Yes, in principle. The UK government says the UK–EU Common Understanding removes legal barriers to British nationals using eGates after the EU introduced its Entry/Exit System (EES). That does not guarantee access at every airport: local authorities decide how gates are implemented, and travelers should follow airport signs and staff instructions.
What changed for British passport holders?
The UK government says the UK–EU Common Understanding confirmed there would be “no legal barriers to eGates use for UK nationals travelling to and from EU Member States after the introduction of the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES).” That is a change in legal eligibility, not a promise that a British traveler can use an automated gate at every crossing. The European Commission says EES enables wider use of automated border control, but Member States retain discretion over eGate use. A Council negotiating-position document says use should remain voluntary for Member States. Will I be able to use the eGates at my airport?
There is no comprehensive official airport-by-airport list established here. An airport may have eGates, but that alone does not show that British travelers may use them, that the gates will be operating on your arrival, or that your circumstances meet local conditions. Check current instructions from the airport or national border authority before traveling, and use the staffed passport-control route if directed.

- Check whether the specific airport or crossing point accepts British passport holders at its eGates.
- Confirm any local document, age, or other user conditions with the relevant authority.
- Follow signs and border staff directions; a gate may be closed or unavailable.
- Keep separate entry requirements, including any applicable travel authorization, in mind.
What EES does—and what it does not do
EES is the EU’s border-registration system for covered non-EU nationals visiting for short stays. It records travel-document and biometric information, as well as entry and exit details, at the external borders of 29 participating European countries. On 27 July 2026, the Commission’s Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs reported that EES had registered more than 145 million entries and exits since launch. EES and ETIAS are separate requirements
EES registers eligible travelers’ border crossings and biometrics at the border. ETIAS is a separate pre-travel authorization for visa-exempt travelers visiting 30 European countries. Being eligible to use an eGate does not by itself satisfy any ETIAS requirement.
In an update published 28 April 2026, the European Commission said ETIAS was scheduled to start in the last quarter of 2026, with an exact date to be announced later. The official ETIAS FAQ said the system was not yet operating when checked. British nationals generally need ETIAS for short stays in participating countries once it is operating, subject to applicable exemptions, including for qualifying Withdrawal Agreement beneficiaries.
