In a July 15, 2025 report, CIO attributed the estimate to Irfan Khan, SAP’s president and chief product officer of Data & Analytics. The report describes SAP’s pitch, not an independently validated result.
What SAP’s 80% claim means
Khan said data collection, refinement, and quality control typically account for more than 80% of the overall data-management function. SAP’s argument is that automating work to align and synchronize data sources could reduce the effort spent on those tasks.
That is different from demonstrating an 80% reduction in total data-management work. The CIO report does not provide a study design, customer sample, workload baseline, or independent validation showing how much work BDC actually saves. It also gives no measured savings in labor, implementation time, or cost.
The report is Jihyun Lee’s July 15, 2025 account of a press conference with Khan in Seoul. Read the original coverage at CIO.

What Business Data Cloud is described as doing
SAP launched BDC in February 2025. CIO described it as a software-as-a-service data platform intended to organize SAP and non-SAP data by meaning. The report says SAP presented zero-copy modeling and native Databricks integration as part of the offering, alongside a proposition to align and synchronize data without ETL or data-pipeline management.
In practical terms, the pitch is to make connected business data easier to use without relying on as much manual preparation and pipeline upkeep. The report does not establish how much work that approach removes in a particular company, or what implementation and operating effort it requires.

Cloud, data access, and AI use cases
In the 2025 interview, SAP positioned BDC to run across AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure as part of its BDC Everywhere strategy. These are product descriptions reported at that time, not confirmation of current deployment options or regional availability.
Khan said, “Open access is essential because 70% of our customers have non-SAP data.” CIO’s report does not explain the dataset or methodology behind that figure, so it should be treated as Khan’s statement rather than an independently verified statistic.
The report also named dispute-resolution and shipment-confirmation agents as examples associated with BDC, and said integrated data could support AI agents or SAP’s Joule assistant. Those are described use cases, not measured evidence of business outcomes. Khan said BDC would become officially available in Korea at the end of July 2025; that was a forecast made in the interview, not confirmation of current availability.

For a finance or technology team evaluating BDC, the key question is not whether data preparation can be automated in principle, but which work it removes in the organization’s own environment. Ask SAP or an implementation partner to define the baseline and identify what is included in “data-management work.”

- Workload and baseline: Specify which collection, refinement, and quality-control tasks are in scope, how much staff time they currently consume, and how savings will be measured.
- Source coverage: Confirm that the SAP and non-SAP systems, formats, and data domains that matter to your organization are supported.
- Data movement and upkeep: Clarify where data is copied versus modeled in place, and what ongoing integration, pipeline, and synchronization work remains.
- Governance and quality: Establish who owns data definitions, access controls, lineage, and quality checks after automation.
- Deployment and AI fit: Verify current cloud choices and whether the intended AI agents or Joule use cases are available and suitable for your environment.
- Total effort and cost: Include implementation, migration, training, and ongoing operations in any comparison; the CIO report supplies no pricing or cost benchmark.
When comparing BDC with another data platform, use the same workload definition and baseline for both. The CIO account provides no comparative benchmark or customer-outcome dataset, so it cannot support a vendor ranking or a forecast of a particular company’s savings.
