Can ₹2,000 a Month in PPF Make Your Child a Crorepati? The 50-Year Calculation

At a constant 7.1% rate, ₹2,000 a month modeled as annual year-end deposits reaches about ₹1.17 crore over 50 years. It is an illustration, not a guaranteed PPF outcome.

Yes, in an illustrative calculation—but only over a very long horizon. Investing ₹2,000 a month (₹24,000 a year) in a Public Provident Fund (PPF) account for 50 years, with a constant 7.1% annual rate and contributions simplified as year-end deposits, grows to about ₹1.17 crore. That is a scenario, not a promised return: the Department of Posts currently lists PPF at 7.1% compounded yearly, but rates can change, and actual interest depends on when money is deposited. A child does not reach this amount at PPF’s initial 15-year maturity.

How the ₹2,000-a-month calculation reaches about ₹1.17 crore

At ₹2,000 per month, the annual contribution is ₹24,000. To make the long-run arithmetic transparent, treat that as one ₹24,000 contribution at the end of each year and assume it earns 7.1% annually for all 50 years. The result is approximately ₹1.17 crore. The 7.1% input is the rate currently displayed by the Department of Posts, Government of India, as 7.1% per annum, compounded yearly; it is not a guarantee that the rate will hold for five decades. Illustration input Assumption
Contribution ₹2,000 monthly, or ₹24,000 for a full year
Contribution timing in calculation ₹24,000 deposited at each year-end
Annual rate 7.1% throughout, compounded yearly; current posted rate used as a fixed modeling assumption
Contribution period 50 years
Illustrative ending corpus Approximately ₹1.17 crore

This estimate is a derived calculation, not a government-published forecast or a statement of what a PPF account will pay. The simplification matters: actual PPF interest uses the eligible monthly balance and is credited at year-end, rather than treating all of each year’s contributions as if deposited at year-end. If the rate changes, the actual outcome changes too.

How long until the child could become a crorepati?

The crore-sized estimate depends on the full 50-year scenario. It should not be read as an outcome at the account’s initial 15-year maturity. At the stated constant-rate assumptions, the calculation reaches the neighborhood of ₹1 crore only after about five decades; the initial investment period is much shorter.

PPF’s initial term is 15 years. The National Savings Institute’s scheme text permits extensions in five-year blocks, including extensions with further deposits, subject to the scheme’s application rules. Therefore, a 50-year illustration assumes the saver continues contributing and makes the required extension choices when each term ends. National Savings Institute PPF Scheme text.

What ₹2,000 monthly means under current PPF rules

The Government of India’s myScheme PPF summary lists a minimum deposit of ₹500 and a maximum of ₹1.5 lakh per financial year. ₹24,000 in annual contributions is within that stated range. Deposits may be made as a lump sum or in instalments. myScheme PPF summary.

Deposit dates affect actual interest

The scheme summary says monthly interest eligibility is based on the lowest balance between the close of the fifth day and the end of the month, with interest credited at year-end. A monthly deposit made after the fifth day may therefore not count toward the eligible balance for that month. The year-end-deposit formula used above is only a clear illustration; it does not replicate a particular schedule of ₹2,000 monthly deposits.

A guardian can save for a minor, but the ceiling is shared

A guardian may open a PPF account on behalf of a minor. The cited scheme summary specifies that the ₹1.5 lakh annual maximum includes deposits to the guardian’s own PPF account and the minor’s account, so a child’s account does not create a separate additional allowance.

What to keep in mind before relying on the projection

  • The rate is revisable. The 7.1% rate is what the Department of Posts currently lists, not a five-decade promise. A change in the rate can materially alter the final corpus.
  • The horizon is the main driver. The estimate assumes 50 years of contributions and compounding, not a single 15-year term.
  • Extensions and ongoing deposits are necessary for this scenario. The long horizon depends on continuing contributions through eligible five-year extension blocks under the scheme rules.
  • Deposit timing and the calculation method differ. PPF’s monthly balance rule determines interest eligibility; the illustration simplifies deposits into year-end payments.

Tax treatment is subject to current law

The Government of India scheme summary describes PPF deposits as qualifying under section 80C and interest as tax-free under the Income Tax Act. Tax rules can change, and individual eligibility and tax circumstances matter, so this description of the referenced framework is not individualized tax advice.
