Buying Insurance Is Easy. Knowing What You Bought Is Harder

Your declarations page is only a summary. Learn how to check the full policy, understand limits and deductibles, review endorsements, and get help with unclear terms.

Your declarations page is a useful starting point, but it is not the whole insurance contract. To understand what you bought, read it alongside the full policy form, definitions, exclusions, conditions, and every endorsement or rider. This guide uses U.S. homeowners, renters, and auto policies as examples; terms and state rules vary, and these examples do not automatically apply to health, life, travel, or commercial insurance.

What documents make up your insurance policy?

Keep the declarations or information page with the base policy form and all endorsements or riders. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) describes a homeowners policy as consisting of the declarations page, endorsements, and policy form in its homeowners insurance shopping tool.

The declarations page summarizes important details, such as who is insured, what property or vehicles are covered, the policy period, and selected coverage limits. The full form supplies the contract language behind that summary. Endorsements can add coverage, remove it, or modify the base form, and may affect the premium. A summary or sales description cannot establish the full scope of coverage on its own.

How do you read your declarations page?

Start by checking that the listed information matches what you intended to insure. The NAIC’s guidance on auto insurance and homeowners insurance describes key policy details to review.

  • People and insured property: Check the named insureds, address, and covered home, belongings, or vehicles.
  • Policy identification and dates: Verify the policy number and effective and expiration dates.
  • Mortgage holder or lienholder: Confirm that any listed party and its details are correct.
  • Coverage and limits: Identify each coverage and its limit. A limit is the maximum payable under that coverage, subject to the contract’s other terms.
  • Deductible: Find the amount and the coverage or loss it applies to. A deductible is the portion of a claim the policyholder is responsible for under the applicable terms. Do not assume one deductible applies to every coverage or type of loss.

How can you tell what the policy actually covers?

Read the insuring agreement—the section that describes the insurer’s promise—together with the policy’s definitions and exclusions. A broad description of coverage may be narrowed by a definition or an exclusion elsewhere in the contract. The NAIC’s homeowners insurance guidance notes that flood and earthquake are typically excluded from homeowners and renters policies, but the exact language depends on the policy. Check your own form rather than assuming a general description answers whether a particular loss is covered.

Then review the conditions, which set out responsibilities under the contract. For homeowners and renters policies, these can include what the insured is expected to do after a loss. Follow the wording in your policy and ask the insurer or agent to clarify anything you do not understand.

What do endorsements and riders change?

Compare every endorsement or rider listed with the base form. An endorsement may broaden coverage, take something away, or change how an existing provision works. The NAIC explains these changes in its insurance glossary. Do not assume a listed endorsement is merely extra protection: read the actual language and note which base-policy provision it changes.

How should you compare two policies?

Compare policies for the same insured people, property, and risks. The NAIC’s homeowners insurance shopping tool highlights factors such as limits, policy period, deductible, premium, discounts, and additional coverage; policy forms can also differ.

Compare What to check
Coverage scope and definitions Which risks and property are covered, and how important terms are defined.
Exclusions and endorsements What is excluded and what each endorsement adds, removes, or changes.
Limits and sublimits The maximum payable for each coverage and any lower limit for a particular item or type of loss.
Deductibles The amount and the coverage or loss to which each deductible applies.
Policy term and renewal conditions The dates of coverage and the contract’s applicable renewal terms.
Premium The cost for the policy being compared, considered alongside its coverage and terms.

A lower premium alone does not show that two policies provide equivalent protection. The NAIC notes that policy forms may differ and that coverage descriptions can vary by state, particularly for auto insurance, in its auto insurance guidance and homeowners insurance guidance.

What should you do when a term is unclear?

  1. Gather the declarations page, base policy form, and every endorsement or rider.
  2. Locate the provision in question, then read its definitions, exclusions, and related conditions rather than relying on the declarations page alone.
  3. Ask your agent or insurer to explain the wording. If possible, request the explanation in writing and keep it with your policy documents.
  4. If you still need help understanding terms or coverage options, contact your state insurance department. The NAIC provides a directory of state insurance departments.

The NAIC puts the basic advice plainly: “Read the policy and ask your agent about anything you don’t understand.” A policy review helps you understand the contract; it does not decide whether a specific loss will be covered. That depends on the full policy, the facts, applicable endorsements and exclusions, and state law.
