The specific Jaipur ITAT case described as involving a senior citizen’s Rs 65.27 lakh bank deposit and his son’s evidence could not be verified in the available case materials. It would therefore be misleading to report that the son proved the source or that the taxpayer won. Two separate Jaipur tribunal decisions offer a narrower, useful lesson: a cash explanation supported by records may succeed, while a deposit without documentary support may not.
What the reported Rs 65.27 lakh case establishes
The exact order matching the Rs 65.27 lakh amount, senior-citizen description, son’s role and claimed outcome was not identified. Those details should not be treated as confirmed facts or attributed to another Jaipur case. Without the judgment or a reliable report of it, the outcome and the evidence said to have proved the source remain unverified.

For a taxpayer who receives a notice about a cash deposit, the relevant question is whether the nature and source of the money can be satisfactorily explained in the circumstances of the assessment—not simply whether the account holder is a senior citizen or a relative offers an explanation.
What the Jaipur ITAT decisions do show
Documented withdrawals supported the explanation in Prem Lata Pandya
In Prem Lata Pandya v. DCIT, ITA No. 1471/JPR/2024, decided on 27 January 2025, the taxpayer relied on cash withdrawals from several concerns and an affidavit supporting the availability of that cash. The order lists withdrawals of Rs 7,37,000, Rs 11,50,000, Rs 5,30,000 and Rs 40,000—a total of Rs 24,57,000. These figures belong to that case, not to the unverified Rs 65.27 lakh matter. The tribunal noted that the lower authorities had not explained why the withdrawal-based account was unacceptable and held that the evidence could not simply be brushed aside. On the records before it, the explained amount was not unexplained money under section 69A, so section 115BBE’s special-rate treatment did not apply to that amount. The appeal was partly allowed; this is a fact-specific result, not a general rule that any past withdrawal explains a later deposit.
Missing source evidence counted against the taxpayer in Upendra Kumar Soni
In the separate matter Upendra Kumar Soni v. ACIT, Central Circle-Kota, decided on 11 August 2025, the tribunal upheld an addition under section 69A after finding that the taxpayer had not established the source of cash deposited during demonetisation with documentary evidence. The order also describes inadequate responses to assessment notices. Read the tribunal decision.

The contrast is not senior-citizen status versus another taxpayer’s status. It is the difference between an explanation supported by evidence that authorities must address and a claimed source that the taxpayer did not substantiate in the proceedings. These decisions describe the cases before the tribunal; they do not set out a formal checklist that guarantees a result.

Build a traceable account of where the cash came from, how it remained available and how it reached the bank. A family member’s statement may help explain a transaction, but the cited decisions do not establish that a son’s assertion alone proves the source.

- Read the notice carefully. Note the assessment year, the deposit dates and amounts in question, the provision cited, the response deadline and the documents requested.
- Identify the specific source for each deposit. For example, distinguish withdrawals from business receipts or another claimed source rather than relying on a general statement that the cash was saved.
- Assemble records that connect the source to the cash. Depending on the explanation, relevant material may include bank statements showing withdrawals, business records, deposit slips and an affidavit or other supporting evidence. The records should make the claimed cash trail understandable; an affidavit was part of the evidence in Prem Lata Pandya, but the decision does not say an affidavit alone is sufficient.
- Respond to the department’s questions and preserve proof of submission. The Upendra Kumar Soni order describes non-response and a lack of documentary evidence. Keep copies of the response and its attachments, along with confirmation that they were submitted.
- Get advice based on the actual assessment year and record. The legal position and procedural options depend on the applicable statutory text, the year involved and the history of the case. A qualified Indian tax adviser or chartered accountant can assess those details.
What section 69A means in this context
The two reviewed tribunal decisions discuss section 69A in relation to money whose nature and source were not satisfactorily explained in the circumstances described by the statute. They do not establish that every large bank deposit is automatically taxable, or that a family member’s explanation automatically prevents an addition. Nor does either decision establish a blanket exemption for senior citizens. The outcome depends on the evidence and procedural record in the particular assessment.
The orders are case decisions, not individual tax advice. A taxpayer facing a notice should consider the actual notice, relevant assessment year and supporting records rather than assuming that the result in another appeal will apply.
