Usually, a purchaser cannot cancel a genuine cashier’s check just because they changed their mind, but a check can be counterfeit, altered, or stolen. A bank may make a deposited check’s funds available before confirming it is genuine, so an available balance is not proof that the check has cleared. Lost or stolen checks follow a separate claim process that depends on the bank and state law.

Can someone cancel a cashier’s check after it is issued?

Generally, not through an ordinary stop-payment order. A cashier’s check is drawn on the issuing bank, rather than on the purchaser’s personal account. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) says a customer generally cannot order stop payment and the bank must honor the check when it is presented. That is general OCC guidance, not a complete statement of the law in every state or for every bank. OCC guidance on stopping payment.

The answer can differ if the check is lost, destroyed, or stolen. Those circumstances may allow a special claim, declaration of loss, or replacement process; they are not the same as changing your mind about a check that is still in circulation. Contact the issuing bank promptly and ask what applies to your situation.

State-law procedures are not universal

State rules illustrate why it is important to ask the issuer and avoid assuming there is one nationwide waiting period. New York’s UCC 4-403 provides a specific stop-payment procedure for a cashier’s check after 90 days from issuance, subject to a sufficiently specific written order and affidavit of loss received in time for the bank to act. Illinois’s UCC 3-312 addresses a claim for a lost, destroyed, or stolen cashier’s check. A qualifying claim generally becomes enforceable at the later of the date it is asserted or the 90th day after the check’s date. Illinois UCC 3-312. These are examples from two states, not a complete description of the rules elsewhere.

Can a cashier’s check be fake?

Yes. A cashier’s check can be counterfeit, altered from a genuine check, or stolen. A bank name, logo, routing number, or convincing appearance printed on the paper does not establish that the bank issued it. The OCC has warned that altered checks and routing-number mismatches can make fraudulent items harder to identify. OCC Bulletin 2007-2 on fraudulent cashier’s checks.

Common schemes include an apparent buyer sending a check for more than the agreed price and asking the seller to wire the difference to someone else. Other reported scenarios involve purported lottery or inheritance proceeds that require a fee, mystery-shopping assignments, and fake money-transfer-agent jobs. The pattern is similar: the recipient deposits a check, then sends money or goods before the paying bank determines whether the check is genuine. If it is fraudulent, the depositary bank may reverse the credit, while the recipient has already lost the money or property sent.

Does “available” mean a cashier’s check cleared?

No. “Available” describes when your bank lets you access deposited money under its funds-availability rules; it does not necessarily mean the issuing bank has verified and paid the check. A bank may make funds accessible while the item is still being processed or before fraud is discovered. If the check later proves counterfeit or otherwise uncollectible, your bank may reverse the credit or seek repayment. The OCC warns that detection can take weeks. In consumer guidance last reviewed in April 2021, the OCC says an in-person deposit of a cashier’s check to a bank employee generally must be available by the next business day, subject to exceptions. The OCC’s example also allows a hold on the portion of cashier’s-check deposits above $5,525 when daily totals exceed that threshold, and a bank may hold the full amount if it has reasonable cause to believe the check is uncollectible. These are funds-availability rules, not authenticity tests; ask your bank about current rules and your specific deposit. OCC guidance on cashier’s-check holds.

What to do if you receive or deposited a suspicious check

If you have not deposited it

  • Do not send an overpayment back, wire money to a third party, or hand over goods based on the check.
  • Contact the bank named as issuer using contact information you find independently on its official website or obtain from a branch. Do not rely only on a phone number printed on the check.
  • Ask the issuer whether it issued the check and whether it has been paid. Report suspected counterfeit or stolen instruments to the issuing bank. The OCC also provides a counterfeit or stolen instrument reporting route.

If you already deposited it

  • Call your bank’s fraud or deposit department promptly, explain how you received the check, and ask whether the item has been verified with the issuing bank.
  • Do not treat a pending or available credit as confirmation that the check is genuine. Avoid spending the funds or sending money or property until your bank confirms the item’s status.
  • Keep the check, deposit receipt, messages, shipping details, and any other records of the transaction. If the bank reverses the credit, ask it to explain the return and any next steps.

If your own cashier’s check is missing

Notify the issuing bank immediately and ask about its declaration-of-loss, indemnity, waiting-period, and replacement procedures. Keep the purchase receipt, check serial number, and correspondence. The issuer can explain the forms and timing that apply; applicable rights and procedures vary by state and bank.

How to distinguish the key statuses

  • Issued or genuine: The named bank actually created the instrument. Appearance alone cannot establish this.
  • Presented or paid: The check has been presented to and honored by the paying bank.
  • Available: Your bank has made some or all of the deposit accessible under its funds-availability policy. That does not, by itself, prove the check was paid or verified as genuine.
  • Canceled or stopped: A formal process affecting payment. Ordinary stop payment is generally unavailable for a cashier’s check, while loss or theft may invoke a special procedure.

The OCC consumer pages cited here were last reviewed in April 2021; the OCC fraud bulletin is dated January 8, 2007 and its page notes a 2025 revision. The state-law examples identify their own dates and should not be treated as rules for other jurisdictions. This guidance is U.S.-focused and does not establish rules outside the United States.
