A farm with suitable equipment may be able to move its own crops or haul for other farms, but the opportunity depends on local demand, freight needs, operating costs, and compliance requirements.
Why trucking constraints can matter to farmers
USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service identifies driver turnover, pay and benefits, and inadequate safe parking as factors that can affect trucking service availability for food and agricultural products. Perishable produce can face added constraints because it may require cold storage and specialized trucks. These pressures can make dependable local transport capacity valuable, but they do not establish a nationwide shortage of a particular size or prove that farmers can earn a profit by hauling.
Agricultural freight also moves by rail, barge, and ocean vessel, as well as by truck. The best option depends on the commodity, distance, infrastructure, and connections to storage, processors, or terminals. USDA AMS’s Transportation Research & Analysis page tracks work on freight planning, produce markets, and transportation disruptions; its From Truck to Trade: Building Resilient Produce Markets report addresses produce-market infrastructure and transport networks.
How farm-owned trucks may fit into the supply chain
USDA’s older Study of Rural Transportation Issues describes farmers’ commercial-sized trucks as one source of capacity, particularly for the first movement of grain and other products from farms toward storage or another transport mode. The report says farm-owned trucks can influence availability and competition, and may help stabilize first-movement supply when variable costs are covered.

That is not the same as evidence of a large, measurable market for farmers hauling for others. The report says reliable statistics on farm truck ownership are unavailable and the extent to which farmers haul for other farmers is unknown. It is also historical material, so it should not be used to infer current market size, rates, or earnings.
What determines whether hauling could pay
Before treating spare truck capacity as a business opportunity, assess the specific route, load, and customer. A shortage elsewhere does not guarantee unmet demand where your farm operates, or that the available loads will cover the full cost of service.

- Customer demand: Identify who needs transport, how often, and whether existing carriers or farm arrangements already serve them.
- Commodity and season: Grain and other nonperishable loads have different handling needs from produce. Harvest peaks may create demand but can also conflict with your own farm schedule.
- Equipment fit: Check that the truck and any trailer or temperature-control equipment match the commodity, route, and customer’s requirements.
- Total operating cost: Account for fuel, maintenance, labor, downtime, and the cost of moving the truck between loads. The USDA materials cited here do not provide current cost estimates or hauling rates.
- Route and connections: Consider distance to fields, storage, processors, terminals, and alternative modes such as rail or barge where available.
- Compliance and insurance: Confirm applicable local and other regulatory requirements and insurance needs before accepting commercial hauling work; requirements depend on the operation and location.
Compare the expected revenue and costs for an actual customer and route rather than assuming that a truck already owned by the farm is cost-free. If the numbers work only when the truck is fully utilized, account for seasonal gaps and the possibility that paid hauling could interfere with farm operations.

Farmworker availability and truck-driver availability are different labor questions. USDA ERS materials discuss how labor-intensive fruit and vegetable producers respond to farm labor costs through management changes, mechanization, seasonal guest workers, or changes in production. Those responses do not measure truck-driver supply.

USDA ERS reports around 385,000 H-2A positions certified in FY 2024, while cautioning that a certified job does not necessarily result in a visa. That figure concerns farm labor, not truck drivers, and cannot be used to quantify a trucking shortage.

How to evaluate local transport options
- Define the job: Specify the commodity, pickup and delivery points, timing, load requirements, and whether the need is first movement from a field or longer-haul freight.
- Check alternatives: Ask about available truckers and, where practical, storage, rail, barge, or other transport connections. USDA AMS describes agricultural transportation as a network across these modes, not trucking alone.
- Build a route-level budget: Include the full operating and compliance costs for the equipment and service being considered. Do not rely on a generalized shortage claim as a substitute for a customer, rate, and cost calculation.
- Confirm the arrangement: Before committing, verify the customer’s schedule and handling requirements, plus the insurance and regulatory obligations that apply locally.
