Buying Direct from Chinese Marketplaces: A Buyer’s Checklist

A practical checklist for evaluating sellers, checkout costs, returns, payment protections, and product rules before buying direct from a China-based marketplace.

Before buying direct from a seller on a China-based marketplace, check who the seller is, what the order will cost at checkout, how returns and refunds work, and which payment and dispute protections apply. There is no single policy or legal regime for every marketplace or destination, so verify the terms for your exact listing and keep records in case the order goes wrong.

What to check before you place an order

Use this checklist for the specific listing, seller, and destination. A marketplace may facilitate a transaction without guaranteeing every seller’s delivery, refund, or dispute outcome. The Federal Trade Commission advises shoppers to review seller terms, shipping fees, return policies, and the available help and payment options before buying: FTC: Buying From an Online Marketplace.

  1. Identify the seller. Check the seller’s name, location, contact details, and whether the seller is identified as a business or an individual. Those details can affect which consumer rules apply and how practical it may be to pursue a complaint.
  2. Assess the listing. Read the full description and specifications, and compare them with the photos. For expensive goods, an unusually low price is a reason to investigate authenticity and seller history rather than assume the offer is genuine.
  3. Work out the checkout cost. Record the item price, shipping and delivery charges, and any taxes or import charges explicitly shown. Check whether return postage could be an additional cost. Charges and customs processes depend on the destination and order; there is no universal calculation for an unspecified country.
  4. Check delivery details. Note the estimated delivery window shown for your order, whether tracking is included, and what the seller or marketplace says to do if the parcel is late or never arrives.
  5. Read the return and refund terms. Find the return window, refund conditions, return address, who pays postage, and the marketplace’s role if you and the seller disagree. Save the applicable policy terms before paying.
  6. Use a traceable payment route. Pay through the marketplace’s supported checkout or another safer method with applicable dispute protections. Do not accept a request to move payment to a bank transfer or other off-platform channel: doing so may remove protections offered by the site.

Compare the offer with local-stock alternatives

A direct-from-abroad offer is not automatically the cheapest or best-value option. Compare the actual terms for each offer rather than relying on a headline price.

What to compare Questions to answer
Total cost What is the checkout total, including displayed shipping and destination charges? Could return postage add a cost?
Delivery What delivery estimate and tracking does this order show, and what happens if it is late?
Seller Who is selling the item, where are they based, and are they a business or private individual?
Returns Where must the item be sent, who pays return shipping, and what conditions or deadlines apply?
Refunds and disputes How do you open a claim, what evidence is needed, and what deadlines apply to the marketplace and payment provider?
Product compliance For the product and destination, what safety or regulatory requirements apply, and is there credible evidence the item meets them?

Keep evidence and act promptly if something goes wrong

Save records while the listing and checkout terms are still accessible. Keep screenshots or copies of the offer, seller information, checkout total, estimated delivery, order confirmation, tracking history, and messages with the seller. If there is a problem, contact the seller in writing and follow the marketplace’s claim process and deadlines. If you paid by a method with a separate dispute process, check its deadline too; the marketplace and payment provider may have different rules.

Your rights depend on where you live and who sold the item

Consumer rights are not interchangeable across countries. In the EU, consumer rules may apply to a non-EU trader that targets EU consumers, but the European Commission warns that asserting rights can be difficult when a trader is outside the EU. Whether the seller is a professional trader or a private individual can also matter. See the Commission’s guidance on consumer rights when shopping. Do not treat this EU guidance as a statement of your rights in other countries.

For taxes, duties, customs processing charges, and legal remedies, check current official guidance for your own destination and the terms that apply to the order. The available information here does not establish a universal import-charge schedule or resolve every buyer’s legal position.

Check product safety for your destination

Online imports still need to meet the rules of the market where they are sold. The European Commission states: “All products sold in the EU – online or in a physical shop – must comply with product safety rules.” That general rule does not confirm that a particular listing complies. For safety-sensitive or regulated goods, check the applicable destination requirements and recall information for that product type. EU buyers can start with the Commission’s product safety information.

Marketplace policies can change—and enforcement claims need context

Read the current terms for your particular transaction; do not assume a platform-wide guarantee or that one seller’s terms describe every listing. In May 2025, the European Commission reported that the Consumer Protection Cooperation Network had notified SHEIN of practices it assessed as infringing EU consumer law, including missing, incorrect, or misleading information about return and refund rights. This was a notification and assessment, not a court judgment or proof about every seller or marketplace. The Commission’s account is available on its SHEIN consumer-protection update.

Do not confuse China’s inbound-import rules with your purchase

Chinese guidance sometimes cited in discussions of cross-border shopping concerns consumers in China buying goods from abroad through specified cross-border e-commerce import channels. It discusses issues such as differences between origin-country requirements and Chinese standards; it does not establish the rules for a shopper importing goods into the US, EU, UK, or another destination. For your order, use the rules and official customs guidance for the country where you will receive the item.
