In August 2024, Tech.eu described the US as buycycle’s fastest-growing market and reported more than 2,000 US bikes among over 20,000 listings overall. Those are historical company figures, not a current inventory count or proof of market-wide change.
What buycycle’s first US year looked like
Founded in Munich in 2021, buycycle expanded into the US about a year before Tech.eu’s August 27, 2024 report. The company’s marketplace focused on mid- and high-end sports bikes, including road, gravel, triathlon and mountain bikes. Tech.eu reported that buycycle had attracted more than 1 million monthly US visits since the expansion and named California, New York and Texas as strong growth regions. The figures and regional description were reported in 2024; they should not be read as current activity levels.
Founder Theodor Golditchuk described the demand this way: “Our customers in the US needed a platform to buy and sell pre-owned bikes securely and conveniently.” That is the founder’s explanation of the opportunity, not independent evidence that existing alternatives were inadequate.
What the growth figures do—and don’t—show
The reported listing count and traffic suggest buycycle established a visible US presence in its first year. They do not show what share of the American second-hand bike market it captured, whether overall used-bike sales changed, or how competitors performed. The reviewed reporting does not provide independent market-wide data to support the claim that buycycle “redefined” the industry.

Tech.eu also reported buycycle’s claim that some bikes could be priced up to 70 per cent below retail. “Up to” describes a possible maximum, not the typical saving, a verified average, or a guaranteed discount. A buyer needs to compare the particular bike’s condition and specifications, plus shipping and any applicable fees, with the cost of an equivalent alternative.
How the US marketplace and buyer protection work
Buyers and sellers make the purchase contract
Under buycycle’s US Terms and Conditions, the platform acts as an intermediary: buyer and seller contract directly, and buycycle says it does not take ownership of listed items. The terms also say the company does not investigate or verify users’ reputation, conduct, criminal background or submitted information, and does not guarantee listing accuracy or an item’s condition, authenticity or functionality. A marketplace listing is therefore not, by itself, proof that a seller or bike has been independently vetted.

Buyer Protection is a defined claims service
Buycycle describes Buyer Protection as a paid platform service, not insurance. Its terms identify specified problems that may be covered, including undisclosed cosmetic or mechanical defects and receiving the wrong item. Buyers are instructed to accept delivery, inspect and test the bike reasonably, then file a claim through the order chat within 48 hours of delivery notice. In-person pickup is excluded. Minor wear consistent with the bike’s age and stated condition is not automatically a valid claim. This is a time-limited process for covered issues, not a blanket return policy.
Shipping depends on following the platform’s rules
The US terms require sellers to use prescribed packaging and document the process with photos. Compensation for transit damage depends on compliance with packaging standards and evidence that the damage was not already present. For certain oversized or overweight shipments, the terms allow surcharges of up to $1,875; that is a possible term-based charge, not a typical shipping cost. Buyers should check the order’s total cost and sellers should review the applicable packaging requirements before shipping.

What buycycle says its listings offer
In its own comparison article, buycycle says listings include detailed bike specifications and information about wear, and describes inspection options and a one-year warranty for inspected bikes. These are company-published descriptions of its offer, not independent assessments. The warranty is associated with inspected bikes; it should not be assumed to come with every peer-to-peer listing. Read the individual listing and the terms attached to any inspection or warranty before relying on them.
How to compare a buycycle listing with other options
For the question, “Facebook marketplace vs buycycle for buying or selling a bike?”, buycycle itself has published a comparison article. Regardless of platform, assess the specific transaction rather than assuming that one marketplace guarantees a better bike or lower total cost.

- Specifications and wear: Compare the frame, components and disclosed condition with what you need. Ask for clarification where listing details leave material questions unanswered.
- Total cost: Compare the asking price with shipping and any required fees, rather than relying on a headline discount from retail.
- Transaction method: Check whether the purchase method retains Buyer Protection. The US terms exclude in-person pickup from that service.
- Inspection and warranty: Establish whether the particular bike has been inspected and whether the stated one-year warranty applies to it.
What is—and is not—established about the industry impact
A September 19, 2024 TechBullion article used the headline “One year of innovation: how buycycle redefined the US pre-owned bike industry.” It also made claims about seller verification, financing, successful sales and environmental benefits. The reviewed evidence does not independently substantiate those assertions, so they should not be treated as verified performance or impact figures.
In particular, no independent statistic in the reviewed material quantifies emissions avoided, waste prevented or other environmental benefits attributable to buying a pre-owned bicycle through buycycle. Buying used may extend a product’s useful life, but the available evidence does not establish a measured environmental impact for this marketplace.

The defensible account is narrower: buycycle reported substantial early US traffic and listings in 2024, and it offers a marketplace with specific transaction terms and a paid claims service. Whether that amounted to industry-wide change is not demonstrated by the available data.
