Re:

Can You Deduct Commuting Miles or Only Business Miles?

Home-to-work driving is generally commuting, not deductible business mileage. Temporary assignments, travel between workplaces and a qualifying home office can change the analysis.

For U.S. federal tax purposes, driving from home to your regular workplace is generally personal commuting—not deductible business travel. Some trips can qualify, including travel between work locations, certain trips to temporary job sites, and travel from a home that qualifies as your principal place of business. The route, work-location pattern, assignment expectations and tax year matter; a drive being work-related does not by itself make it deductible.

How to tell commuting from business travel

Start with the purpose and endpoints of each trip, not the number of miles or whether you thought about work on the way. The IRS distinguishes ordinary transportation between home and a regular place of business from transportation undertaken between work locations or under specific temporary-work or qualifying-home-office rules.

IRS Publication 463 (2025), chapter 4, puts the general rule this way: “Daily transportation expenses you incur while traveling from home to one or more regular places of business are generally nondeductible commuting expenses.” A long drive remains a commute under that rule. So do trips during which you make business calls or drive a car displaying business advertising. Those details do not change the trip’s classification.

Trip pattern General federal tax treatment What changes the analysis
Home to or from a regular workplace Personal commuting; generally nondeductible Potential exceptions include qualifying temporary-work travel or a qualifying principal-place-of-business home office.
Home to a temporary work location May qualify as business transportation Depends on whether you have another regular work location, whether the site is in your ordinary metropolitan work area, and whether the assignment is temporary.
One workplace to another during the workday Generally business transportation The trip must be between work locations in the course of business; a personal detour can limit the deductible amount.
Home to a second job on a day off from the main job Generally personal commuting Having another employer or job does not by itself make the trip deductible.
Qualifying home office to another work location in the same business May qualify as business transportation The home must meet the principal-place-of-business rules; remote work alone is not enough.

When a temporary work site can qualify

A temporary location is not automatically deductible just because you do not work there every day. The IRS treatment depends on your work pattern and the assignment’s expected duration.

You have a regular work location elsewhere

If you have at least one regular work location away from home, round-trip travel from home to a temporary work location in the same trade or business may be deductible, regardless of the distance. The site must genuinely be temporary, rather than another regular workplace described as temporary.

You have no regular work location

If you ordinarily work in a metropolitan area but do not have a regular work location, daily travel from home to temporary sites inside that metropolitan area is generally treated as commuting. Travel to a temporary site outside the metropolitan area where you ordinarily work may qualify. The metropolitan-area distinction matters: the fact that a site is a different address or a short-term assignment does not settle the question.

Apply the one-year expectation test as circumstances change

An assignment is generally temporary if it is realistically expected to last one year or less and actually does so, unless the facts and circumstances point otherwise. The expectation is not frozen on the first day. If an assignment initially expected to last a year or less later becomes realistically expected to last more than a year, it is treated as temporary only until that expectation changes. IRS Topic No. 511 says travel expenses at the location are not deductible after you expect the assignment to last more than one year.

For example, a short assignment may qualify at first, but an extension can change the treatment from the date your realistic expectation changes. Keep the dates and circumstances behind that change, such as when an extension was proposed or confirmed, rather than relying only on the assignment’s original end date.

Travel between jobs and other work locations

Transportation between two workplaces during the same day can generally be deductible business travel, whether the locations are for the same employer or different employers. This is different from driving from home to one of those jobs: home-to-work travel remains commuting unless an exception applies.

If a personal reason keeps you from traveling directly between work locations, the deductible amount is capped at the cost of going directly from one workplace to the other. The personal portion does not become business travel simply because the trip also connects two jobs.

The distinction also applies to part-time work. If you go from home to a second job on a day when you are off from your main job, that home-to-work trip is generally commuting. The second job does not turn the trip into travel between workplaces.

When a home office changes the answer

A home-to-work trip may qualify when your home is your principal place of business under the IRS home-office rules and the other work location is in the same trade or business. Under that exception, transportation between the home and another location in the business may be deductible whether the other location is temporary or permanent, and regardless of distance.

Working remotely some days, doing paperwork at home, or having no employer-provided office does not by itself establish that the home is a principal place of business. The home must meet the applicable home-office requirements. IRS Publication 587 explains how to determine whether a home qualifies. Do not use the home-office exception unless your facts satisfy those rules.

What if you have no regular office or qualifying home office?

The IRS describes a situation in which a person has no regular office and no qualifying home office. In its example, the first business contact inside the metropolitan area is treated as the office. Travel from home to the first contact and from the last contact back home is commuting; travel from one client to another may be deductible business transportation.

This example shows why a day of client visits cannot be classified as one block of deductible driving. Break the day into individual legs: home to the first work contact, contact to contact, and final contact to home. The middle legs may have a different treatment from the legs at the beginning and end. Whether the example fits your situation depends on your actual work arrangement and locations.

How the mileage rate works—and what it does not do

The IRS standard mileage rate for business use in tax year 2025 was 70 cents per mile. That year-specific rate is a method for calculating costs for eligible business miles; it does not make personal commuting deductible. First determine which trips qualify, then apply the method and rules that are appropriate for your circumstances and tax year.

Do not treat the 2025 figure as a rate for another year. The rate can change, and the information here does not establish a 2026 rate. Check the applicable IRS guidance for the tax year you are filing.

Keep records that show the trip’s business purpose

A mileage log is a practical way to support eligible travel, but it cannot change a commute into business travel. Record enough detail to identify each trip and explain why it qualifies. A useful log includes:

  • The date of the trip.
  • Starting point and destination.
  • Business purpose and the work location involved.
  • Miles driven for that trip.
  • For temporary assignments, the expected duration and any date when that expectation changed.

Keep records that support the work-location facts too, such as which site was regular, which was temporary, and whether a home office met the principal-place-of-business test. Publication 463 (2025) covers substantiation and car expenses. The records should allow you to explain how you classified each leg, not just report a total number of miles.

Reimbursements and worker status can affect what you claim

The outcome can depend on whether you are an employee or self-employed, the tax year, and how expense reimbursements are handled. IRS Publication 463 (2025) and the Instructions for Form 2106 (2025) discuss relevant car-expense and reporting rules; individual eligibility should not be assumed from the mileage classification alone.

The IRS warns that an employee who is entitled to reimbursement but does not claim it cannot claim a deduction for the expenses to which that unclaimed reimbursement applies. Check your employer’s reimbursement policy and the rules for the relevant filing year before claiming an expense. A trip may be business transportation in character without necessarily producing a deductible amount on a particular taxpayer’s return.

A practical checklist for classifying a trip

  1. Identify each leg. Separate home-to-work, work-to-work, and work-to-home travel instead of totaling all driving done in a workday.
  2. Ask whether either endpoint is home. If so, determine whether the other endpoint is a regular workplace, a temporary site, or another work location in the same business.
  3. Identify your regular work locations. If you have a regular work location away from home, temporary-site travel may be treated differently than it would be for someone with no regular location.
  4. For temporary sites, check the metropolitan-area rule. If you lack a regular work location, consider whether the temporary site is inside or outside the metropolitan area where you ordinarily work.
  5. Check assignment expectations. Determine whether the assignment was realistically expected to last one year or less, and whether that expectation later changed.
  6. Test any home-office exception. Confirm that the home qualifies as your principal place of business and that the other location is in the same trade or business.
  7. Review records and reimbursements. Document the miles and business purpose, then check the filing-year rules and any reimbursement you were entitled to receive.

IRS Publication 463 (2025) and Topic No. 511 provide the governing examples and explanations for these distinctions. IRS Instructions for Form 2106 (2025) make the mileage point explicit: “Don’t include commuting miles on this line; commuting miles aren’t considered business miles.”
