Yes. You can request a different federal student loan repayment plan at any time, but the change is not immediate: your loan servicer must process your request and set the final payment terms. Which plans you can choose depends on your loan type and disbursement dates. Start by checking your loans on StudentAid.gov, compare eligible options with the official calculator, and follow the application or servicer instructions for the plan you want.
How to change your federal student loan repayment plan
- Check your loan details. Sign in to StudentAid.gov and review each loan’s type, disbursement date, current repayment plan, and servicer. These details affect which plans are available. If you have several loans, look at the information for each one: differences in loan type or disbursement date can mean that options are not identical across your balance.
- Compare the options shown for your loans. Use the Repayment Calculator to compare estimated monthly payments and total repayment costs. Treat the results as estimates; your servicer sets final terms after processing your application. The calculator is a way to narrow down choices, not a promise that the displayed payment will be your final bill.
- Submit the request through the right channel. To choose an income-driven repayment (IDR) plan, use the online IDR application. For another eligible plan, contact your servicer about changing plans. If you have loans handled by more than one servicer and apply manually, send a separate request to each servicer. Do not assume that a request to one company automatically changes plans for loans held elsewhere.
- Save the confirmation and monitor messages. Keep a copy of the request and confirmation. Your servicer may ask for income information or other documents before completing the change. Respond to follow-up requests and check the servicer’s messages for the processed terms and payment amount.
Federal Student Aid confirms that borrowers can request a different plan at any time. That means you may request a change after enrolling; it does not guarantee that every plan will be available for every loan or that the new payment starts immediately. The request still has to be processed, and your servicer communicates the final terms. Federal Student Aid’s repayment-plan guidance and your servicer’s response are the practical checks for your situation.

If you are asking, “Can I switch my student loan repayment plan?” the key distinction is between requesting a switch and having the switch processed. Do not treat the calculator result or the act of submitting an application as confirmation of a new payment amount. Wait for the servicer’s communication, and use any personalized deadline in a notice if one applies to your situation.

Which repayment plans can you switch to?
There is no single menu that applies to every federal borrower. Eligibility depends on the federal loan type and when it was disbursed. Current Federal Student Aid guidance reflects major 2026 program changes, including the Tiered Standard Plan and the Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP). Some existing plan options apply only to loans disbursed before July 1, 2026. Do not assume that a plan name you have seen elsewhere is available for your loans.

The July 1, 2026 cutoff matters because plan eligibility can differ based on a loan’s first disbursement date. A borrower’s overall account may contain loans with different dates and types, so a plan that appears relevant to one loan is not automatically an option for every loan. Confirm what is available for the specific loans you want to change rather than relying on a general plan list or another borrower’s experience.
Use the plan options displayed for your account in the official calculator or application, then confirm details with your servicer. If your loans have different types or dates, check eligibility loan by loan rather than assuming one answer covers the full balance. The servicer processes your request and communicates the final terms. If the option you expected is not shown, contact the servicer or consult current Federal Student Aid guidance instead of assuming the plan is available or that an application has gone through.
How to compare plans before choosing
A smaller bill this month is not necessarily the least expensive choice overall. Compare the dimensions that affect both your cash flow and your longer-term repayment goal:
Recommended Free Tools
- Eligibility: Confirm that the plan accepts your loan types and disbursement dates.
- Monthly payment: Check whether the estimated amount is manageable alongside your other expenses.
- Total estimated repayment and duration: A lower payment or longer repayment period can mean more interest paid over time.
- Income reporting: IDR payments are based on income and family size or number of dependents. IDR borrowers generally must recertify annually.
- Forgiveness goal: If you are pursuing forgiveness, verify how the proposed plan affects your eligibility and progress before changing plans.
- Processing and effective terms: The calculator is for comparison, not a binding offer. The servicer determines final payment terms after reviewing the application.
The StudentAid.gov Repayment Calculator supports comparisons of estimated payments and total cost. Use its results to narrow your choice, then rely on the servicer’s processed terms for the actual payment amount and plan details. Federal Student Aid notes that the final terms, including the monthly payment, are set by the servicer after it processes your information.
When weighing a switch, consider the tradeoff between the payment you can manage now and the estimated amount you may repay over time. A lower monthly payment can ease the current bill, but if it comes with a longer repayment period, the total interest may be higher. Compare the estimated total as well as the monthly amount instead of choosing on the monthly figure alone. The calculator can help you make that comparison, but it cannot replace the servicer’s final terms.

If forgiveness is part of your plan, treat it as a separate comparison question rather than assuming that a lower payment automatically advances your goal. Check how a proposed plan affects your eligibility and progress, but the right answer depends on your circumstances. Confirm that point through official plan information or with your servicer before making the change.
IDR also involves an ongoing obligation: payments are based on income and family size or number of dependents, and borrowers generally need to recertify each year. Account for that requirement when comparing it with other eligible plans. A plan change is not only a decision about the next bill; it may also mean providing income information now and revisiting it through annual recertification.
If you are enrolled in SAVE, act on your servicer’s notice
Federal Student Aid says a court order ended the SAVE plan in March 2026. Borrowers enrolled in SAVE are being contacted by servicers in groups and need to follow the deadline in their own servicer notice. The official guidance generally gives a borrower 90 days after receiving that notice to choose another eligible plan.
If you do not choose a plan by that deadline, the servicer issues a final 30-day notice. If you still do not act by the deadline in that final notice, the servicer will automatically place you in a fixed-payment plan. The dates on your personal notice control: an email from Federal Student Aid does not start the 90-day period. Check your servicer inbox and follow the instructions and deadline in the notice you receive.
Because servicers are contacting borrowers in groups, do not calculate your own deadline from a general announcement or another person’s notice. The starting point is your individual servicer notice. Read it for the date by which you must select another eligible plan, and keep track of any later final notice and its separate deadline. If you receive a notice, treat it as time-sensitive even if you have not yet decided which plan to choose.

If you miss the initial selection deadline, the next step described by Federal Student Aid is a final 30-day notice; missing that final deadline leads to automatic placement in a fixed-payment plan. Do not assume that silence keeps you in SAVE or gives you an indefinite extension. Contact your servicer promptly if you are unsure what the notice requires or which options are available to you.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFederal Student Aid’s current guidance also says that ICR and PAYE are scheduled to end no later than July 1, 2028. Because plan availability and transition requirements can change, consult the current Federal Student Aid SAVE court-actions information and your servicer’s notice before choosing.
What can delay or complicate a plan change?
- Your loan may not qualify for the plan you want. Loan type and first disbursement date determine eligibility; check the options associated with your own loans.
- Your application may need more information. An IDR request uses income information, and the servicer may contact you for documentation or follow-up.
- You may need to contact multiple servicers. For a manual application covering loans at several servicers, submit a separate request to each one.
- The calculator amount may differ from the final bill. The calculator provides estimates; the servicer establishes final terms after processing.
- A SAVE transition deadline may be approaching. Use the date in your individual servicer notice, not a general email date, and respond before the final notice deadline.
For general questions about your account or a non-IDR plan change, contact the servicer listed for the affected loan. For an IDR plan, begin with the official online application and respond promptly to any servicer request. If you have more than one servicer and are submitting manually, make sure each relevant servicer receives its own request.
Keep your own record of what you submitted and when, along with any confirmation or notice. That makes it easier to follow up if the servicer asks for documentation or if you need to check the status of a request. No universal processing time is specified, so avoid assuming that a change will be complete by a particular date; ask your servicer about your application’s status and final terms.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does changing plans affect what you pay?
It can. The chosen plan can change the required monthly payment and repayment duration. In particular, lower monthly payments or a longer repayment period may increase the interest paid over time. Compare both the near-term payment and estimated total cost, and consider any forgiveness objective before submitting a request.

There is no universal best plan: the right choice depends on eligibility, affordability, total repayment, and your goals. The official calculator helps you compare estimates, while your servicer’s processed decision provides the final payment terms. If you are balancing a more manageable monthly bill against potential added interest, make that tradeoff explicit before you apply.

Do I need to provide income information or recertify for an IDR plan?
IDR payments are based on income and family size or number of dependents. Borrowers generally must recertify annually, and a servicer may request income information or other documentation while processing an application.
What should I do if I am enrolled in SAVE?
Follow the deadline in your individual servicer notice. Federal Student Aid says borrowers generally have 90 days after receiving that notice to choose another eligible plan. If no plan is selected, the servicer issues a final 30-day notice; missing that final deadline leads to automatic placement in a fixed-payment plan. An FSA email does not start the 90-day clock.
Could switching to a lower-payment plan cost more overall?
It could. A lower monthly payment or longer repayment period may mean paying more interest over time. Compare monthly payments and estimated total repayment, and consider any forgiveness goal before switching.
The Bottom Line
You can request a change to your federal student loan repayment plan at any time, but eligibility depends on your loans and the change is not final until your servicer processes it. Compare estimated payment and total cost, submit the request through the appropriate channel, and follow up with your servicer. If you are in SAVE, use the deadline in your individual servicer notice.
