To look up a company in California’s WARN database, start with the California Employment Development Department (EDD) WARN page. It links the state’s latest report and annual reports, and explains how to request notices. Use the state filing to confirm a company, worksite, worker count, and dates: a WARN notice is advance notice of a planned event, not proof that every listed job loss ultimately occurred.
How do I look up a company on the California WARN database?
- Open the EDD WARN page. Its latest report link points to an XLSX file. EDD also lists annual reports; the 2025–2026 report covers July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026. These are report periods, not a running count of all California layoffs. Check EDD’s WARN page for the currently linked report and guidance.
- Search the report for the company name. In a spreadsheet program, use Find/Search; company names may appear in different forms, so try the employer’s legal name, familiar brand, and relevant subsidiary if needed.
- Check the underlying notice details. Confirm the affected location, number of workers, notice date, and effective date. A company may have multiple sites or notices, and the dates are not interchangeable.
- If you cannot find the notice, request it from EDD. The state page explains how to submit a public-records request for WARN notices. A missing result in a spreadsheet or search tool does not by itself establish that no layoff is planned.
For easier company or county browsing, the independent CaliforniaWarn tracker says its data comes from EDD filings. It is a navigation aid, not the state’s authoritative record. Its summary of coverage criteria differs from EDD’s current guidance, so verify legal rules and individual filings with EDD. Tracker counts and future dates can change; treat them as a snapshot, not an official current total.

What does a California WARN notice mean?
A WARN notice is a written advance notification of a qualifying planned layoff, plant or facility closure, or relocation. EDD says California generally covers employers with 75 or more employees and identifies a layoff of 50 or more employees within a 30-day period as one qualifying event. A covered employer generally must provide written notice at least 60 days in advance to affected employees, EDD, the local workforce development area, and the affected local government’s chief elected official. EDD’s page says, “If you’re planning a mass layoff, plant closure, or relocation in California, you may be required to provide advance notice under the WARN Act.” It also says, “New for 2026: WARN notices must explain how you will support workers who are laid off.” Both statements are from EDD’s WARN guidance, accessed October 8, 2026.

The 60-day rule is general, not absolute. EDD notes exceptions and says employers unable to provide 60 days’ notice should file and explain the circumstances. The California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) provides a statutory Cal-WARN overview; it says an employer that fails to give required notice may be liable to affected employees for back pay and the value of benefits, subject to statutory limits. That general information does not determine whether a particular employer or worker has a legal claim.
Is my company closing in California?
A database entry can show that an employer filed notice of a planned event at a specified site and on specified dates. It cannot, on its own, confirm the company’s final decision, whether the event proceeded as announced, or what happened to an individual employee. Read the notice itself when those details matter, and look for later information from the employer or relevant public agencies.

Not every job cut appears in WARN records. Some layoffs may fall below coverage thresholds, qualify for an exception, involve different timing, or be absent from a particular report or tracker snapshot. A missing company name is therefore not proof that no jobs will be cut. Likewise, a report-period end date, notice date, and effective date describe different things: annual report periods are fixed, while the latest report link and independent tracker listings can change.
What should workers do after finding a notice?
EDD describes Rapid Response support for workers and employers affected by layoffs or closures, including help with career counseling, job searches, and retraining inquiries. Contact a local America’s Job Center of California to ask what services are available in your area and whether you qualify. The specific support offered can vary by location.

If you need to understand your rights in a specific situation, the DIR overview is general legal information, not a personal determination. A notice listing your worksite does not by itself establish an individual entitlement or resolve whether the employer complied with the law.
