The 31st Busan International Film Festival opened in South Korea on October 6, 2026, with actress Kim Min-ha hosting, Michelle Yeoh honored as Asian Filmmaker of the Year, and Kim Jong-kwan’s The Table: Day and Night as the opening film. Running through October 15, BIFF pairs that high-profile launch with a competition it says should showcase the leading edge of Asian cinema.
What is happening at BIFF?
The festival’s official overview lists 247 official-selection films from 59 countries, alongside 69 Community BIFF titles. BIFF’s opening-day release describes the overall program as 316 films, but its overview also gives a different official-selection count elsewhere. Because the published breakdowns do not fully align, the safest summary is that BIFF is presenting a program of more than 300 films across its official and community sections, with the exact section totals varying by page.
The festival runs from October 6 through October 15, 2026. Its opening ceremony brought together Korean performers and filmmakers and international guests, including Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón and Chinese actress Fan Bingbing, according to UPI’s October 6 report. BIFF independently confirms Kim Minha as ceremony host and Michelle Yeoh as this year’s Asian Filmmaker of the Year honoree.
What is the opening film?
Kim Jong-kwan’s The Table: Day and Night opened the festival. UPI describes it as an 80-minute romantic drama told through four character-driven vignettes set in the same café. Its reported ensemble includes Kim Min-ha, Joo Jong-hyuk, Han Sun-hwa, Shim Eun-kyung, and Lee Hee-jun.

Why does this edition matter?
BIFF is emphasizing its standing in the festival world
BIFF says the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF) has recognized it as an “A-list festival.” That is the festival’s own description of its institutional standing; it does not by itself establish audience reach, distribution outcomes, or industry impact.
The Busan Award creates an Oscar submission route
BIFF says the winner of its Busan Award for Best Film qualifies for submission to the Academy Award for International Feature Film. Eligibility for submission is a pathway, not an automatic Academy nomination or a win.
The Competition has an artistic aim, but its film count is unsettled
UPI reported that the Competition included 13 films, while BIFF’s current official selection page lists 14. The sources do not reconcile the difference, so a definitive count would be misleading. Festival director Jung Hanseok described the ambition behind the section: “These 13 films should not simply be a collection of titles. Together, they should represent the leading edge of Asian cinema today.”

The star guests and opening-night film give BIFF a visible public launch; the program breadth, FIAPF recognition, and award’s Academy submission eligibility speak to its institutional ambitions. Those are distinct indicators. The available figures do not establish whether the festival’s profile has produced higher attendance, wider international distribution, or increased industry activity.
