In the United States, Social Security offers two different options: you may be able to withdraw your retirement application, or—if you are at least at full retirement age and under 70—ask to suspend future payments. Withdrawal can require repayment and written consent from people affected by the change; suspension pauses payments prospectively but has consequences for family benefits and Medicare. Which option is available depends on your record, dates, and household circumstances.
First decide whether you mean undoing the claim or pausing payments
Social Security treats withdrawing an application and suspending benefit payments as separate procedures. Withdrawal, if approved, treats the application as though it had not been filed. Suspension leaves the claim in place and stops payments going forward. The difference matters: withdrawal has a short deadline and may require substantial repayment, while suspension is available only within a particular age range and does not erase the original claim.

Neither option is a general right to reverse any claim at any time. The Social Security Administration (SSA) must apply the rules to your dates, payments, and family record. Read the rules below, then ask SSA to confirm which procedure, if any, applies to you.

Can you withdraw a retirement application?
Usually, you may request withdrawal only if your written request is filed within 12 months of the first month you were entitled to retirement benefits. The time limit is measured from the first month of entitlement, not simply from the date the first check arrived. You may have only one approved withdrawal of a retirement application. The SSA’s withdrawal FAQ and the regulation at 20 CFR § 404.640 describe the requirements.

A written request is required. If SSA has already decided that you are entitled to benefits, you must repay—or satisfy SSA that you will repay—the benefits already paid. Other people whose entitlement would become incorrect because of the withdrawal must consent in writing. These requirements can make withdrawal more complicated than returning the retirement checks deposited in your bank account.
That means it is important to distinguish when you filed from when entitlement began. If you are near the end of the 12-month period, ask SSA to confirm the first entitlement month and the filing deadline for your case rather than estimating from the date a payment reached you. The one-withdrawal limit also matters: this is not an option to use repeatedly whenever circumstances change.
If SSA approves the request, the application is treated as if it had never been filed, and you may apply again later. A later application may not include the same retroactive period as the withdrawn one; do not assume that the original filing date or payment period will be preserved. The SSA-521 withdrawal form warns that withdrawal removes rights attached to the withdrawn application and that a new determination requires a later application.

Do not estimate repayment by adding up only the net checks you received. SSA says the amount may include benefits paid to family members, Medicare premiums withheld from benefits, taxes withheld, garnishments, and certain Medicare Part A expenses paid during the relevant period. Its operating instructions also identify Medicare hospital insurance expenses, withheld supplemental medical insurance premiums, and voluntary tax withholding as repayment considerations. The amount depends on the individual case; SSA must calculate it.

In other words, the money involved may not match what you personally received in your bank account. For example, some benefits may have gone to eligible family members, while other amounts may have been withheld or applied to Medicare costs. Those categories are reasons to request an individualized accounting, not a formula for calculating what you owe. The SSA’s application-cancellation guidance and operating instructions describe possible repayment considerations.
Before requesting withdrawal, ask SSA for a case-specific accounting and find out whose written consent is required. The SSA’s application-cancellation guidance explains the repayment examples. Because affected family members’ entitlements can be part of the calculation, review both the payment history and the household record with SSA before treating withdrawal as a simple return of your checks.
Can you suspend payments instead?
If you have reached full retirement age but are younger than 70, you can ask SSA to suspend retirement payments voluntarily. The underlying claim remains in place; suspension is not withdrawal. For eligible suspended months, you can earn delayed retirement credits, which can increase the benefit payable when payments resume. SSA describes the potential increase as “up to 8% per year, plus inflation.” That is a general description, not an individualized estimate or a guarantee that suspension will improve your lifetime finances.
Suspension may be worth asking about if you are past full retirement age and want to stop checks for a period rather than erase the claim. But the potential increase is only one consideration: compare the benefit you would forgo during the suspension with the amount payable afterward, and consider household benefits and Medicare premiums as well. SSA’s general percentage should not be treated as a personalized forecast of how much your own monthly benefit will rise or as a promise about total lifetime income.

Suspension is prospective. It generally begins no earlier than the month after you request it, and SSA’s detailed rules include further limits related to full retirement age and the month of entitlement. You can ask SSA to restart payments, and payments restart automatically at age 70 if they have not restarted sooner. SSA says: “If you change your mind and want the payments to start before age 70, just tell us when you want your benefits reinstated.” See SSA’s suspension rules and its summary of pausing a retirement benefit.
How suspension affects your household and Medicare
Suspension can interrupt benefits beyond your own retirement check. Family members generally cannot receive benefits on your record while your retirement benefit is suspended, although divorced spouses may continue to receive benefits. While suspended, you also cannot receive benefits on someone else’s record. If anyone in your family relies on benefits tied to your record, find out how suspension would affect their payments before submitting a request.
You remain responsible for Medicare Part B premiums. If SSA cannot deduct them from a suspended retirement payment, you must pay them directly. SSA warns that late payment can put Part B coverage at risk. Ask SSA how direct billing will work and when a premium is due, especially if you are accustomed to having it deducted from your monthly check. Include any family benefits and your Medicare payment arrangements in the decision, not just the possible increase to your own future check.

Withdrawal and suspension compared
| Decision point | Withdraw the application | Suspend payments |
|---|---|---|
| What changes | If SSA approves it, the application is treated as though it had not been filed. | Payments stop prospectively; the underlying claim remains in place. |
| When available | Written request within 12 months of the first month of entitlement; only one approved retirement withdrawal. | After reaching full retirement age and before age 70. |
| Repayment | Repayment of benefits and related amounts may be required; affected people may need to consent in writing. | The withdrawal repayment rule does not apply simply because future checks are suspended. |
| How payments can resume | Apply again later; a later application may not include the same retroactive period. | Payments can restart on request or automatically at age 70. |
| Household and Medicare effects | Repayment may include family benefits and certain Medicare-related amounts. | Most benefits on the worker’s record stop during suspension, and Part B premiums must be paid directly. |
The key practical contrast is that withdrawal reaches back to the application and can involve repayment for amounts already paid, while suspension affects future payments and leaves the claim intact. Neither procedure guarantees the same payment history later: withdrawal requires a new application, and suspension only earns credits for eligible suspended months.

This comparison describes SSA procedures, not which choice is financially better. Your age, entitlement month, payment history, other people’s benefits, Medicare status, and the repayment figure can change the practical answer.
How to ask SSA about withdrawal
- Check your dates and payment history. Identify your first month of entitlement, not just the date you filed or received a first deposit. Review any payments made to you or family members and any Medicare-related amounts that may be involved.
- Ask SSA for the repayment and consent requirements for your record. Do this before deciding that withdrawal is affordable or that no other beneficiary is affected. The amount is case-specific.
- Complete Form SSA-521. SSA says you can complete the form through a Social Security account or download it and mail it to your local Social Security office. The form is titled “Request for Withdrawal of Application.”
- Confirm current submission instructions and keep a copy. Online options and office procedures can change. Check SSA’s cancellation page or benefit-management directory for current routes before sending documents.
- Wait for SSA’s decision before treating the claim as withdrawn. Withdrawal is subject to approval and its repayment and consent requirements. Do not assume that filing the form alone cancels payments or guarantees a later application will cover the same months.
SSA lists telephone support at 1-800-772-1213 and TTY at 1-800-325-0778. Confirm current contact and submission details with SSA when you are ready to act. If you contact SSA by phone, have your entitlement month and payment history available so you can ask about the specific rule and amount that apply to your record.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to request suspension
- Confirm that you are at least at full retirement age and under 70. Suspension to earn delayed retirement credits is not the same option as withdrawing an application and is not available at every age.
- Review effects on anyone receiving benefits on your record. Ask which household benefits would stop and whether the divorced-spouse exception applies in your situation.
- Arrange payment of Medicare Part B premiums. If deductions from your retirement benefit stop, make sure you know how to pay the premiums directly and when they are due.
- Contact SSA to request suspension and confirm its effective month. Because suspension is prospective, ask SSA how the request date and your entitlement history affect the first month without payment.
- Plan how payments will restart. You may ask for benefits to resume earlier; otherwise, they restart automatically at age 70.
There is no reason to treat a suspension request as a way to undo months already paid: it does not cancel the original application. Conversely, someone who is outside the withdrawal window should not assume that suspension is available as a substitute; SSA limits the delayed-credit suspension option to people who have reached full retirement age and are younger than 70.
Questions to settle before choosing
Withdrawal can reset the application, but it may involve repayment of more than your own net checks and may require other people’s consent. Suspension avoids undoing the claim, but it is available only from full retirement age until before 70 and can affect household income and Medicare administration. Before acting, get answers to these case-specific questions from SSA:

- What is my first month of entitlement, and am I still within the 12-month withdrawal period?
- Has SSA made an entitlement decision, and what repayment amount or repayment assurance would it require?
- Which family members’ benefits or other entitlements would be affected, and whose written consent is needed?
- If I withdraw and reapply later, what payment months or retroactive period would the new application cover?
- If I suspend, when could the suspension begin, what happens to benefits on my record, and how will I pay Part B premiums?
- What would my benefit be under each available path, based on my record and the months involved?
For the official filing rules governing retirement and spouse benefits, see SSA’s retirement claiming guidance. The right next step is to have SSA apply the relevant rule to your actual record rather than infer eligibility or a repayment amount from general examples.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I withdraw my Social Security retirement claim after 12 months?
SSA generally allows a retirement application withdrawal only when the written request is filed within 12 months of the first month of entitlement, and only one retirement withdrawal may be approved. If you are outside that period, ask SSA whether another option—such as prospective suspension, if you are at full retirement age and under 70—fits your situation.
Do I have to repay Social Security benefits if I withdraw my application?
If SSA has decided you are entitled to benefits, withdrawal requires repayment or assurance that you will repay amounts already paid. The accounting may include benefits paid to family members, withheld Medicare premiums, taxes, garnishments, and certain Medicare Part A expenses. SSA must determine the amount for your case.
Will my spouse or family keep receiving benefits if I suspend my retirement payments?
Family members generally cannot receive benefits on your record while your retirement payments are suspended, although divorced spouses may continue to receive benefits. You also cannot receive benefits on someone else’s record while suspended. Ask SSA how the rules apply to each person in your household.
Do Social Security payments restart automatically after suspension?
Payments resume automatically at age 70 if they have not restarted sooner. You can also ask SSA to reinstate payments before then. Suspension generally begins no earlier than the month after you request it.
Will Medicare Part B premiums still be deducted while my benefits are suspended?
If there is no retirement payment from which to deduct Part B premiums, you remain responsible for paying them directly. SSA warns that late payment can put Part B coverage at risk, so confirm the billing method and due dates before suspending benefits.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: You may be able to change course, but withdrawal and suspension are different choices. Withdrawal is generally limited to the first 12 months of entitlement and can require repayment and written consent; suspension is prospective and available from full retirement age until before 70, with effects on family benefits and Medicare. Have SSA review your dates, payments, and household record before acting.
