A California administrative law judge concluded that Tesla’s use of “Autopilot” and “Full Self-Driving Capability” to describe driver-assistance features was misleading under state law. The California DMV adopted that decision in December 2025 and proposed a 30-day suspension of Tesla’s California vehicle-sales license—but stayed the suspension. In February 2026, the DMV said Tesla had made sufficient marketing changes and did not suspend sales.
What the California case decided
This was a California DMV administrative advertising case, not a customer lawsuit seeking damages. The agency challenged Tesla’s use of “Autopilot” and “Full Self-Driving Capability” for advanced driver-assistance systems. On December 16, 2025, the DMV announced it had adopted the administrative law judge’s proposed decision, which found the naming and descriptions misleading and in violation of state law. The ruling concerned how the features were marketed. It did not determine that every Tesla owner had been individually deceived, award money to customers, or establish that Tesla vehicles were autonomous.
Why proof of an individual customer’s harm was not required
The administrative law judge said the DMV could regulate vehicle advertising without proving that a specific person had actually been deceived or harmed. TechCrunch attributed this sentence to Administrative Law Judge Juliet Cox’s decision: “The DMV’s authority to regulate vehicle advertising does not depend on evidence that any particular advertising actually has deceived or harmed any person.” TechCrunch’s report

Did California suspend Tesla sales?
No. The proposed penalty included a 30-day suspension of Tesla’s license to sell vehicles in California, but the DMV stayed it and gave the company time to make changes. After a 90-day compliance period, California regulators decided in February 2026 not to suspend the license, saying Tesla had made sufficient changes. The Associated Press reported that Tesla added “supervised” to Full Self-Driving and stopped using Autopilot in its California marketing. Associated Press report
That outcome is the DMV’s determination about Tesla’s compliance in this California matter. It does not establish that every marketing issue in every state or legal proceeding has been resolved.

How this differs from the federal class action and Florida crash case
Several Tesla-related proceedings concern driver assistance or vehicle safety, but they involve different decision-makers, legal questions, and outcomes.

What the federal order does—and does not—say about Tesla packages
The federal class-certification order describes historical optional driver-assistance packages and hardware-related statements in the court record. It gives a historical package-price range of $3,000 to $15,000; those figures are not current Tesla pricing. The order’s descriptions of Enhanced Autopilot, Full Self-Driving, and hardware generations should likewise be read as historical context in that case, not as a current product specification or price list. Tesla’s June 2026 Form 10-Q also reported a proposed consumer class action filed June 4, 2026, concerning alleged statements about driver-assistance capabilities. The California decision is about the accuracy of advertising names and descriptions, not an individual owner’s eligibility for compensation. The materials described here do not establish a population-level count of customers who were deceived, and the DMV decision itself did not award customer damages. A person considering an individual claim would need to assess the relevant facts and law separately; the administrative finding alone does not decide that person’s case.

For evaluating driver assistance, the practical distinction is between a feature’s marketing name and what it actually does. The proceedings described here concern systems that assist a driver; the California ruling should not be read as a finding that a Tesla can drive itself without supervision.
