A short-term cash-flow gap may suit an overdraft, revolving line, invoice finance, or trade finance; an asset or growth investment usually calls for a term loan, asset finance, or a lease. The labels overlap: a business loan can fund working capital, and a working-capital facility can itself be structured as a term loan.
Business loan vs. working-capital finance: what is the difference?
“Business loan” is a broad label for borrowing used by a business. “Working-capital finance” describes borrowing for operating needs, such as paying suppliers, wages, or other expenses while waiting for customer receipts. It is not one universal product: working capital may be funded through a term loan, overdraft, revolving credit, invoice finance, or trade finance.
So the decision is less about choosing between two mutually exclusive categories and more about matching the facility’s structure to the cash need. The Australian Government’s business.gov.au guide to business loans describes options including standard loans, revolving lines, overdrafts, invoice finance, hire purchase, and trade finance.
Which type of borrowing fits your need?
| Business need | Facilities to examine | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Short, temporary cash-flow gap | Overdraft, short-term loan, revolving credit | Available limit, fees, variable-rate exposure, review and renewal terms, and whether repayment can be demanded on short notice. |
| Seasonal cash-flow mismatch | Revolving facility; inventory or stocking finance where appropriate | Whether drawdowns and repayments match the sales cycle, and whether the limit remains available through the season. |
| Cash tied up in unpaid invoices | Invoice discounting or factoring | Advance and retention mechanics, fees, recourse, and whether the lender or factor deals directly with customers. |
| Supplier payment is due before customer payment arrives | Trade finance | Whether the facility is linked to the transaction and expected customer payment, especially for import or export activity. |
| Working-capital shortfall persists for months | Working-capital term loan or another structured facility | Model the repayment source and investigate collections, supplier terms, margins, and whether the underlying cash deficit is being addressed. |
| Equipment, vehicle, premises, or expansion investment | Term or investment loan, asset finance, hire purchase, or lease | Repayment timing against the investment’s expected returns, ownership, collateral, end-of-term terms, and total cost. |
Match the facility to the cash-flow cause
Temporary or seasonal gaps
An overdraft or revolving line can allow repeated borrowing up to an approved limit, which can help when cash needs fluctuate or follow a predictable seasonal pattern. Interest is generally charged on the amount drawn, but fees, rate structure, limit reviews, and repayment rights vary by lender and contract. Do not assume a facility will remain available indefinitely.

In the UK, HM Revenue & Customs’ Corporate Finance Manual guidance on short-term borrowing says overdrafts are repayable on demand, are commonly reviewed for renewal, and often have variable interest and arrangement fees. These are UK manual details, not terms that apply automatically to every overdraft elsewhere; check the agreement. The Australian Government cautions that an overdraft can bridge short-term cash-flow gaps but should not be relied on for capital purchases or long-term financing.
Unpaid invoices
Invoice finance turns receivables into a source of cash before customers pay. With invoice discounting, the business generally borrows against invoices and remains responsible for collecting them. With factoring, a factor generally purchases or advances against invoices and may take on collection. Exact legal and commercial mechanics vary by jurisdiction and contract, so compare fees, the amount advanced or retained, recourse if a customer does not pay, and the effect on customer relationships.

Supplier and customer payment timing
Trade finance can bridge the interval between paying a supplier and receiving money from a customer, particularly where a transaction involves importing or exporting. The useful test is whether the borrowing is tied to a specific trade transaction and whether the expected customer receipt can repay it.
Persistent operating shortfall
A working-capital loan may suit a need that lasts longer than a brief timing gap, but repeated short-term borrowing can leave a business refinancing the same shortfall without solving its cause. Forecast cash flow and examine collections, supplier payment terms, margins, and operating costs before taking on debt. Borrowing does not by itself make an unprofitable operation sustainable.

Investment with returns over time
Equipment, vehicles, premises, and expansion projects may take time to produce revenue. A term or asset loan, hire purchase, or lease may provide a repayment schedule that better matches that payback period than short-term credit. Compare who owns the asset, what security is required, the end-of-term conditions, and total cost.
How to compare offers fairly
Do not compare headline interest rates alone. The World Bank’s SME financing guide highlights terms such as maturity, rate structure, repayment schedule, currency, collateral, fees, and guarantees. Compare each offer against the business’s cash-flow forecast and the date and source of repayment.

Could a government-backed scheme apply?
Eligibility and support depend on where the business operates and on the scheme’s current rules. For example, as reviewed on 7 October 2026, Enterprise Singapore’s Enterprise Financing Scheme – SME Working Capital Loan page states a maximum of S$500,000 per borrower and a maximum repayment period of five years. Its stated risk share is 50% generally, 70% for young enterprises, and 70% for all enterprises from 1 September 2026 through 31 March 2027. The page also sets scheme-specific Singapore registration, local-equity, sales-turnover, and SME criteria; these are not general eligibility rules for SMEs elsewhere.
A risk share is not debt forgiveness: the same page says the borrower remains responsible for repaying 100% of the loan, and approval is subject to the participating financial institution’s assessment. Confirm the current criteria and terms with the scheme and lender before applying.

A practical decision sequence
- Forecast the gap: Map expected cash inflows and outflows, identify when the shortfall begins and ends, and calculate the amount needed.
- Identify the cause: Separate timing issues, seasonal stock requirements, unpaid invoices, and a lasting operating deficit from investment in an asset or expansion.
- Name the repayment source: Specify which customer receipts, seasonal sales, or investment returns will repay the borrowing, and when they are expected.
- Choose a matching structure: Compare flexible facilities for variable timing needs, invoice or trade facilities for transaction-linked gaps, and term or asset finance for investments with longer payback periods.
- Compare contracts: Use the checklist above to assess total cost, repayment fit, security, guarantees, renewal, and lender rights—not just the advertised rate.
- Check local rules: Verify eligibility and any government scheme terms for the business’s jurisdiction and the date of application.
