Café Coffee Day’s 2015 IPO: What Investors Needed to Know

Café Coffee Day’s parent company, Coffee Day Enterprises, raised ₹11.5 billion in its 2015 IPO. The issue is historical; here’s what the offer and market debut involved, plus the care needed when reading later disclosures.

The coffee chain was Café Coffee Day (CCD), operated by Coffee Day Enterprises Limited (CDEL), the company that issued the shares. Its IPO opened on October 14, 2015, and is a completed historical offering—not an investment available to subscribe to today.

Which coffee chain launched the IPO?

Café Coffee Day was the café business; Coffee Day Enterprises Limited was the corporate issuer named in the offering and in the Securities and Exchange Board of India’s public-issues archive. The distinction matters: investors in the IPO bought shares in CDEL, not a direct stake in an individual café.

At the time, Reuters reported that CCD had opened its first café in Bengaluru in 1996 and operated more than 1,500 outlets in India and 14 overseas. Those are 2015 figures, not a current store count. (Reuters via Business Standard, October 6, 2015.)

What were the IPO terms?

The planned issue opened October 14 and was scheduled to close October 16, 2015. Reuters reported an indicative price band of ₹316 to ₹328 per share and an intended raise of up to US$176 million. CDEL ultimately raised ₹11.5 billion, approximately US$175.75 million, according to Reuters’ listing-day report. Trading was expected to begin November 2.

How did the shares perform when they listed?

On November 2, 2015, CDEL shares opened below the ₹328 offer price and fell as much as 15.5% on debut, Reuters reported. The contemporaneous coverage cited concerns among investors about valuation, the complexity of the corporate group and whether IPO proceeds would address debt. These were reported explanations for the weak debut, not a complete account of the company’s later financial or legal history. (Reuters via Business Standard, November 2, 2015.)

What does the IPO-era market context tell you?

Reuters relayed a Technopak estimate that India’s café market was worth ₹18 billion (US$279 million) in 2014 and was growing at an estimated 20% annually. This was an estimate from the period, reported in 2015—not a current market-size figure. It helps explain the growth narrative surrounding the IPO, but it should not be read as evidence of current market conditions or CCD’s present position.

What is known about Coffee Day Enterprises now?

More recent disclosures make it especially important to keep the IPO story separate from present-day investment analysis. CDEL’s nine-month financial results for the period ended December 31, 2025, published February 12, 2026, reported group borrowings of approximately ₹839 crore. The filing also discussed defaults, covenant breaches, settlements and appeals; it recorded that the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal allowed CDEL’s appeal on February 27, 2025. The filing does not establish that every group or subsidiary debt and legal matter has been resolved. Read the company’s results filing.

Separately, SEBI published a March 2, 2026 adjudication order titled “Adjudication Order in the matter of financial mis-statements of Coffee Day Enterprises Limited.” The existence and subject of the order are established by the regulator’s publication; its title alone does not establish the findings, parties’ positions or penalty outcome. See SEBI’s order page for the order itself.

What a personal-finance reader should take away

  • The headline describes a 2015 event, not an IPO that is currently open.
  • The listed issuer was Coffee Day Enterprises Limited, the parent associated with Café Coffee Day; the café chain and the security offered are not interchangeable.
  • Historical offer terms and store counts explain the original listing but do not establish today’s valuation, operating footprint or investment merits.
  • For any present-day assessment, use current company disclosures and the full regulator order rather than inferring a complete outcome from a headline or a single filing.
