Yes, a Twitch creator can receive money during a sleep stream—but the widely reported $5,600 example was one creator’s 2020 event, not a typical income figure or Twitch ad payout. WIRED attributed Matthew “Mizkif” Rinaudo’s reported haul to viewers paying to submit videos for playback. The story shows that an audience may pay to participate in a stream; it does not show what a new streamer can expect to earn.
What the $5,600 headline refers to
WIRED reported on March 6, 2020, that Mizkif woke after a sleep stream $5,600 richer. Viewers had paid to submit videos that played during the broadcast. That figure is a publication-reported amount for one event, not a representative statistic, a recurring rate, or evidence of net income after any costs or taxes. WIRED’s 2020 report does not attribute the $5,600 to Twitch advertising or subscription payouts.
That distinction matters: in this example, the audience-funded mechanism was paid video submissions. A payment received while someone is asleep is not automatically money paid by Twitch, and one unusually successful broadcast does not establish what another creator will earn.
How creators can receive money during a sleep stream
Viewer payments and paid submissions
Viewers may choose to send money or pay to submit media, depending on the creator’s setup and the services involved. The WIRED account supports paid video submissions as the mechanism behind Mizkif’s reported total. It does not document a standard Twitch feature or a guaranteed income model for sleep streams.

Subscriptions and other audience support
WIRED described a separate approach by Amouranth: she encouraged donations and subscriptions, and every 20 subscriptions extended her alarm by an hour. That is a different audience prompt from Mizkif’s paid-submission setup. The two accounts should not be combined into a single formula or treated as evidence that every sleep stream can generate similar payments.
Twitch monetization tools
Twitch Creator Camp lists Bits, subscriptions, and ads among general monetization options; it also discusses sponsorships and Amazon Associates product links. These are possible routes for creators across Twitch content, not proof that they generated revenue in the reported sleep-stream example. Twitch Creator Camp’s monetization guidance and its introduction to monetization describe the broader options.

Tool access is not the same as getting a Twitch payout
Twitch’s monetized streamer agreement says that Partners and Affiliates may receive Program Fees under its terms, including fees related to Bits and paid or gifted subscriptions. The agreement also says subscription revenue percentages are shown in a creator’s dashboard and offers may change, so there is no single universal subscription split to apply to every streamer. Read Twitch’s monetized streamer agreement for the applicable terms.
In a May 13, 2026 announcement, Twitch said eligible streamers would gain broader access to tools such as subscriptions, Bits, emotes, badges, and Channel Points, with rollout beginning in the United States and expansion planned globally later in the year. Twitch distinguished access to tools from payout eligibility: receiving a payout still requires Partner or Affiliate status. The announcement also mentioned a $50 minimum payout threshold for US Spendable Balance; that figure is specific to the context Twitch described, not a universal threshold for every region or payout arrangement. Twitch’s May 2026 announcement provides the rollout details.

What a prospective streamer should take from the example
- Treat $5,600 as a historical anecdote. It describes one 2020 event, not an earnings forecast.
- Identify who pays and why. Viewer-paid submissions or voluntary support differ from platform fees for ads, Bits, or subscriptions.
- Check eligibility and current terms. Access to a tool does not by itself mean a creator qualifies for a Twitch payout.
- Do not budget around exceptional results. The available reporting provides no representative average for sleep-stream income and no basis for estimating a new streamer’s likely earnings.
Making a stream available while asleep does not make income passive or predictable: the reported event depended on viewers choosing to pay, and the sources do not establish a repeatable return. No particular equipment or sleep product is shown to be necessary to reproduce the event.
