Tokyo gives watch buyers several credible places to start, including a documented secondhand specialist in Ginza and specialist retailers in Nakano. But no neighborhood guarantees a bargain, and a shop’s location or paperwork alone cannot establish a particular watch’s authenticity or condition. Compare the exact watch, its written terms, and the tax rules that apply on your purchase date.
Where to shop for used and vintage watches in Tokyo
Ginza
The official Ginza directory lists GINZA RASIN at 8-7-11 Ginza, Chuo City, Tokyo, describing it as a watch specialist selling secondhand watches and rare antiques. The directory lists hours as Monday–Saturday, 11:00–19:30, and Sunday and public holidays, 11:00–19:00. It warns that shop information can change, so confirm hours and ask about the specific watch before making a special trip.
GINZA FOUR VINTAGE announced in February 2026 that it had started tax-free service for eligible non-resident visitors, including for watches among its luxury goods. That announcement does not confirm current stock of a particular model or guarantee the process available on a later purchase date. Contact the shop and check the Japan Tourism Agency’s current tax-free guidance.
Nakano
Nakano City’s tourism information features watch specialists Jackroad and Bettyroad and describes services for international shoppers. Treat this as a useful starting point, not a promise about present stock, pricing, warranties, or other policies. A commercial guide also describes independent used and vintage watch dealers on upper floors of Nakano Broadway; verify each seller and its current listing directly before relying on that guide’s area-wide claims.

Ginza has a directly documented secondhand specialist and vintage-luxury retail leads; Nakano is a documented specialist-watch destination with additional dealer leads. The available information does not establish that either district is consistently cheaper or better for every brand. Compare the same reference and condition, then account for documentation, after-sale support, payment and currency costs, return terms, and tax treatment.
How to evaluate a specific watch
Use the same checks for each candidate rather than judging by the neighborhood or asking price alone. The Ginza directory confirms secondhand and antique inventory, but it does not describe a universal authentication protocol for all sellers or watches.

- Match the identification. Confirm the brand, reference, serial information, and that the seller’s description agrees with the watch and any accompanying papers.
- Ask about condition and originality. Inspect the case, dial, hands, bracelet, clasp, and crown. Ask what parts have been replaced, whether the case has been refinished or polished, and what repairs were made. Age or appearance by itself does not prove originality.
- Establish service status. Ask for the date and scope of the most recent service and request records. If a mechanical watch has no service history, account for possible maintenance rather than assuming it has been serviced.
- Check what is included. Confirm whether the sale includes box, papers, extra links, receipts, or service documents. Their presence does not, by itself, prove authenticity or condition.
- Get after-sale terms in writing. Ask for the condition description, warranty length and coverage, exclusions, return or exchange policy, and who performs warranty work.
- Keep an itemized receipt. It should identify the seller, watch or reference, amount, and tax-free procedure if relevant. Keep it accessible with the watch for any required departure inspection.
How Japan’s tax-free rules affect the purchase
The process depends on the purchase date. The Japan Tourism Agency’s guidance describes a scheduled system change on November 1, 2026; check its current guidance and the participating shop’s procedure close to the transaction date.
Purchases through October 31, 2026
Under the existing system, eligible visitors can receive an exemption from consumption tax at the time of purchase at participating tax-free shops. For general goods, the agency’s guidance sets a minimum purchase of ¥5,000 excluding tax at the same store on the same day. The goods must be taken out of Japan, and the traveler must meet eligibility and documentation requirements; confirm these with the shop and the agency before buying.

Since April 1, 2025, sending tax-free goods home yourself by international parcel no longer establishes eligibility for tax-free shopping. Goods may need to be presented to customs if requested.
Purchases from November 1, 2026
The agency says the scheduled method changes to a refund after departure customs inspection: the visitor pays the tax-inclusive price in the store, then receives the consumption-tax equivalent after customs confirms export. The goods must be available for inspection before baggage check-in. Allow time before boarding, and ask whether the shop or a refund-service provider handles the refund and when it will be paid.

Because this transition is close to the date of this guidance, verify that the scheduled change has been implemented as described before purchasing. Do not assume that purchases on or after November 1, 2026 receive an immediate tax reduction at checkout.

Japan Customs’ guidance about registering a foreign-made watch before departure concerns a watch you already own and are using—not a new watch bought in Tokyo. If you are taking an existing foreign-made watch out of Japan, Japan Customs advises registering it before departure and keeping the confirmation for your return to Japan. The agency warns: “Without the prior confirmation, these goods cannot be distinguished from articles purchased abroad when you return to Japan and they may be dutiable in some cases.”

That advice does not determine the import duty, tax, declaration, or allowance for a newly purchased watch when you arrive in your home country. Those rules depend on your destination; check that country’s customs authority before travel and declare the purchase as required.
