Who was Jeff Weber?
PerthNow’s October 4, 2011, interview identified Weber as chief executive of Mermaid Marine Australia, a marine services provider to the oil and gas industry. He described a career that began at sea and progressed through ship management and operational leadership.
From seafarer to CEO
According to the interview, Weber started as a BHP cadet and worked at sea until about age 32. He later completed a master’s degree in Engineering and Technology Management at the University of Queensland, became a ship manager in Melbourne, moved back to Queensland for family reasons, and joined Riverside Marine. He took the chief operating officer role at Mermaid Marine in April 2002 and became CEO about six months later.
Why did Weber see people as Mermaid Marine’s advantage?
Weber argued that skilled people could give a company an edge that buying assets alone could not. “Unequivocally. That’s the competition. If you can get better people than your competition, you win,” he told PerthNow.

He connected that advantage to offshore operations: masters, chief engineers and crews had to make consequential decisions far from shore. In his account, their judgment and capability were central to the business, not simply an addition to its vessels and equipment.
What workforce pressures did he anticipate?
Weber called labor availability an ongoing issue in 2011. He expected competition for marine workers to intensify as major oil and gas projects, including Gorgon and Wheatstone, progressed. He said Mermaid Marine was beginning to recruit in the UK and discussing recruitment from New Zealand. Those comments record the company’s expectations and recruitment discussions at the time; they do not establish present-day labor conditions or hiring plans.

Where did he expect Mermaid Marine to grow?
Weber said Australia offered enough activity for the company for the next five years, while Mermaid Marine also wanted to build international capability, probably with a focus on Southeast Asia. He cited the company’s Singapore office and told PerthNow that the Singapore company held $100 million in assets. That is a figure reported in the 2011 interview, not a current valuation.
For near-term business priorities, he mentioned bids and opportunities associated with Wheatstone, Prelude and Broome, as well as hiring in Singapore. He said the company was better off pursuing project work and organic growth than making major acquisitions at that stage. These were plans and judgments expressed in 2011.

What was Weber’s view of industrial relations?
Discussing industrial action at Dampier Supply Base, Weber described the situation as difficult and compared it with earlier enterprise bargaining agreements. Asked whether unions had too much power, he argued for balance: employees should be treated properly, while businesses also needed productivity and workable processes.
That answer reflects Weber’s position in the context of a particular 2011 dispute. The interview is not an independent account of what happened at the supply base or a general assessment of unions and industrial relations.

What did he say about Australian gas and infrastructure?
Weber said he believed Australia should make greater use of its gas industry. He also discussed self-sufficiency, imports and the idea of a national grid. These were his policy views in the 2011 interview, rather than an analysis of later energy policy or infrastructure developments.
What personal detail did the interview include?
Asked about life outside work, Weber mentioned taking his daughter to Nippers at North Cottesloe. It was a brief personal note alongside a conversation otherwise focused on the company and its industry.
