The player and 2024 agreement behind the claim that Stoke City are wasting £35,000 a week cannot be verified from the available reporting. Two different players have been associated with that estimated wage in separate sources, and neither confirms the terms of a 2024 deal. Stoke’s reported club-wide losses put its spending under scrutiny, but they do not establish that any one agreement was wasteful.
Who is Stoke City’s £35,000-a-week player?
The identity is unclear. A SalaryLeaks estimate for Stoke’s 2024–25 squad names Ben Gibson as the club’s highest-paid player at £35,000 a week. The site cautions that comprehensive Championship salary data is rarely published and many figures are estimates drawn from available reports and wage information, rather than confirmed contract disclosures. SalaryLeaks’ Stoke City wage estimates should therefore be treated as estimates.
A separate Sheffield Wednesday News opinion piece dated 19 March 2024 lists Wesley at £35,000 a week, attributing its wage figures to Capology. That article also says Wesley, Ciaran Clark, Lewis Baker and Million Manhoef had made 21 starts between them at that point. This is a dated snapshot in an opinion article; it does not identify Wesley as the subject of a 2024 agreement or establish his contribution over a full season. The Sheffield Wednesday News article does not resolve the identity.
Because these sources name different players and refer to different contexts, the £35,000 figure alone cannot identify the player or the agreement described in the claim.

What Stoke’s financial figures do—and do not—show
BBC Sport reported on 17 January 2025 that Stoke recorded a £25.7 million loss for the 2023–24 financial year. Staff wages rose by £4.3 million after falling by £7.3 million in 2022–23. The club made 26 new signings between the summer 2023 window and the end of the season. Those figures describe the club’s finances and recruitment activity, not the cost or value of a particular player’s contract. BBC Sport’s report on Stoke’s accounts provides the figures and context.
In the BBC report, football finance expert Kieran Maguire said he had calculated that Stoke had lost an average of £676,000 a week since relegation. That is Maguire’s attributed calculation, not an audited weekly loss figure for a specific agreement. He also observed: “There is a big difference between spending money and spending it well.” The distinction is pertinent, but it does not by itself show that a particular signing was poor value.

Stoke said the trading losses demonstrated “the cost of operating in the Championship and the importance of ongoing sustainable investment funding from the Club’s owners,” as quoted by BBC Sport. This is the club’s explanation of its wider financial position, not evidence for or against one player’s deal.

A weekly wage is only one part of the cost, and the available reports do not connect a verified contract to player-level evidence. A defensible assessment would need to establish:

- The deal’s actual terms: confirmed wage, duration, guaranteed payments, signing costs and any transfer fee. An estimated weekly wage is not a substitute for a disclosed contract.
- Availability and use: injuries, matchday involvement, starts and minutes, considered against the role the club signed the player to fill.
- Contribution: performance in that role and impact on the team, assessed over a meaningful period rather than from a single snapshot.
- Context and alternatives: the squad’s needs, results and the realistic options Stoke could have pursued instead.
Without that information for an identified player and agreement, the claim that £35,000 a week is “proving to be a waste” remains an unsubstantiated judgment. The club’s losses and rising staff costs are relevant to scrutiny of its overall spending, but they cannot settle an individual value-for-money question.
