Existing investors Scottish Equity Partners and TTP Ventures also participated, while Carbon Trust Investments joined as a new investor. The funding was intended to help the company commercialize power-management chips designed to reduce energy use in electronic equipment.
Who invested in CamSemi?
The contemporary report names 3i as the lead investor, with existing shareholders Scottish Equity Partners (SEP) and TTP Ventures taking part. Carbon Trust Investments joined the round as a new investor and was reported to have made a $4 million equity investment. The report does not specify each investor’s contribution or ownership stake, or explain how the dollar-denominated investment relates to the £13 million total. The report also gives an approximate contemporary conversion of the overall raise as $26 million; that is not a current exchange-rate equivalent.
The available account does not state the company’s valuation, the round’s precise legal terms, whether any debt was included, or the date it legally closed. Those details cannot be inferred from the headline figure.
What CamSemi made
CamSemi, formally Cambridge Semiconductor Ltd., was developing mixed-signal power-management integrated circuits. These chips were intended to reduce the energy electronic equipment uses both while operating and in standby. The report says the company had recently unveiled its first product, a mixed-signal controller IC, but does not identify its model, specifications, intended appliance categories, customers, or production status.
#1 Best Overall
CamSemi was described as a fabless semiconductor company: a company focused on chip design and related development rather than owning its own fabrication plants. In general, that model can avoid the cost of building and operating a fab, while making manufacturing arrangements and supply-chain execution important. The report does not identify CamSemi’s manufacturing partners.
What the funding was meant to pay for
The stated purpose was to move the technology toward commercial use and support growth. The proceeds were intended for:

- Features a bare semiconductor die with visible IC and CMOS structures, providing a visual reference for semiconductor technology and microelectronics.
- Suitable for STEM education, electronics learning, engineering demonstrations and classroom teaching.
- Ideal for technology exhibitions, laboratory displays, science presentations, office displays and semiconductor collections.
- Designed for technology enthusiasts, students, educators and collectors seeking a physical semiconductor display specimen.
- Carefully packaged for display, presentation, storage and long-term collection. Intended for educational and decorative use only.
- Commercializing the company’s energy-saving products.
- Building sales and marketing infrastructure.
- Providing working capital for expansion in response to customer demand.
That spending profile reflects a step beyond chip development: a semiconductor business must also validate products, arrange manufacturing, win customer approval and support sales. The report does not say that CamSemi had achieved profitable operations, entered mass production, or secured particular customer contracts.
Why investors saw potential
Carbon Trust Investments’ Adam Workman said the technology could make a meaningful contribution to reducing energy consumption. That explains the round’s cleantech dimension, but the announcement gives no measured per-device savings, emissions reductions, customer payback figures, or independent environmental results.

Laurence Garrett, a 3i partner and CamSemi board member, cited the company’s patented proprietary technology, product portfolio, management and engineering capabilities, and potential to become a power-management IC market leader. He also characterized CamSemi as one of Europe’s top three emerging fabless semiconductor companies. These were investor assessments reported at the time, not independently verified rankings or evidence that the company later became a market leader.

The £13 million figure establishes the reported size of the Series C round, not the company’s subsequent commercial success. A product unveiling is not the same as volume production, and an intended energy-efficiency benefit is not a measured outcome. The report does not establish product deployment, revenue, market share, or what happened to CamSemi after the financing.

- Due to multiple manufacturers of the same model for some electronic components, the production date may differ from the picture. Some electronic component manufacturers may have different models.
- The main business products include: field-effect transistors, IGBT transistors, Schottky, fast recovery, power transistors, thyristors, and other types of diodes and transistors
The report described the raise as one of the year’s largest for a European fabless semiconductor company, but it provides no supporting market comparison or dependable publication date. Treat that description as the publication’s characterization, not as a verified ranking.
