Re:

Can Trump Sell His Truth Social Shares? What the $2 Billion Headline Means

The 2025 headline described a possible resale route for Trump’s TMTG shares, not a completed cash-out. Its $2 billion estimate is not current.

Donald Trump had a potential route to resell shares in Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), Truth Social’s publicly traded parent, but the April 4, 2025 report did not say he had sold them. It also reported TMTG’s response that no affiliate sale window was open at that time. The headline’s “$2 billion” was an estimate based on the stock price then—not a current valuation or cash Trump received.

What the April 2025 headline reported

The story concerned shares held through Trump’s revocable trust and a securities filing that described resales “from time to time in one or more offerings,” as reported by Gizmodo on April 4, 2025. That language described a possible resale path; it did not establish that a sale occurred. Gizmodo also reported TMTG’s response that there was no open window for an affiliate sale at that time.

That distinction matters: eligibility or a filing that permits resale is not the same as a completed transaction. The report did not announce that Trump or the trust had cashed out.

How much was the stake estimated to be worth?

Gizmodo reported that Trump held nearly 115 million TMTG shares, about 53% of the company, and estimated their market value at more than $2 billion using a share price of $18–$19 on April 4, 2025. Those are figures from that report and date, not a current share count or valuation.

Trump: The Art of the Deal

A quoted market price multiplied by a reported share count gives a paper value, not necessarily proceeds available from selling the entire position. A large sale could involve restrictions or affect the price achieved, and the report did not establish that any shares were sold or what price a seller would receive.

Did Trump cash out, and what do later filings show?

The materials available here do not establish whether Trump or his trust sold shares after the April 2025 report. A later filing does not answer that question for the trust as a whole: an August 2025 Form 4 records an acquisition of 11,552 shares and reports 37,498 shares held directly by Donald J. Trump. It covers that reported transaction and direct ownership; it does not establish the trust’s total holdings, current combined beneficial ownership, or a subsequent sale. See the August 2025 Form 4.

To verify a later sale or current position, readers would need a current ownership disclosure or transaction filing that covers the relevant holder and transaction. Neither the 2025 estimate nor a company balance-sheet figure substitutes for that evidence.

Why TMTG’s financial assets are not Trump’s stake value

TMTG’s second-quarter 2026 results release reported approximately $1.9 billion in company financial assets at June 30, 2026. That company-level figure included cash, restricted cash, short-term investments, equity securities, a note receivable and accrued interest, digital assets, and pledged digital assets. It is not the value of Trump’s shares, nor evidence of personal sale proceeds. The company’s second-quarter 2026 results release also reflects a later date and a different measure from the April 2025 market-value estimate.

TMTG’s 2026 second-quarter Form 10-Q identifies Truth Social, Truth+ and Truth.Fi as company products and says TMTG might need to refinance convertible notes if holders elect cash repayment in November 2026. That is corporate financing context; it does not show that Trump sold shares or needed to sell them. See TMTG’s second-quarter 2026 Form 10-Q.
