Foreign entrepreneurs visiting India for qualifying commercial purposes generally need a business visa. Eligible applicants may be able to use the online e-Business Visa; others apply through the regular visa process via the responsible Indian Mission or Post. The route, permitted stay, validity and document requirements depend on nationality and application location, so check the current official instructions for your circumstances before applying or booking travel.
How do I get a business visa for India?
First determine whether you qualify for the e-Business Visa or need to apply for a regular business visa. The e-Visa is an online route available only to eligible passport holders and for permitted purposes. Regular applications go through the responsible Indian Mission or Post and its designated application process. The official e-Visa portal and the India Visa Online portal are the starting points; follow the instructions that apply to your nationality and where you apply.
- Confirm the right category and route. Check that your intended activities qualify as business travel and that your nationality and travel document are eligible for the e-Business category. Some document holders, including official or diplomatic passport holders, must use the regular route. The official e-Visa FAQ explains the business purpose and eligibility limits.
- Check the live requirements for your application. For an e-Visa, use the official portal’s current application instructions. For a regular visa, use the responsible mission’s and any designated visa application centre’s current checklist. Fees, appointments, processing times and local document requirements are not uniform in the general provisions.
- Submit accurate information and supporting documents. The e-Visa process is online and includes payment and receipt of an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). The portal instructs applicants to present the ETA at an immigration checkpoint and makes the applicant responsible for the accuracy of submitted information.
- Review the issued visa before travel. Check the validity, entries, permitted stay and any conditions on the visa or ETA. General category descriptions do not guarantee the terms granted to an individual applicant.
Can I apply for an India business e-Visa?
You can apply only if your nationality or territory, travel document and proposed activity meet the e-Visa portal’s current eligibility rules. The portal lists e-Business Visa categories B1 and B6. It also says eligible applicants may apply at least four days before their arrival date; treat that as the stated minimum lead time, not a guarantee of approval or a recommended buffer for travel planning.
The portal’s listed initial uploads include a scanned passport bio page and a business card. An invitation letter from the Indian party may be included if applicable. Uploaded materials, including business cards and invitation letters, must be in English; the portal warns that documents in another language may risk rejection. Check the live instructions for file specifications and any additional requirements before submitting.

How long can I stay in India on a business visa?
Visa validity and permitted stay are different. The Government of India e-Visa portal lists the e-Business B1 visa as valid for one year (365 days) from the grant of the ETA, with multiple entries. It lists e-Business B6 as one year and multiple entry as well. For the e-Business route, continuous stay is generally limited to 180 days per visit. If you intend to remain beyond 180 days, the portal says you must register with the concerned FRRO/FRO within two weeks after that 180-day period expires. The general India Visa Online visa-provision table lists a regular business visa as five years and multiple entry. That is a general category provision, not an entitlement to a five-year visa, and it does not settle the stay conditions for every nationality. The Ministry of Home Affairs’ business-visa policy annex describes different validity and conditions for certain nationality groups, including a ten-year multiple-entry provision for specified nationalities subject to a 180-day continuous-stay condition. Because that annex was published in 2018 and rules can depend on bilateral arrangements or later mission guidance, verify the current rule with the relevant Indian mission rather than relying on an older nationality list.

What documents do I need for an Indian business visa?
For an e-Business Visa
- Scanned passport bio page.
- Business card.
- Invitation letter from the Indian party, if applicable.
- Documents in English, as required by the portal.
The official e-Visa portal may specify additional current requirements, formats or information during the application. Check those instructions rather than assuming the initial upload list is exhaustive.
For a regular business visa
The general visa provisions call for evidence that establishes a bona fide business purpose, such as a company letter. The responsible Indian Mission or Post’s current checklist governs the application; it may ask for further supporting material. The MHA policy says applicants should have assured financial standing and that their financial standing and expertise in the intended business may be scrutinized.

Can I work in India on a business visa?
A business visa is not general permission to take a job in India. The Ministry of Home Affairs’ policy says the visitor should not be coming for full-time employment, money lending, or running a petty business or petty trade, and also refers to compliance with applicable tax liabilities. If your purpose is to work for an Indian company or otherwise perform employment, check the appropriate visa category with the responsible Indian Mission or Post before travelling.

What should foreign entrepreneurs verify before applying?
- Nationality and application location: e-Visa availability, visa conditions and local procedures can differ.
- Business purpose: Make sure the planned activities fit the category; a business label does not make employment or excluded activities permissible.
- Stay and validity: Check the terms actually granted and distinguish the visa’s validity period from the allowed continuous stay.
- Documents and language: Follow the current checklist for the route, including English-language requirements for e-Visa uploads.
- Travel timing: The e-Visa portal’s four-day minimum application lead time is not an assurance that an application will be processed or approved by a chosen date.
