Short answer: Shortcut is a real Excel-focused AI agent that can automate substantial portions of complex spreadsheet work, especially financial modeling, reporting, data cleanup, PDF extraction, and workbook editing. But “automates 90%” is promotional shorthand—not an independently verified promise that every user can finish 90% of every task without supervision. Shortcut claims 90%+ formula accuracy and presents its own benchmark results; a knowledgeable person still must check assumptions, formulas, source data, and business logic.
For finance professionals who repeatedly work in structured, multi-step spreadsheets, a controlled trial may be worthwhile. Casual users who need an occasional formula or chart may get better value from Excel’s built-in tools or a general AI assistant.
What Shortcut AI is
Shortcut is made by Fundamental Research Labs and is available through a web application, desktop app, Excel add-in, Google Sheets add-on, and a Windows command-line product called ShortcutXL. Microsoft’s AppSource listing describes it as an AI-powered Excel add-in. You can start at shortcut.ai or review the Microsoft AppSource listing.
Unlike a chat tool that merely explains a formula, Shortcut is designed to inspect and edit workbook structures. Its tutorials describe an agent that can work through multi-step tasks, ask clarifying questions, create or modify sheets, preserve formulas, and leave you with a file you can continue editing in Excel. It supports .xlsx, .xlsm, and .csv files according to its tutorial.
#1 Best Overall
- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
Typical work it can perform
- Build or update financial models, including DCF, LBO, valuation, pro forma, budgeting, and three-statement structures.
- Clean transaction or customer exports, find duplicates, standardize dates, and create exception lists.
- Generate summary tables, dashboards, charts, comparisons, and recurring reports.
- Propagate or revise formulas across selected ranges.
- Combine regional or departmental sheets and standardize formatting.
- Extract figures from PDFs, images, invoices, filings, or CIMs into structured spreadsheet rows.
Those capabilities are most relevant to analysts, investment bankers, private-equity teams, FP&A departments, accountants, real-estate analysts, and spreadsheet-heavy small businesses. The feature guide at shortcut.ai/tutorial/by-feature also emphasizes finance, reporting, and other complex workflows.
What the “90%” claim really means
Shortcut’s headline should not be read as a universal automation rate. The company markets 90%+ formula accuracy and reports benchmark advantages, but those figures are vendor-presented measurements under particular conditions. They do not establish that Shortcut can complete 90% of every workbook’s tasks, cells, time, or cost without review.
A valid formula can still be economically wrong. For example, an output may use revenue instead of gross profit for a margin, apply the wrong tax rate, mix monthly and annual periods, reverse an expense sign, reference the wrong entity, omit a consolidation adjustment, or use an incorrect DCF discount period. A polished workbook is not evidence that its assumptions are correct.
Tasks that tend to be more automatable
- Standardized cleanup and repetitive formatting.
- Formula propagation in a well-structured template.
- Summary tables, basic charts, and recurring report updates.
- Template completion and extraction from clean, machine-readable documents.
Tasks that still require judgment
- Defining what an ambiguous line item means.
- Resolving contradictory source data or selecting accounting treatment.
- Designing a new model when requirements are unclear.
- Choosing assumptions, sensitivity ranges, date conventions, or debt terms.
- Approving an investment conclusion or financial statement output.
The useful metric is not “what percentage of tasks produced a file?” It is the percentage of total task time eliminated after review. A two-minute generation that requires 45 minutes of checking may not deliver a 90% saving.

How to use Shortcut safely
Web workflow
- Create or open an account at shortcut.ai.
- Start with an empty sheet or upload an existing
.xlsx,.xlsm, or.csvfile. - Open the AI chat panel and identify the workbook, sheet, range, desired output, constraints, and checks.
- For a complicated job, request a plan before execution.
- Review the proposed steps, then allow the action to run.
- Inspect changed cells, formulas, formatting, totals, and assumptions.
- Use a checkpoint to revert if the result is wrong, then save or download a verified copy.
Excel add-in workflow
- Install Shortcut from Microsoft AppSource.
- Open a workbook and launch Shortcut from the ribbon or sidebar.
- Select the worksheet or range; use Add to Focus when the agent should work only in that area.
- Enter the task in natural language and review the edits in Excel.
- Return to a Shortcut checkpoint or use Excel Undo if necessary.
The Office installation page lists Excel 2016 or later on Windows and Mac, plus Excel on the web: installation details. Actual availability can depend on Microsoft 365 administration, add-in permissions, and your organization’s environment.

Ask, Plan, and Action modes
- Ask Mode: analyzes the workbook and returns insights without necessarily editing it.
- Plan Mode: proposes an implementation plan before changes are made.
- Action Mode: executes spreadsheet changes.
A sensible sequence for a sensitive file is Ask, then Plan, then Action. Shortcut describes automatic checkpoints and a Return to checkpoint control in its tutorials. Checkpoint rollback covers the state created by Shortcut; Excel Undo/Redo covers your manual edits. Keep a separate copy before major restructuring.
Prompt examples that produce safer results
Vague instructions create avoidable ambiguity. Identify the sheet, range, output, constraints, and validation steps.
Cleanup: “Inspect the Transactions sheet. Identify duplicate invoice IDs, standardize dates to YYYY-MM-DD, preserve the existing column order, and create an Exceptions sheet listing duplicate IDs and rows with missing amounts. Do not overwrite the original data. Before editing, provide a plan and identify ambiguous fields.”

PDF and document extraction: useful, not automatic truth
Shortcut’s power-user guide and API documentation describe uploading PDFs, images, and spreadsheets as reference material. It can help extract financial statements, invoices, filings, or reports into tables. See the power-user guide and API documentation.
Extraction is vulnerable to scanned pages, poor OCR, multi-column layouts, footnotes, parenthesized negatives, “in thousands” labels, restatements, tables split across pages, and ambiguous fiscal periods. Reconcile every extracted number to the source document, including units and period labels, before it enters a model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCompatibility and file risks
Shortcut’s materials describe native editing, macro preservation, and broad Excel compatibility, but those are product claims rather than a guarantee for every workbook. Test a copy when your file contains:
- VBA, Office Scripts, Power Query, Power Pivot, or third-party add-ins.
- External workbook links, data connections, protected sheets, hidden rows, or hidden sheets.
- Merged cells, dynamic arrays, custom functions, circular references, or volatile formulas.
After each major operation, open the workbook in your production Excel environment, recalculate it, test macros and queries, and check external links. Transfer only verified changes to the untouched source file.
Validation checklist before you rely on the output
- Recalculate the workbook and inspect formula precedents and dependents.
- Compare key totals with an independent calculation or prior approved version.
- Confirm historical periods were not changed.
- Scan formula areas for hard-coded values, broken references, and missing forecast formulas.
- Check balance-sheet, cash-flow, subtotal, and control checks.
- Reconcile PDF-derived values to page references, units, and fiscal periods.
- Verify signs, dates, entity scope, tax treatment, and sensitivity ranges.
- Test macros, Power Query, links, add-ins, hidden content, and protected areas.
Privacy and security questions
Shortcut says paid-plan data is not used for AI training and describes encryption, isolated processing, and security controls. Its pricing and documentation pages describe enterprise options such as SSO, custom permissions, BYOK, private gateway, and custom contracts: pricing and documentation.

Current Shortcut pricing
The official pricing page checked August 18, 2026 is the current reference. Older blog figures are stale; do not rely on the older $39–$49 Pro descriptions.
| Plan | Price and allowance | Best understood as |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 per month; 20 weekly credits | Small, representative trials |
| Pro | $100 per month when billed annually; 1,000 monthly credits | Individual, frequent use |
| Teams | $320 per month plus $100 per seat per month when billed annually; 1,000 pooled credits | Shared usage and administration |
| Enterprise | Custom pricing | SSO, permissions, BYOK, private gateway, and negotiated support |
Shortcut says a message typically consumes 2–15 credits, depending on complexity. A large transformation, repeated correction cycle, or multi-file run can therefore cost more than a simple request. Track credits per completed workbook, prompt iterations, review time, and rework—not just the subscription price. See current pricing.

Microsoft Copilot in Excel
Copilot is the natural choice for organizations already standardized on Microsoft 365 and wanting assistance inside the familiar Excel ecosystem. Shortcut’s comparison article positions Copilot as stronger for basic assistance and Shortcut as more specialized for complex financial models; that is a vendor-authored comparison, not neutral testing. Verify current licensing at Excel and Copilot.
Claude and general-purpose AI assistants
General AI tools are useful for explaining formulas, drafting VBA, troubleshooting errors, and designing spreadsheet logic. They may explain what to do without editing and returning an auditable workbook. Shortcut’s homepage presents a July 2026 comparison with Claude for Excel, including accuracy and cost claims; treat those as Shortcut’s benchmark, not an industry conclusion.

Google Sheets
Google Sheets fits browser-first collaboration and Google Workspace teams: official product page. Excel-dependent teams using VBA, advanced desktop features, or established .xlsm workflows may need a different approach.
Deterministic automation
Power Query, Power Pivot, Power Automate, Office Scripts, VBA, Python libraries such as pandas and openpyxl, and SQL pipelines generally require more setup but offer repeatability, testing, monitoring, and governance. They are often preferable for stable, rules-based processes that run at scale.
Who should try Shortcut?
Good fit
- Finance and operations teams with recurring, multi-step workbook tasks.
- Users who can review formulas and business logic independently.
- Teams with structured templates that benefit from PDF extraction, model editing, or report updates.
- Organizations that want an Excel or Google Sheets workflow plus API access.
Poor fit
- People who only need occasional SUM, XLOOKUP, formatting, or chart help.
- Anyone unable to verify formulas, assumptions, or source data.
- Highly regulated organizations that cannot approve cloud processing.
- Teams requiring deterministic, unattended execution with no exception process.
- Users expecting compatibility with every macro, connection, add-in, or undocumented company rule.
- Buyers seeking a cheap unlimited individual plan.
A practical seven-day evaluation
Use your own representative workload rather than accepting a percentage claim. Include:
- A messy CSV cleanup.
- A recurring monthly report.
- A workbook requiring formula updates.
- A historical-and-forecast financial model.
- A PDF-to-Excel extraction.
- A dashboard or chart request.
- A deliberately difficult workbook with errors or inconsistent formatting.
For every task, record prompt and waiting time, correction rounds, incorrect formulas, formatting preservation, external-link and macro behavior, independent-check results, credits consumed, and final human-review time. Calculate whether the verified time saved justifies the plan cost and security overhead.

Verdict
Shortcut can automate a meaningful share of complex Excel mechanics, and it is more compelling for finance-heavy, multi-step work than for casual spreadsheet questions. The “90%” wording is not a universal, independently established outcome. Treat Shortcut as an agent that accelerates construction and editing—not as a replacement for spreadsheet judgment, model review, or approval controls.
Start with the free tier or a small paid trial on a non-sensitive copy of a real workbook. Move confidential data only after IT, legal, or compliance approves the current terms, and keep a human review step for every financial output that matters.
