Once a Bitcoin transaction is confirmed, the sender cannot cancel or reverse it through the network; recovery ordinarily depends on the recipient choosing to refund it. If your transaction is still unconfirmed, your wallet may offer a replacement that spends the same inputs with a higher fee—but the original could confirm first, so replacement is not guaranteed.
First check whether the transaction is confirmed
Look up the transaction in your wallet or a reliable block explorer. A broadcast transaction that has not entered a block has zero confirmations. A transaction included in a block has at least one. The distinction matters: a wallet may be able to attempt a replacement while a payment is pending, but a confirmed payment is not subject to a card-style chargeback.
Bitcoin.org explains that a Bitcoin transaction cannot be reversed; the recipient can refund it by sending a separate transaction. That refund is voluntary. If you sent bitcoin to a merchant, exchange, or person, contact them using their official support channel and provide the transaction ID and relevant details. Neither your wallet provider nor the Bitcoin network can generally compel the recipient to return the funds. Bitcoin.org’s consumer guidance
What you can do about an unconfirmed transaction
There are three practical choices: use a wallet-supported replacement, raise the fee while keeping the payment directed to the intended recipient, or wait. Which choices are available depends on the wallet, transaction, and node policies involved. A higher fee can help a transaction compete for inclusion, but it does not guarantee confirmation in the next block—or guarantee that a replacement will win.

Use the wallet’s documented cancel or replacement feature
Some wallets use “cancel” to describe broadcasting a conflicting transaction that spends the same inputs, often directing the funds back to an address you control and attaching a higher fee. It does not erase the original transaction from the record. Only one conflicting spend can ultimately be accepted on the same chain, and the original may confirm before the replacement is processed.
For example, Bitcoin.com Wallet’s support article, published November 25, 2024, says to open the pending outgoing transaction, choose “Speed Up” or “Cancel,” review the additional fee, and confirm. Its cancel option redirects funds to an address controlled by the sender. These are instructions for that wallet, not universal steps; follow your own wallet’s documentation and check the replacement’s destination before approving it. Bitcoin.com Wallet’s instructions

Speed up without changing the recipient
If your wallet supports fee bumping for the transaction, it may let you increase the fee while preserving the intended payment. Check the wallet’s preview carefully: confirm the destination, amount, and total fee before approving. Fee bumping is not a way to undo a payment; it is an attempt to have the intended transaction confirmed sooner.
Wait and monitor the status
A low-fee transaction may take longer to confirm. Bitcoin blocks arrive about every ten minutes on average, but individual block intervals are probabilistic, so there is no guaranteed minimum or maximum wait. A transaction disappearing from a wallet’s pending list or a node’s mempool does not prove it was universally canceled. Check its status and ask your wallet provider how it handles transactions that are no longer shown as pending. Bitcoin.org’s explanation of confirmation timing

Why a pending transaction may not be replaceable
Replacement depends on whether your wallet supports it for that transaction and whether the relevant node policies accept the competing transaction. Bitcoin Core’s replacement policy specifies conditions such as fee and mempool rules; those are software policies, not a universal promise that every wallet or node will handle a transaction identically. Consult your wallet’s help materials rather than assuming a “cancel” control exists. Bitcoin Core’s mempool replacement policy
At zero confirmations, a conflicting spend may still be attempted, but the original can be accepted first. The Bitcoin Developer Guide cautions against treating zero-confirmation payments as settled without considering the risk. Bitcoin Developer Guide

If you sent bitcoin to the wrong address
Identify whether the address belongs to a person, business, exchange, or other service. If it does, contact whoever controls it and request a refund; there is no protocol-level reversal you can initiate as sender. If the address is valid but no one controls it, the funds may be inaccessible. Bitcoin.org recommends checking the full destination address and considering a small test transfer before sending a larger amount. Bitcoin.org’s guidance on sending bitcoin

Each confirmation adds a block on top of the one containing a transaction. More confirmations make changing the chain history increasingly difficult, but confirmation depth is risk guidance—not a mathematical guarantee of irreversibility. Block discovery is probabilistic, and services may set their own acceptance policies based on value and risk.

For a payment you are receiving, consider the value at risk, the possibility of fraud, the number of confirmations, and the receiving service’s policy. Do not treat a particular confirmation count as an absolute guarantee.
Quick Recap
What to do now
- Check the transaction status. Determine whether it has zero confirmations or is already in a block.
- If it is unconfirmed, inspect your wallet’s options. Use only its documented replacement or fee-bump controls; confirm where any replacement funds will go and what extra fee will be charged.
- Monitor the transaction. A replacement request can lose the race to the original. Check the wallet or transaction status rather than assuming a pending-list change means cancellation.
- If it is confirmed or went to the wrong recipient, contact the recipient. Ask for a refund, understanding that the recipient must send it voluntarily.
