Sometimes—but usually not from an airport. In the United States, airlines handle missing checked bags first. After the airline’s recovery and claims process, some unclaimed baggage may be resold through a specialist retailer. Airport Lost and Found offices handle a different category of property, and their policies vary. If your own bag is missing, contact the airline; resale is not a way to recover it.
Where can you buy unclaimed luggage?
A prominent U.S. retailer is Unclaimed Baggage, based in Scottsboro, Alabama. It operates a physical store and an online shop. The company says it buys unclaimed baggage and cargo, primarily from commercial airlines, along with merchandise from other travel and transportation sources. It is a retailer, not an airport store, and this does not mean every airline or airport sends its unclaimed bags there.
The retailer says airlines first try to return bags to their owners and address claims before items reach its inventory. Goods are sorted: items suitable for retail are prepared for sale, while others may be repurposed, recycled, or donated. The retailer lists categories such as clothing, cameras, jewelry, electronics, and golf clubs; it also says electronics are tested and personal data is erased before sale. These are the company’s descriptions of its own process, not independent audits. Inventory, condition, prices, shipping, and return terms can change, so check the current listing and policies before buying.
“Lost luggage” can mean different things
A missing checked bag, a phone left in a terminal, and a jacket left at a security checkpoint do not go through one shared airport process. The responsible organization depends on where the item went missing.

| Checked baggage or an item left aboard an aircraft | Contact the airline. Pittsburgh International Airport directs travelers to the airline for these cases, and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) separates airline-related lost-suitcase inquiries from its public-area Lost and Found. Pittsburgh International Airport; LAX | Airline recovery and claims procedures apply. Some unclaimed baggage may later enter resale, but there is no single airport-wide route. |
| Property left in a terminal public area | Use that airport’s Lost and Found process. At LAX, airport police handle Lost and Found for specified public areas. LAX Lost and Found | Local rules determine what happens. LAX says unclaimed property is disposed of according to law and that auctioned items go to an external auction site. LAX |
| Property left at a TSA security checkpoint | Follow the Transportation Security Administration’s checkpoint-property process; it is separate from an airline baggage claim. | Federal law directs TSA to make reasonable efforts to transfer unclaimed clothing recovered at checkpoints to airport or local authorities for charitable donation. 49 U.S.C. § 44945(b)(1) |
| Unclaimed property handled by an airport authority | Check the specific airport’s Lost and Found policy and holding period. | Pittsburgh International Airport says local unclaimed property becomes airport property after its return window and is sent to auction or donated to local charities. That is Pittsburgh’s policy, not a universal rule. Pittsburgh International Airport |
If your checked bag is missing, file with the airline
Buying resale merchandise is not a substitute for trying to recover your own bag. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) says airlines are responsible for locating delayed checked bags. Report the problem promptly, keep your baggage identification tag and claim documents, and stay in contact with the airline during its search. DOT: Lost, delayed, or damaged baggage
Most airlines declare a checked bag lost between five and fourteen days after the flight, according to DOT consumer guidance; the interval depends on the airline’s policy. If the bag is delayed, keep receipts for reasonable, verifiable incidental expenses and follow the airline’s claim requirements. If the airline declares the bag lost or significantly delayed, you may be eligible for a refund of a baggage fee you paid, subject to DOT’s rules. DOT baggage guidance

What to check before buying
- Seller and location: Confirm whether the item is sold by the retailer online or at its Scottsboro store; do not assume an airport sells it.
- Condition and contents: Read the individual listing carefully. “Unclaimed” does not mean the item is new, complete, or suitable for every buyer.
- Final cost and recourse: Review shipping or pickup details, taxes, and the current return policy before checkout.
- Personal information: The retailer says it removes data from electronics it prepares for sale. For any used device, verify its condition and reset or secure it after purchase.
There is no established universal percentage of checked bags that are ultimately sold, nor a uniform rule requiring every airport to auction its lost property. The practical answer depends on the item’s location, the responsible organization, and the applicable claims or holding process.
