where to look for computer assistance

Since there is no current nationwide SNAP laptop benefit, check programs serving your area. Assistance may be limited to particular groups, locations, or available stock; do not assume an organization provides free devices simply because it appears in a directory.

  • Public libraries: Ask about loaner laptops, technology lending, computer labs, or referrals to local device programs.
  • Schools and colleges: If you or someone in your household is a student, ask the school’s student-support, technology, or financial-aid office about device loans or assistance.
  • Workforce offices and community action agencies: Ask whether local employment or anti-poverty programs provide computers for training, job searches, or other qualifying needs.
  • Nonprofit refurbishers: Check whether a reputable computer refurbisher serves your ZIP code and what its current prices, eligibility rules, inventory, and warranty terms are.
  • State and local government directories: Search official state, county, or city resources for computer access programs and verify any listing with the organization itself.

For example, a New Jersey government resource lists PCs for People as an option for affordable computers, repair, and low-cost internet for people who meet its eligibility criteria. That listing does not establish nationwide service or guarantee current inventory. People outside New Jersey should check local directories and confirm coverage and terms directly.

How to check an assistance offer before applying

  1. Confirm the service area. Ask whether the program serves your city or ZIP code and whether applications are open.
  2. Ask about eligibility and proof. Find out which documents are accepted, such as proof of income, program participation, school enrollment, or other criteria. Share sensitive documents only through a channel you have verified with the organization.
  3. Get the full cost in writing. Check for an upfront payment, shipping or repair fees, required service purchases, and recurring charges. Clarify whether the device is free, discounted, or a loan.
  4. Check the computer’s condition and suitability. Ask whether it is new or refurbished, what operating system and specifications it has, and whether it can run the applications you need for school, work, or telehealth.
  5. Review the warranty and return terms. Confirm how long coverage lasts, what it includes, and what happens if the computer arrives damaged or fails.
  6. Verify the organization independently. Use contact details from its official website or a government directory, and be wary of claims that an EBT number alone guarantees a free laptop.

If you need to buy a laptop

If assistance is unavailable, compare affordable computers as purchases rather than government benefits. Consider the total price, including tax, delivery, accessories, and any software or service you actually need. For refurbished devices, weigh condition and warranty against the lower upfront cost; check return terms and ensure the specifications fit your intended tasks. Current models and prices vary, so verify them with the seller before buying.
