Yes—as a category, India’s kirana stores can survive instant delivery, but not every shop will thrive unchanged. General trade remains central to FMCG sales, while rapid-delivery apps are reshaping convenience shopping in some urban areas. The likely outcome is uneven: a shop’s prospects depend on its customers, location, service and ability to manage stock and procurement.
How much of a threat is instant delivery to kirana stores?
The pressure is real, but it is not evidence that neighbourhood shops are about to disappear nationwide. In a 12 June 2026 release, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and ONDC said India has over 1.4 crore kirana stores, which account for nearly 75–80 per cent of FMCG sales. That scale makes general trade a major part of the country’s retail system; it does not guarantee the future of any individual shop.
Rapid-delivery services compete most directly when shoppers want a convenient top-up or a product brought to them quickly. A nearby shop may offer personal service and locally arranged delivery, but its range depends on what it has stocked and can replenish. Apps offer digital browsing and ordering. There is no established, general price advantage for either option: customers need to compare the actual basket and promotions.
These pressures are not uniform. Evidence about online grocery buyers in large cities should not be treated as a forecast for every neighbourhood, small town or rural market.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell us
Different figures answer different questions. The scale of general trade is an official estimate; consumer and retailer surveys describe the people and places they sampled; industry estimates are not official statistics. None provides a reliable nationwide forecast of kirana closures caused by instant delivery.

Claims that a particular number of kiranas have closed because of quick commerce need transparent information about the period, geography, methods and causes. The sources cited here do not independently establish a representative causal count. The Competition Commission of India’s cited study concerns e-commerce generally and dates to 2020; it is not evidence of contemporary quick-commerce closures.

What can a kirana do to compete?
There is no single upgrade that guarantees survival. Practical choices should address the shop’s actual customer needs and operating constraints rather than copy an app’s entire model.
Make local service useful
A shop can lean on convenient access, familiarity and locally arranged delivery where customers value them. Before adding delivery, the owner needs to consider whether order volume, staffing and delivery costs make the service workable. The available evidence does not establish typical costs or a reliable profit margin for this model.

Improve stock visibility and replenishment
DPIIT and ONDC describe fragmented ordering, limited inventory visibility and manual sales processes as continuing general-trade inefficiencies. Better records and a clearer view of what is selling can help a retailer identify stock gaps and make procurement more deliberate. The precise benefit depends on how the shop operates; the cited sources do not quantify a typical sales or profit gain from digitising inventory.
Check whether digital procurement support fits
Government describes DigiDukaan as an ONDC initiative for digitising kirana B2B procurement. Its stated aims include visibility into procurement schemes, improved fill rates and working-capital management. ONDC describes a unified interface and faster replenishment as intended features. These are programme goals, not independent proof of increased profit or survival. Retailers should check current local availability and terms through ONDC’s DigiDukaan information.

Consider digital-commerce onboarding where it makes sense
The MSME TEAM scheme supports small sellers’ digital-commerce onboarding through ONDC, including digital literacy, awareness, cataloguing and onboarding. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry reported more than 1.16 lakh retail sellers live on ONDC across 630+ cities and towns as of 9 December 2025. That is the network’s retail-seller count, not a kirana-only figure, and it does not show that every retailer is eligible or that onboarding is available everywhere. Check the government’s MSME TEAM scheme update for information and verify current local eligibility and terms.

The evidence supports a conditional answer, not a precise forecast. India’s large general-trade footprint shows why kiranas remain important, while surveys of buyers and shop owners in major cities provide a reason to take changing convenience habits seriously. But national scale cannot tell an owner whether one particular shop will retain customers or cover its costs.

Assess the shop’s own customer mix, nearby competition, repeat demand, stock availability and the economics of any new service before investing. The available sources do not settle city-by-city survival rates, typical lost sales, causal closure counts, or the unit economics of delivery and digitisation. A kirana may adapt through service, procurement improvements or digital access, but none of those options is a guaranteed rescue.
For personal finances, the same uncertainty matters to anyone considering putting savings into a shop or lending to one: national retail figures are not a substitute for the business’s own sales, costs and cash-flow records.
