The affected population primarily comprised current and former employees and job applicants—not a confirmed list of 2.3 million retail customers. Potentially exposed information included Social Security numbers, government-identification numbers, dates of birth, contact details and employment-related data. The related settlement’s ordinary claim period has ended: claims were due October 8, 2025, payments were issued February 5, 2026, and checks became void after May 6, 2026.

The exact information varied by person. The breach notices establish potential access or copying; they do not establish that every person had every listed field exposed or that every affected person suffered identity theft.

What happened and when?
- April 14–May 24, 2024: The company said an unauthorized third party accessed or copied information stored in Snowflake.
- May 23, 2024: Advance Auto said it learned of the incident and engaged outside cybersecurity specialists.
- June 10, 2024: The review identifying affected information was completed.
- July 10, 2024: Written notices began going to affected individuals.
Advance Auto’s notice identifies Snowflake as the environment where the information was maintained. Cybersecurity coverage connected the incident to the broader 2024 wave of attacks involving Snowflake customer environments, but the company notice alone does not establish the attacker’s identity, precise intrusion method or every detail of that wider campaign. Were 2.3 million Advance Auto customers affected?
“Customers” is misleading shorthand. The official settlement FAQ identifies the affected groups as job applicants, current employees and former employees. It separately says consumer-oriented information—such as customer profiles, order details, loyalty-program data and sales history—was outside the settlement’s released claims.
That qualification does not prove that no customer-related file existed anywhere in the affected systems. It does mean readers should not assume that everyone represented in the 2.3 million figure was a retail shopper. A person who merely bought parts from Advance Auto should not treat the headline as proof of settlement eligibility.

What information may have been exposed?
- Full name
- Email and mailing address
- Social Security number
- Driver’s-license number or another government-issued identification number
- Date of birth
- Demographic information
- Information associated with an application, current employment or former employment
Not every affected individual necessarily had every data element in the exposed material. A breach notice means the information was potentially accessible or copied, not that misuse has been proven for each person.

What did Advance Auto offer after the incident?
State filings say the company offered affected individuals 12 months of Experian credit monitoring and identity-theft protection. Maryland’s filing reported approximately 54,595 Maryland residents were notified; Maine recorded the same July 10, 2024 notification start date. The original offer was tied to the breach notice, so someone who never received a notice should not assume they had access to that benefit.
Monitoring can alert you to some changes, but it cannot remove an exposed Social Security number or prevent every type of fraud.

What was the Advance Auto settlement?
The litigation was consolidated in the U.S. District Court for the District of Montana as In re: Snowflake, Inc. Data Security Breach Litigation, case number 2:24-md-03126-BMM-JTJ. The Advance Auto settlement covered U.S. individuals who were sent a notice that their private information was potentially compromised.
Advance Auto denied wrongdoing, and the administrator states that no court found the company liable for the incident. Settlement participation was not an admission of liability.

Historical settlement benefits

These were not automatic $5,000 checks. The maximum applied only to qualifying documented losses, and cash estimates could be reduced pro rata.
Can you still file an Advance Auto breach claim?
Not through the normal claims process as of August 18, 2026. The claim deadline was October 8, 2025; approved payments were issued February 5, 2026; and paper checks became void after May 6, 2026. Older articles saying that claims are still open are out of date.
If you submitted a claim and have a payment question, use only the court-authorized administrator at aapdatasettlement.com. The site lists the administrator’s phone number as (833) 420-3832. Do not rely on a law-firm advertisement or a social-media link.
What potentially affected people should do now
- Find your original notice. Receiving an Advance Auto breach letter is the clearest indicator that you were in the notified group. Keep the letter and settlement correspondence.
- Freeze your credit. Place free freezes with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. A freeze restricts access to your credit file and is generally more protective against new-account fraud than monitoring alone.
- Plan for the inconvenience. You may need to lift a freeze temporarily when applying for credit, renting, opening utilities or completing some checks.
- Review your credit reports. Look for unfamiliar accounts, inquiries, addresses and collection activity.
- Turn on financial alerts. Enable transaction and login notifications at banks and card issuers.
- Watch for non-credit fraud. Be alert to tax-related identity theft, employment scams, account takeovers and phishing that uses personal details from the breach.
- Document suspicious activity. Save letters, emails, account notices and receipts connecting any loss to the incident.
- Report identity theft. Use the appropriate federal identity-theft reporting channel and follow the affected account provider’s fraud process.
How to spot a fake settlement message
- Never pay an upfront fee to receive a settlement payment.
- Do not provide passwords, bank-login credentials or a full Social Security number to an unsolicited caller or email.
- Be cautious of urgent “verification” demands and links on domains that are not aapdatasettlement.com.
- Type the official website address yourself rather than following an unexpected payment link.
- Promises of guaranteed payouts, guaranteed identity-theft prevention or special access to closed claims are warning signs.
Bottom line
The Advance Auto Parts breach affected 2,316,591 people, and the 2.3 million figure is substantially accurate. The people identified in official disclosures were mainly employees and job applicants, so calling them all “customers” is inaccurate. Sensitive identity and employment information may have been exposed, but misuse is not established for everyone. The settlement’s claim window is closed; current protection efforts should focus on credit freezes, report reviews, account alerts and scam resistance.
